went on 1/27/12 at night and a young local employee was working the front during league bowling. He was talking story constantly with another man, and he was cussing up a storm using the F-word repeatedly, and loudly. My friends and I waited and tried to get his attention and when we did he finally said something about open bowling at midnight, but he quickly went back to his conversation and ignored us. Terrible employee. I may never return to this venue just because of the horrendous service.

When Leeward Bowl isnt busy, the employees are great & its so easy to get lanes. But once the weekend rolls around with crowds of teenagers, the employees are just so swamped. Its not worth it for us to wait for an hour and fight others for lanes. Advice: call ahead & put your name on their waiting list.

Although I prefer not to trash the house that I bowl in, there are a few things that management needs to address and fix as soon as possible. A)More emphasis need to be placed on fixing the pin setters and ball return. Nothing more frustrating than waiting for a full rack or your ball to come back, especially if you’re in the process of a good game. B)Management must instruct all parents bringing little children to the alley that they are responsible for their children’s behavior. Kids should not be allowed to run around, block the entry way, throw things around, yell or scream. One day, a kid is going to get hurt and everyone will suffer because you know that parent is going to blame the alley and not their poor parenting skills. C) Proper bowling etiquette should be posted at the front desk. All league bowlers know lane etiquette but not all recreational bowlers do. There’s nothing more frustrating when you’re at the approach than having the person next to you zoom past you to throw their ball, or having the person or people sharing the same pit spill drinks or food and not bother to wipe it up. Just because we’re limited to the number of public alleys on the island, don’t hold us bowlers hostage with poor alley conditions and bad management. After all, we have no choice but to pay the prices you impose so at least give us a decent alley to bowl in.

leeward bowls front desk male associates have the worst customer service skills beyond imagined. they are constantly using there cellphones while customers are right in front of them with out acknowledgeing customers. seems like all they care to pay attention to is there cellphone. that to me is a display of poor customer service skills and will inform my friends about what i have bein noticeing. maybe if management were more strict and more available to notice there employees this wouldn’t be an issue, then you would get more customers.

Comment Date: 6/22/2011 Name: Common Sense
Leeward Bowl is the WORST when it comes to kids not being supervised by parents. Seems most parents dump their responsibilities just to bowl while not caring what the kids are doing. Almost daily kids throwing balls are blocking the entrance. I’ve seen kids steal food to breaking machines while the parents just bowl. You don’t see this at any other bowling center, only at Leeward. Management is well aware of this but is either scared to do anything about it, or they just don’t care. Don’t have to be a rocket scientist to check the validity of this statement. Just go there, look around, and say D’oh!

I love Leeward Bowling alley but the young skinny boy they have working at night and running the desk is terrible! Please replace him with a more efficient employee!!! He is so slow going down the wait list when the whole entire alley is available! I’m not just talking about one time now…..this is every single time! Then, because he is such an intelligent guy…he will refuse you two lanes when you have a party of 8, but give a party of two a pair of lanes! Get rid of this turkey!

Comment Date: 3/2/2011 Name: Avid Bowler
I for one am glad Leeward Bowl is NOT into the entertainment business. With the amount of bowling center closures this past decade, the sport of bowling NEEDS Leeward Bowl to concentrate on the sport more than the entertainment (COSMIC, THEME NIGHTS, etc,) aspect. After all, Leeward Bowl is home to 35 of the 83 leagues that bowls on the island of Oahu. If Leeward Bowl was to eliminate its night time leagues, they would be turning away ~ 1000 guaranteed bowlers a week. That would kill the sport of bowling for sure.

Comment Date: 2/21/2011 Name: kalani
to make good money its is in entertainment value of the center not the leagues. League time would be morning, afternoon, not 6-8p when i can get families to come in and buy food, drinks, and rent shoes at retail price.
let me prelude this by saying i’ve open 2 FEC,family entertainment centers in California the last 4 years.

We recently had a party at Leeward Bar & Grill and the food was EXCELLENT! The prime rib, mahi mahi, and the lomi lomi salmon were my fave. I would definitely want to have LBG cater our party again.

To CONSISTENT BOWLER: On behalf of Leeward Bowl, I apologize for this, and can assure you that the problem has been resolved. I would say come during my Saturday or Sunday afternoon shifts, but there’s always leagues at those times. Come friday night (after 9) if you can. I’d like to meet you.

This is in reference to “another bowler”. Everything the person said from 5/1/10 is in correlation to the comments made from that person from 3/22/10. First of all, my children would not be out and about after 9PM the eve before school because they would be in bed. I don’t know of any parent(s) who would bring their children to an evening activity that starts @ 10PM the night before school. Secondly, Kozmic Bowling is Club-like scene which is probably why they only have it on a Sunday (because most parents wouldn’t allow their under-age children out of the house after 10PM on the eve of school). Just thought I’d put in my 2 cents.

to the comment placed on 5-1-10, Who are you to judge about someone’s parenting skills in the first place? Remember that this is a bowling forum, Not the Dr. Phil show. So, you really need to keep your parenting opinions out this and keep the focus on bowling. Go to the Dr. Phil website if you have a problem about that particular person’s parenting skills.

I’ve been bowling at Leeward Bowl for quite sometime now. Dont usually have any problems with the ladies at the front desk. Love the woman during the week, Rose and Melissa are amazing employees. But I have encountered not once, not twice, but over a few times already some bad service with one certain worker. She works the saturday and sunday night shifts. We sign up for lanes, ask how long the wait will be, she is not only rude and looking like she hates her job, but answers if you pay me under the table I will get you a lane now. What type of service is that. I have to pay extra besides for my games, and bowling shoes. She has blown my mind. And if it wasnt for Rose and Melissa during the week, me and many of my friends probably wouldnt bowl every night during the week. We shouldnt have to pay an extra fee to bowl. And the ways she speaks to people is very rude and inconsiderate. If she hates her job, she shouldnt be there. Hope problem gets solved.

First of all, shouldn’t your daughters be in bed at that time? Such terrible parenting. AND on a school night, how dreadful! Shame on you. I bowl in that 6:00 league, and if our league doesn’t finish on time, that’s beyond the desk clerk’s power. From what I know, Kozmic bowling is scheduled to start at 9:30. Sometimes our league doesn’t finish until 9:45. I’m sure you can wait for 15 minutes. Or were you concerned about the your daughter’s bed-time? Which was supposed to be around 9 pm. Again, nice parenting skills, buddy. Before you criticize others, think about what kind of person you are and the example you set as a parent.

Man I went to kosmic bowl there last night to celebrate my daughter b day. They told me via phone call that it started at 9pm. What they should have said was that kosmic bowl started whenever the leauge was through.. We waited over not to mention the front desk girl with the liquid eye liner whips(the only make up she wore) really acted like she didn’t want to be bothered (what ever happened to customer service?). At $25.00 per hour which is about 1 game with 5 or more pol I should think they’d make it a priority to make one feel welcomed. FAMILIES BEWARE this is not a family oreinted place alcohol and obnoxious drunks every where. To my left people staggering and the lane on the right about 6 men rubbing their bowling ball on their genitals before each turn…did I mention I had 3 girls under the age of twelve…sigh. READ THE COMMENTS BELOW employees actually sign up here to defend themselves and argue with customers… How weird and very un professional is that? Does the manager or owner know about this? And if so is it alright to do so? If so no wonder. This was a new thing for us, but we will never take our family there again. I might go whenever the need arise to get drunk and bowl lol.

Ok people. No more fighting on this thread with each other. If you ever have complaints then talk to the staff. Simple. I might have no say so, but…The employees are doing their best so just show some aloha ok? You’d be grumpy too if customers are constantly trashing your place and not taking responsibility for it. Leeward bowl is the best. XD Well it would be nice if you don’t always have to ask the receptionist to look your way :P. But it’s not that hard to say “excuse me” so he/she knows your their. Other than that this place is friendly and Aloha spirited. Btw to the person who was talking to kawika about the crappy service and all. You would have talked to the manager if you really were having a hard time. Not that hard to ask, unless you really were drunk that far. I’m just saying. And leeward bowl is not racist. leeward Bowl forever!! XD show some aloha spirit guys.

coming to Oahu for Christams, staying in Kailua. I have two boys 9 and 11 who love to bowl and am interested in taking them to bowl a few games. Seems to be a lot of negative reviews about Pali, any suggestions on a nice family place with good atmosphere and food? Also, we do 5 pin up here in Canada, anything like that there or is it all 10 pin? Any help appreciated.

I recently spoke with the secretary of the Palisades League that was at Leeward for some 20 years before they got kicked out. She told me that there’s a lot of favortism at Leeward. Aki would often look the other way for some people and his friends. I was told that her league was kicked out for some the same things that Aki was letting his buddies get away with.

Norm, you seem like a person who wants bowling to survive in the civilian sector of Hawaii. It would be advisable for you to get your facts straight, before posting on a national forum such as this. You can hurt the employees who are trying to elevate the center to a higher plain. Oh in passing, there is no word irreguardless in the English language. Again thanks for all your efforts to bring attention to various center’s good and bad points. I’m sure ownership uses any suggestions to improve their business. We here at Leeward Bowl are trying to provide our customers with a great product, but costs are rising and Aki tries to keep your cost of bowling at a reasonable level.

Kawika is a guy who seems to overstep his position as a desk clerk and assumes an unwarrented managerial posture. Probably going to get jumped by one of us if he keeps talking down to people who are the ones paying for his services. Definitely needs an attitude adjustment. Has to realize that we as customers are providing him with a job by bowling at Leeward Bowl. Maybe he should take a course in interpersonal relations.

My message to you: WHAT sarcasm? You see, this is the kind of cr@p us workers at Leeward Bowl have to put up with day in and day out. It’s amazing what happens when you tell the truth: you get kicked in the teeth, so to speak. Anonynous, 1. You should come down to Leeward and get to know me before you start making negative remarks about someone you’ve NEVER met, and 2. If someone DOES punch me in the face, that is their choice. They will end up in jail, regardless of whether it was provoked or not. Keep THAT in mind.

As a matter of fact, we do host the Hawaii TV Bowling Tournament here at Leeward Bowl at least once a year. We are unable to host Hawaii TV Bowling multiple times a year because our Sunday League Bowlers refuse to give up their Sunday League Bowling. That’s their time to relax, drink, and have a good time. And for that reasoning, we rarely ask the leagues to take off on Sundays.

HAwaii TV Bowling is Held at Leeward bowl Once a Year for the Modified Doubles in the winter session due to the high Volume of weekly Leagues which there are 5 leagues on sundays, and Mr. Brewster I have gotten to know Glenn Personally and the renovations took about a month of closer to finish Im not sure if the 40 plus leagues would like that very much

To Samurai, Most of the real bowlers will practice or compete in houses with good lane irreguardless to conditions of the rest of the house.

Haha!!! Mr. Brewster, I have read the “WHOLE” article, my opinion is that you just talk to much and I want you to put your money where your mouth is or shall I say “fingers” if you read my article I didn’t say anything about you not liking the lanes, but other than that “the center is just crap” in your words. In my “opinion” (since you like that word so much) Leeward is the last nastalgic competition house on the island. With all the leagues and the foot traffic this house get how do you expect to do much of any renovations in the public area. You should know you seen how busy it was wednesday night. YES, Mr. Brewster I was there too, Did you have to reassure yourself about you “opinions” by coming to practice?

What is one to do? The ownership spends $100K to begin their renovation with the bathrooms and some ignoraqnt moron keeps busting the mirrors, putting his fist through the drywall and kicks in the toilet doors. How can you phase in renovations when the things you renovate get trashed? Oh and aqbout the lane conditions, too damn easy, the bowlers scream if they don’t get their weekly 300 game or 800 series. The staff in general treat everyone well, but if you talk to them like they’re garbage what do you exppect in return? The food’s pretty good and reasonably priced. The floors need to be replaced, many tiles missing with the mastic showing. Maybe if guys wouldn’t be trashing the equipment right and left, which then require replacement, the money could go towards fixing up the center. Give Aki some kudos for trying to keep costs down and phasing in the renovations as revenue permits. The only civilian center geared with an emphasis on competitive bowling rather then focusing on entertainment. I’m done.

To Samurai, You need read the whole article before reacting, NOT just part of it. If you read the whole thing, you would have seen that I said that the lanes at Leeward are nice. And If you had read the whole article in my previous posting, you would have seen that I was NOT talking about Carol Furukawa in any way, shape, or form. Now start reading the whole article before you start assuming things.

Comment Date: 6/2/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
To Samurai Bowler, The manager that I was talking about to Leslie is NOT Carol Furukawa. In fact, I know Carol and she’s done a fine job at Leeward. The manager I was talking about in my last posting is from another bowling center (I’ll let you figure out what center I’m was talking about, Hint…Check out my other postings in Hawaii Centers to see which one I was explaining to Leslie)

Comment Date: 6/1/2009 Name: Samurai Bowler

Leslie, You really need to open your eyes and take a good long look at things. How often do you go bowling?, How often do you ask questions about the establishment? Do you even pay attention to what’s going on in the bowling center. Before you start going off on me, I suggest you start looking at things a bit more carefully.

Comment Date: 5/28/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
One more thing Leslie, eventhough this haven’t happen at Leeward but, can you imagine having to wait close to 15 to 20 minutes for a ball return because nobody was in the back, or finding the front desk personnel more focused on playing video games in the game room than being at the desk doing his/her job. Or how about talking to the manager of the bowling center and finding out that the manager has her head on her shouders the hard way. (up her a**) I’ve talked with a bunch of other bowlers from that center that basically said the same thing about that staff and that manager. At Leeward, I could see that Aki is trying to get up par with things but, I still see that they have a lot work still have to do.

For one thing, you did not ask me ANYTHING about the janitors, and another thing: When you’re drunk off your a** like you were that night (and I know you were, too, because you were being extremely OBNOXIOUS about the whole situation, and you wouldn’t have acted that way had you been SOBER), you tend to say things that you didn’t mean. And boy, did you say some things that really floored me. So if you want better service, show a little respect. How’s THAT for a concept? Before you guys b*tch about the employees there, try putting up with people who are drunk night in and night out. You’d be crabby, too! We’re only human!

Norm, please check the facts about a bowling center before you start griping about how dilapidated it is or how disfunctional the staff and management are. Just trying to keep the evaluation process of our Hawaii bowling centers on an even plane. I enjoy my time at the civilian as well as the military centers on the island. Although the military centers do have base security to deal with vandals and rowdy drunks, I have been told Leeward is about to implement an anti-vandalism policy soon to control the on going damages to the center’s fixtures and equipment.

The worst bowling alley…Friday may 1st went there with a couple of friends I fell done well bowling because the ground was slippery two of my friends went up to the front desk and ask the worker that was working that night who’s name was kawika if he could get somebody down to our lanes to wipe the floor because it was some kind of grease he specifically told them that “oh we don’t have a rag to clean it”…the worker kawika came down to our lane to go to walk to back to fix the pins cause the pin was stuck in the gutter…well he walked back I asked him “excuse me do you think somebody could wipe this area that was slippery” then he told me no I can’t do nothing about that and that’s not his job so I asked what about janitors do you guys have a janitor that could help us because it wasn’t safe then he says oh yeah we have janitors I asked oh then can u call him for us he says no I gotta talk to the janitor not him…I said what so you cannot call somebody or the janitor to wipe the floor and I have to call the janitor myself he said yeah I told him so what if someone else falls down and break their back that bowlng alley could be sued and kawika said yeah you guys would be able to sue us for that if I was his manager I would fire him.

Its a great place to go to have fun. They DON’T discriminate, like people have said they’re just old timers. I’m white as all heck, and part Hawaiian, but they treat me just fine. Maybe you had an attitude, MOST people wouldn’t respond to an ill-attitude. Get over it, and speak up…that might help too.

Leeward Bowling Alley is not a racist place. The people who work there are old timers and are very busy. Yes, they could use a boost in customer service but i dont believe they are racist. I’m caucasian and have been going there for roughly for a year, and i’ve been treated fairly like the locals. I have not once been discriminated and even bowl there during night feeling safe. I don’t understand why people say they are racist, maybe you just had a rough first time experience there. Give them another shot. They’re great, and so is there food!

Concerned about public bowling centers closing, no where for you to bowl? Try the military houses where the facilities are clean, food is great and the prices are totally inexpensive. Most military houses will sponsor civilian guests onto the base. Some centers have programs where you can get a pass for a year to get on the base. It just takes filling out a short application. Try the military centers today, you’ll be glad you did.

I couldnt believe the racism here. My friend got a lane because he was a local. I arrived and joined him. We were both asked to leave. White people arent welcone there. Its like Mississippi in 1920. I was surprised we werent hung from a banyan tree. I tried to make a police report but was told discrimination isnt illegal in hawaii unless it comes with violence. I will never return. Leeward bowl is a clean and sanitary enviroment. But the Front desk does not have any customer service whatsoever. You could wait there in line and they won’t notice you.

Great upgraded equipment. Prices just went up again, but with the drop of available bowling facilities, what you gonna do? Pay or no play! Oh well, just had to get that off my chest, but I hope there is some kind of end to losing all of our public alleys. 5 left, and only 2 going be left by next year! Leeward is my favorite right now, but the front desk persons, like all other alleys, are not the nicest people around. Definately not into customer service, but just straight forward. I’ll keep going back to Leeward no matter what, but a nice smile once in a while would be awesome! Great food too!

if your white you will be denied getting a lane and if you do somehow get a lane and want to eat, you will be ignored for 15minn then a local guy walks up to get food and the order will be taken right away..nice place if you like discrimination

The BEST food from ANY bowling center ANYWHERE! The lanes are nice too. Classy place. Highly recommend it. Baked Salmon is BEST on the island!
