There is a front desk lady named Debby who talks too fast, has no patience with customers or co-workers, and reminds everyone within earshot that she has O.C.D. And she curses a lot. (Yes, you are heard. F-bombs) The bartender is always at the front desk or snackbar, the snackbar person is always at the front desk, and they don’t act like they want to wait on you when you finally track them down. Trash looks like it is never emptied when it needs to be. More to come . . .

The counter lady Name Debbie is so rude to the customer. It just makes me sick . No one should be talk to the way she does to most people who are there for a good time .

I used to go there ablot! Especially on Wednesdays me andy friends would go have a good time and do a little singing. Last night, however, happened to be my birthday. It fell on a Wednesday so I told all my friends to come to the bowling alley! Big mistake. Turns out my license expired on the day of my birthday, and they wouldn’t let me drink, they actually got an attitude about it. Which I thought was wierd, because I frequented there so often, I knew the bartender on a first name basis. And I’m 26. We got a full refund and left, and we were going to drop some serious money there.

Visited Blue Hen Lanes this week and used a coupon for $6.99 for children – unlimited bowling 2-5:30 pm – included food/refreshments. When we got there the refreshment stand was closed and the attendant said there were no refreshments – false advertisement. I was disappointed to say the least.

I do believe that the staff is a little bit more friendly to their friends and family. But aren’t we all? I think the staff is getting better at being more friendly. I love blue hen and used to bowl there myself. Both my father and grandparents are well liked and they have their issues but none that has made them leave. That’s all I have to say.

After bowling at Blue Hen Lanes for 18 years, spending tons of money on bowling, food and drink – we were talked to like a dogs by the elderly man at the counter when we arived there tonight for league bowling – I had brought in a pizza to share with my team for my birthday, you would have thought I had brought a nuclear missile in there. How rude he was. Unacceptable.
I have bought countless food and drink items there and they are pricy and not that good, but I still bought them. Many people bring in food when it is their birthdays. Needless to say I quit the league, I paid up for the rest of the year, but will never return there. I wouldn’t recommend these lanes to anyone and will deter people I know from going there.

I wish the food at the snack would not cost so much and some times it is hard finding some one working at the snack bar and when you do they act like they do not want to wait on you. (leauge bowler) I have a better time bowling at P L

Stone’s Throw Pro Shop & Blue Hen Lanes is a winning combination. Located in the Newark Shopping Center,in Newark,Delaware. Andrew Stone Owner/Operator, offers a full line of bowling equipment and accessories, custom fitting / drilling and custom embroidery. The shop is small but offers that one on one service that has become a thing of the past in most bowling centers. Look no further fellow bowlers, there is a real pro shop in Delaware and it is open when you need it. (302) 731-3100

It is a very nice center, but you have to go into the shopping center to enter. The easiest way to remember where the bowling alley is when you see the Super 8 motel, the shopping center is next door. Turn into the shopping center and make the first or second right.

As a wheelchair bowler, I must say the folks at Blue Hen lanes are the best. They have treated me very well for several years and are once again sponsoring me for the 29th National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Spokane, Washington this July. I would like to see more wheelchair bowlers at the lanes, I could use the Competition..

The long lines for bowling block the front door and the front desk give out numbers, just give everyone a number. Then call the number over the loud speaker. All so its a safety issue

I have been bowling at blue hen for years and i have to say they have some good points that i like and some points that i do not like. i think that with the return of freda things have became better but they are still lacking in alot of areas. the counter staff for one is pretty good on some nights and other nights they are very much lacking. some nights the counter staff is very nice and welcoming and will do anything in the world to help you but other nights they act very smug and act like your not as important as their next smoke break. the bar staff to me really shines and is a highlight of the center. the snack bar prices are crazy and they really over charge for not alot of food. and the staff most times seems to care more about being on the phone than taking care of customers. as for the look of the center i feel like they have done a good job and it looks really good. i do have to say that the seating is not well thought out and could have been done better. the lanes themselves and find to be pretty good alot of people complain about the shot but the point to bowling is to change to different lane conditions so i don’t mind if its not the same week to week.

I think the place is great. I’ve been going there for a while now, and have never ever been treated poorly by anyone there. If you want to complain about not getting a lane then pay the $10 and reserve one. If you have four people, its only $2.50 a person. And if you can’t afford THAT, then maybe you should not be going out at all…which means more lanes available for ME and MY friends!

I have found this place to be a nice place to bowl. I bowl in just about every tournament they host and go a lot on dollar nights and rent-a-lane nights. It’s been said that their customer service is bad, and I have to somewhat agree. But, after always bowling here and chatting with the employees, I have no problem getting a lane on any night. I show up early, and patiently wait, and get treated nicely. I think that if you are nice to them, they are friendly back. But if you walk in with an impatient or an attitude, they treat you like crap.
So, I’d just like to say to everyone, You get what you give!. If you’re rude, you get rudeness back.
I know that’s not the “proper” customer service, but, that’s how people are nowadays.

As a 10 year old I bowled there for several years. As a new driver I played pinball there for years. Chuck Gatrel became a good friend.

Some of the staff need to learn how to talk to and help customers, some of the staff is fantastic, my problem is the wednesday night karaoke cosmic bowling. They want ten dollars to reserve a lane and it doesnt go twoard your bowling, just in there pocket for the privlage, if you don’t get there 45 min early and be first in line, you can’t get a lane, especially when there “friends” are there hanging out not waiting in line and they get a lane no problem. They really need some new people and some new ways to get a lane, first come first serve.

Comment Date: 2/21/2008 Name: Anonymous
The coupons I receive offer a great savings however customer service has gotten much worse over the years. Not only can you not get a lane after you call and are told there is open bowling but then there is a long wait.
And many times you’re told it will only be a few minutes since bowlers are finishing up at a lane only to give up after a 1/2 hour when another staff member tells you it will be another 45 minute wait. Nothing like wasting people’s time. In this day and age we are all too busy for this. Be up front and give at least a close to accurate answer when giving a customer a timeframe. They really should allow open bowlers to call or go online and reserve lanes. I’ve gone there many times and it has been a good time, but I’m not likely to go back since this has happened to me so many times recently.

I have to agree with the AL bowler. Their customer service is getting worse. They do have WONDERFUL people like Nancy, Julie and Charlie but I’ve always said.. if you don’t like working with people, DON’T TAKE A JOB IN CUSTOMER SERVICE. In this day and age, NO ONE wants to work, but you gotta pay the bills and if you decide on customer service you better darn PRETEND you like what you’re doing. This center has made vast improvements, but some of the staff behind the front counter seriously need a good talking to. I’ve found they do cater to *friends* or *family* and that’s not right. Lose the attitude and the place will be back to being the BEST!

Trying to get an open lane is next to impossible. When asked about open lanes, staff will look at you like you have three heads and say leagues are more important than indiviudal bowlers. If you want to have a party there and get charge outrageous prices, they are all for that.

I have been a regular league bowler at Blue Hen for the past 10 years, and over the past 10 years I have seen alot of changes. The upgraded lanes and automated scoring and new tables are great. Nancy, John, Jeannette, Charlie etc…are great always a pleasure to see and are definitely “lifers’ at the alley. Some frustrations that I have is that many times the lanes are not properly cleaned up after a kid’s birthday party (tables not wiped down, sticky floors, lanes not oiled in time for our leagues to start, even dirty bathrooms). The kids who work at the snackbar come and go, and some of them don’t take their jobs seriously. There is one person who was recently hired who doesn’t have a clue as to what he is doing; not quite sure why the new boss hired some of these new people.

To the Al guy, they have the best full time long term employees out of all the bowling centers combined. It must be a great company to work for because I know the long term employees. Years of service combined is in the hundreds. Where do you find that? Although I’m not sure how they do it. Being a league bowler for years, they have to put up with some miserable people that on their way home, they start thinking of what to complain about the following week.

Comment Date: 2/11/2007 Name: Customer Service does lack
I’ve bowled here on and off leagues, and they are definitely lacking in the customer service area. They are also more expensive than other lanes. After they upgraded their lanes and approaches, as well as their scoring systems, one also noticed how bad the sensors are at detecting which pins are up/down. They should have spent a little more money a lot sooner.
The league bowlers almost make up for the alley however. It cam be a fun place to bowl.

I basically grew up at Blue Hen Lanes and I must say I do not like it at all. I am friends with many of the employees but things there have just gone downhill. It upsets me to see the place suffer as it does now.

Ok, I go to blue hen lanes once a week, every week for the past two years, and everytime I’m there one of the staff members seem to have a serious attitude problem. One of which has posted a comment on this site. I go, I pay my money and never have I been to ANY establishment thats supposed to cater to its customers and felt like I was a nuisance or like I was interrupting their day. She literally ignored me when I clearly walked in the door, and was standing at the desk. The whole time she stood there with her back turned to me talking on the phone. Again, I know she seen me standing at the desk because she answered the phone right in front of me. If you are having 1 bad day, that’s comepletely understandable but, there has not been one day that I’ve gone there and she hasn’t had this miserable looking scowl on her face. I know I am not the only one who has notice this completely unneccesary behavior. I pray she is not related to the owner. Someone in management should really explain PROPER customer service to this individual

I do not work at Blue Hen Lanes but I think they are the best. They are friendly, professional and I feel comfortable there!

I may be biased because I work at Blue Hen lanes but i think it is one of the better bowling alleys in the area. No where else do you get such fast courteous and personal services than here. The staff, including myself, dedicate ourselves to attracting new bowlers and keeping them there. We also strive to take care of the bowlers who have been at blue hen for years. IF you need to join a league we have the best and if your thinking about booking a birthday party no other bowling center does it better. If you want a homey atmosphere where everybody know everybody and customer services is the priority then Blue Hen lanes is for you!

Recently, I’ve moved to Middletown. Soon there will (Fall-2006) be a brand new bowling alley. Since the commute from bowling to my house will be about 10 minutes, it just makes sense to leave Blue Hen after 10 years. I will miss the bowlers I’ve been bowling with and most of the staff (Nancy, Janette, Julie & a few others). However, I know how the Manager manages First State. I also know that the manager of Blue Hen is almost non-exist. I can only hope First State of Middletown is as comforting as Blue Hen, but not as expensive.

I have been bowling in Bluehen lanes for 6 years and have never been treated poorly until the last year. If you aren’t on a league or if you don’t know the staff kids personally you will never get on a lane. CM

I have been bowling at Blue Hen Lanes for 15+ years, and know most of the staff as well as the bowlers. I also league bowl at 1 other center and bowl in tournaments. Lets face it, if you’re that good of a bowler, you should be able to adjust to any condition. Look at the pros. Do you think they are carrying an average like 140 in every bowling center they bowl in? Blue Hens conditions are not easy nor are they hard. I think they are fair conditions that will prove the kind of bowler you actually are. People want a cake walk, and if it was, bowling would get boring real fast. As far as league bowlers, I think we’re treated better there than other alleys. They just need a good solid manager that everyone knows……….like the old ones.

Brunswick Blue Hen Lanes in Newark Shopping Center does not cater to its league bowlers as other centers do. Other centers have top Delaware bowlers due to lane conditions that Blue Hen refuses to update. They only strip the lanes once per day-unlike other houses that strip lanes 2x per day. Blue Hen is way below standards when it comes to getting top bowlers there.
