Bowled there for the first time this weekend. I really, really liked the vibe of the place. Small, 12 lane house. There ‘s a little birthday party area with tables and benches down some stairs off to the side of lane #1. So, if you were attending a party there lane one would be at hip level. While I’m sure the lane conditions aren’t ideal for open bowlers I found that anything I threw down the middle hooked over to the 4-7 and anything I put too far out sailed right to the 6-10. Tough finding the pocket. The place could use a good cleaning as there was an inch-thick layer of dust on everything and the house balls had HUGE knicks and gouges. But there’s a lot to be said for the happy atmosphere there. Both league and open bowlers.

Linden Lanes Comments

Their is a problem with oiled lane patterns at Linden Lanes which has been on going since the 2014-15 winter season. Before this time 300 games were not an unusual event, bowlers (like myself) could expect reliable & consistant lanes week to week. Not always perfect, but fair.
I have watched people I’ve bowled with, over the past 10 years, have 10-20 pts whittled off their averages over the past 2 yrs. putting to rest any thoughts I had about my own skills falling off.
Management, I’m told, has been made aware of discontent, and we’re only 9 weeks into the 2015-16 season….and we’re not the only league to pitch a fit.
I’ve posted my name because hiding behind anonymous or an e-mail sudonym would defeat my point. Leagues, like our own, are experiencing meltdowns to their averages.
We enjoy bowling for fun and for the competition, but if alley conditions are not fair then what is the point?

Linden Lanes is pretty nice. Sure, Jersey lanes is much nicer, I think, but this is pretty well kept too. Light pocket hits carry quite well. I think this is one of the nicer Nationwide houses (as compare to Hudson lanes or Garden Palace). Both Linden and Jersey Lanes are perfect alternatives to Hy-way Bowl, which is the worst in NJ!!!

Comment Date: 3/17/2015 Name: Zeke
you are all looking at the negative things about this bowling alley. i myself am a league bowler for the juniors. yes, we do have some bowlers that need improvement. but the whole point of bolwing is to have fun. and if you want to improve on your bowling, maybe you should join a league yourself. linden lanes has been a good help for my bowling skills, and i think it is a great place to hang out and hve fun.

Tiffany I have been bowling league since I was 5 years old and I’ve never been in a lead to where you win first place to get your money back as a kid as a teenager or as an adult so for you to think that is completely and utterly a bunch of BS
And if you really think that then I have an idea why don’t you go find Kelly Kulick bring her to the house and then bowl again against her and let’s see if you could be on the tour

Comment Date: 11/20/2012 Name: League bowler
Insanely easily league shot for no talent bowlers who drop the ball up the ditch. Please change this joke and reward talented bowlers.

Comment Date: 10/4/2012 Name: 27
Linden Lanes, please fix your lanes. Way too oily and doesn’t allow for the ball to hook. Really is getting frustrating trying to get a decent average when the ball just goes straight. The hook ball is 3/4 of the fun and I’m not having fun.

To Xlomara,
It must be gutter ball city for you that you can’t enjoy a game of bowling. Just saying.

GOSH….hellooooo….can someone please tell me what the hell is so fun abotu goiong bowling

Comment Date: 6/24/2010 Name: unknown
Hey Tiffany lemme ask you this. Do people in other professional sports who win go “give me the money”? NO. Does a football team scream GIVE ME MY MONEY like a 5 year old after winning the super bowl? NO. Do the soccor teams in the Worl Cup scream “I WANT MY MONEY” after winning. NO. Get over yourself, if your so great go be a proffessional and win lots of money. p.s. if (and thats a big if) you ever get to be good enough to make a living off of bowling you’ll know the one thing they never do is complain about money… And everyone thinks the teenagers are rude, just look at this b*tch.

Old Lady? The old lady has been retired now for almost 3 years ! When was the last time you went to linden lanes? Leagues are up !

Comment Date: 9/11/2008 Name: Candy825
First of all, It is not a good place for leagues. It is a wonderful place for a couple or a few friends to go for an afternoon game. It is overwhelmed with teenagers. And yes the old lady is rude at times. Usually after she has dealt with a bunch of RUDE teenagers. The old guy at the counter is RUDE also after he deals with the teenagers. The price is fine its a little cheaper then neighboring Jersey Lanes and such. But what hasnt gone up (food, gas, tolls) in the last two years?
This is one of the better local bowling centers that are accommodating for kiddie Parties. GET OVER IT!!!
The leagues have been gone, its good to know where you can go for a kiddie party and where you can go for a grown night out and where serious players can go for leagues, just prioritize!!!

Comment Date: 9/10/2008 Name: just a bowler
funny about complaining about linden lanes..i have been all over the world..yes the world…and no bowling establishment the size of linden lanes which honestly isnt that big..puts the amount of care into the place as well..its a real nice center..maybe u all league bowlers should stop complaining about stuff the house has no control over…like ur league prize fund..or getting people for your league..or thinking your all so great and the reason why u cant bowl is the houses fault…never hear a true bowler complain about the house they just adapt…

Comment Date: 8/6/2008 Name: Sal
Hey guys. If you bowl at Linden Lanes you know who i am. I worked very hard on the majors league, Thursday nights at 915pm. I got it sponsored by Budweiser and i am looking to return this league back to its glory days of 24 teams. Remember when It had a waiting list for teams to get in? Budweiser has made a very generous donation to get the league going. The cap is 655 and the league will be handicaped. There will be a match play system and the house will be doing all the stats and prize fund work. This means that no one will be getting paid and “taking” money from your guys prize fund, what is put in will be returned. Lets make it happen! So far there are 14 teams wow look more than last season, you bowlers know what kind of prize fund there will be.

First off Linden Lanes is a wonderful bowling center. The place has finally updated its old school look with new scorers, new tables and a new tile floor (although the floor is highly criticized because of a step). The workers here try very hard to keep the bowlers happy. But in my opinion it is the bowlers and some league officials who are ruining the leagues with funky rules and driving bowlers out of the house. Another thing everyone complains about the shot being inconsistent on a 2nd shift league, what do you expect when different people on different teams play different lines in the league the bowls on the fresh? Sal runs a king of the hill tournement to give you loud mouth guys a chance to “show off” but you don’t show up? some people even say its to easy? it is definately not easy ask people like fish or vigs. Fish… runs that proshop like no other. He watches you bowl and chooses the best ball for you, after he chooses a perfect ball the kid drills you a bomb ! every ball he drills me i shoot an honor game with. Most of you guys are correct about certain workers being lazy but MORE workers try their hardest to keep the leagues happy and running smoothly. Perhaps if the league bowlers told management what they expect and did a little bit of promotion on their own the leagues would once again prosper, guys remember when barton and majors had a waiting list ?
For the person who said that the house does not give league money back… It is you social league bowlers who vote on the prize fund. The house has no say in the money and it is you guys once again not the house who choose to have the end of the year party. I feel linden lanes is a great place to bowl and hang out. The workers are top notch all around. But it is the league bowlers who are ruining the leagues and are doing nothing but saying well go else where.

Comment Date: 4/8/2008 Name: great bowler
This place used to be great. Like I said used to be. Then they decided to take a non bowler and let him manage. The guy knows nothing about bowling and bowling leagues. He barely knows the bowlers (any of the good ones). The leagues continue to go down hill. They need to get a good bowler to manage that place, someone with knowledge of what bowlers want. I much rather have the old lady or that young guy back, aside from never smiling (sorry) he knew it all.anything about bowling he knew. He fixed any and all league issues. And to make things better he got involved, he bowled 7 leagues in his own house. First off linden needs to get rid of mope and her sunday buddy – they are the worst. When you walk up to the desk they are NEVER around. If u call before hand to check for lanes opps no answer. I want this place to be the best is always was and always should be.

Comment Date: 2/20/2008 Name: League Bowler
As for the last person who left a comment about the leagues not getting all of their money back…try joining a competitive league instead of one of the social leagues where the bowlers are there to have fun and dont worry about the money. The center is on the up and up. Rich the manager is keeping things going ona daily basis. He is working hard to get the leagues back up to what I remember them being years ago. The staff there is great for the most part. Chuckie does a great job with the machines keeping them running. The guys behind the desk are really friendly and everyone knows what they are doing. the two guys that work the desk seem like they are trying to get this place back into shape with running tournaments and coming up with new ideas for leagues. The Snack Bar is great…food is amazing and mostly homemade. There are a few people that work there that are lazy though and thats the only downfall..that girl that works the desk with the guy on sundays are never to be found when we need them and the other guy that works in the back seems lazy and always has an attitude.

Comment Date: 1/20/2008 Name: Tiffany
This is the only place for league bowlers that i know that you can not earn your money back for 1st place. 1st place winners want to win back all the money that they paid out for dues. We do NOT want a party, we don’t want no dinner we just want the money. Show me the money. The person who runs the leagues and insist on a party should be arrested and jailed for crooking the books. Give us our money.

Comment Date: 11/19/2007 Name: league bowler
This place continues to go downhill, and management does not care. Every season, more teams drop out of all the leagues, and leagues are moving to other houses. This has to tell you something. All they care about is bowling parties, and put out a horrible shot. Been bowling there for 20 years, and this is the last

Comment Date: 8/4/2007 Name: Sumrfun

This place is the best! So much fun at such an affordable price.

Comment Date: 12/20/2005 Name: Rich
Just like to say that after searching the net for information on the name of a league at Woodbridge Lanes, I was pleased to find a URL for Woodbridge Lanes with more info than I ever expected.
Which brings me to Linden Lanes. Anticipation was high thinking I might be able to keep up with my weekly games BUT “Linden needs a webpage”. I guess with the higher rates being paid this year, they could keep the little bottle of *whine* and get a WEBPAGE!
PS I agree with tom.
Worried too much about kiddie parties and not enough about the bowlers and leagues that are consistent every week.

Comment Date: 11/29/2005 Name: tom
If you’re a league bowler, go elsewhere. The old hag manager only cares about kiddie birthday parties and treats the leagues like second class. Shot is very inconsistent.

Comment Date: 10/17/2013 Name: Sadly-No longer a center for league bowlers
Unfortunately the lane conditions for leagues have deteriorated to the point that it is almost comical. Averages in every league are down substantially since last year. If the management can obtain a new lane machine, and put a reasonable shot down, perhaps they could restore the faith of their dedicated bowlers before the mass exodus occurs at the end of the league half/season.

I understand that Gary DeBoer rolled a 877 (279,300,298)last Tuesday, 10/14. With a series like that, I thought that there would have been something in the sports page of the local newspaper. I thought that would be a plus also for Boonton Lanes!

My family has been bowling there (leagues and fun) since the 1980s and it’s the best lanes I’ve bowled at (which are about 9 lanes)! I highly recommend them.

Comment Date: 6/21/2009 Name: Ron
I thought the staff there has always been very cool. Matt at night and that guy who get’s things going early on Sundays is cool too!
Complaints… they have no ProShop to speak of. Never anything in stock including NewSkin and bowling tape. The balls are $150 there and you can get them online for $77. It’s just weird that way.
The lanes are usually bone dry no matter when you go. They must be cutting back and using little oil to stretch out the costs further.
This place has TONS of specials though! The most generous to customers I have EVER seen! You can bowl 15 games for $12 about 4 days a week!

Comment Date: 7/9/2008 Name: Much Improved
The complaints prior to summer 2007 are valid about the lane conditions. That is no longer the case.
Synthetic lanes were installed, and a top notch mechanic is on duty. He’s got the machines working just fine. If you bowl here, and find yourself still complaining about conditions, I have to say you need to find another sport. I am in 3 leagues here, and the average has gone up 15 pins across all leagues since last summer. I am not the only person.
The ONLY complaint is about the temperature inside. Its the middle of summer, and it is HOT in there. No air conditioning, or very little. Thermostat reads 81 degrees in there. People all around are drenched in sweat and beat red. Not enjoyable for social leagues. Once that is resolved, no worries whatsoever. All I can say is if you were turned off bowling there before, give it another shot, you will like what you see.

Comment Date: 2/26/2008 Name: Linda
I was surprised at the comments were so unfavorable. I have bowled here the past 9 months on two different leagues and I find the staff very helpful. While we all grumble about oil patterns, there is always oil (even in the summer). Never having bowled at Boonton when Mike was there I cannot compare it but to me its a decent place.

Comment Date: 1/28/2007 Name: been here for 17 years and will be leaving..
I have bowled here for to many years.. Mike who was a pain in the butt and lazy, was better then this company that owns it now.. Ok, people that work there are rude.. most of them at pizza hut have no clue, Sarah and Linda at least know what their doing.. As for the desk I believe hes name is kevin ( the one that replaced Mike ) at least tries to help.. All the rest need to be replaced, or sent for classes on how to treat people.. OK when Mike and he dad owned the place the oil wasn’t always being changed and the people weren’t as mean… I have been in the back woods of PA. and bowled on much better lanes and so much more advanced then Boonton Lanes.. Sad but true… Soon to be Ex- Bowler and many say they are leaving too..

Comment Date: 11/20/2006 Name: N/A
Only reason I still go there is because I’m on a league, but I don’t know for how much longer. The re-vamp of the approach area is a nightmare, and you have ball returns that tear the balls up. If they’re not able to fix the lanes properly, my ball is going into my attic for a long rest.

Comment Date: 10/9/2006 Name: N/A
Went there a couple time on Sunday because of special price if U get there before 11:30. The staff there were cruel, not helpful. I agreed with other post that they need to be update with their staffs not just the lane. The old lady with an attitude. I took the kid to have fun, but instead met with the old lady at the counter that turned me off. We won’t go there again.

Comment Date: 6/11/2006 Name: League/Big Time customer
i have bowled here for some years now and the lanes are always different and never consistent and the best people there are Tina,Bob,Nacy and Kevin other than that this place is bad. the owner is lazy and doesnt want to do anything else but sit around i can manage this place better with my friends.

Great place for family fun!!!!!!!!!

Comment Date: 2/10/2006 Name: league bowler
The management does not listen, lane consistency
does not exist. The ball returns are the worst. As for the staff the bartenders are ok, there is only one good person at the desk his name is Kevin. The rest have attitudes. The price is outrageous for a game of open bowling. The facility is old and needs to be updated. The owners [nationwide] better wake up.
A lot of good people are talking about moving their leagues or stop bowling altogether!

Comment Date: 9/21/2005 Name: Dean Eltzer
Lanes are ok the staff is very bad especially if you get one of the older members. They aren’t very helpful and actually have an attitude problem.

I have been bowling there for at least 4 years and they have never had any problems, they have helpful staff and I even got lessons from the owner. They don’t have the greatest pro shop but the pizza hut and bar make up for it.

Comment Date: 7/1/2004 Name: Local Bowler
If you are a real bowler, stay away! The lanes are a joke. Your White Dot will start hooking as soon as it touches the lanes.

I bowl at wallington lanes atleast twice a week and I personally know most of the staff …I also know who “tired of the whining” nothing he said is not true. I have seen that done atleast a dozen times…dnt go their and act like an a**h*le..I dnt know how u dnt give this place a 10 out of 10 their service is great and those that are complaining of pricing I have bowled in most of the bowling alleys in the area such as parkway lanes Lodi lanes brunswick lanes and bowler city …the managers at the other alleys are a**h*les..and for whoever said that the managers aren’t real bowlers then challenge them to a match…they all bowl in leagues and hold outstanding averages!!!

for anyone who has been to wallington lanes before or for those who may be coming soon. watch out for the snack bar “manager”. i only use that term because it’s her offical title. she in no way lives up to her position. she would rather write false statements to the center red book than do her job. she is very rude to customers and has charged wrong prices to them. i would recomend going to another center to bowl.

i love when managers at this place have no idea what is going on yet feel they should open their mouths. one manager loves to do this and i still wonder how he has a job. the manager i’m refering to is the snack bar manager. he is very rude not only to other employees but also customers. he just loves to yell and “repremand” employees who are doing what they were told to do by higher managers including charles the general manager. all while having no clue as to what is going on. thanks for making wallington lanes an unfriendly place eileen

Hello again people im back again with another installment of “check urself before you bash us” my last comments explained a few examples of how some people act when they come to wallington lanes. Heres a few more morsels for you to chew on. These both occured just last night. A group of guys and girls was bowling on an end lane. As im coming back from the mens room i see 1 of the guys running down to the machine area so i go after him. I found him standing in the back shop area holding a ball. I said “sir u have to leave, ur not allowed back here” his response(get ready for this) “why not? My girlfriends ball came back here and i thought id look around” i was speechless! Ok,come and have fun bowling but if u REALLY dont understand why u cant just walk into the machine area then u shouldnt be allowed outside without adult supervision! The next example happened 4 lanes down. A couple of wiseguys launched 3 16lb balls, simultaneously, down the lane. Obviously hitting, and breaking, the sweep. When the manager confronted them about it the response was”wasnt us,it just broke” um yeah ok. ATTN bowlers 1. Just because you pay 5.50 for a game, you are NOT allowed in the machine area or to run down the lanes and get your own balls. 2. If u do intentional damage you will be asked to leave. If these seem unfair then please find something else to do with your time.

i read all the comments about wallington lanes and although no opinion can be construed as wrong….grow up people! i happen to work there as a mechanic and my experiences with some people just defies belief. i like dealing with people but how some of you act just falls into the “oh my god!” category. one example i remember was a group of about 15 people, who obviously had too much to drink, who actually accused me of hiding behind the lanes and messing with their games(yup, ive got nothing better to do). and if i had a nickel for every time i had to chase open bowlers off the lanes(and i mean down by the machine area)because they seem to think its their right just to walk down the lanes and put themselves in jeopardy, id own amf!

My friends and I bowl here once a week. We love the waitress service because we can eat and drink while never having to leave our lane. The food is actually real food not like some mom and pop dinner quality food. If you go on certain nights the bowling is VERY reasonably priced. Wed nights $5 for the 1st game $1 for every other game and a $1 for shoes. We always get fresh shot of oil before our league too. Def the nicest bowling atmosphere around!

Reading some peoples comments, your not serious bowlers lol.
You can’t ever have lanes that are too oily. There is never too much oil on the lane when your talking about a THS.
I was out here for a JBT, and the place is very well kept, the machines are in good working order, and I will definately be returning for tournaments in the future.

TWO WORDS: SELL OUT! This place is a joke. Lanes are good but the staff & everything else there stinks. RUDE RUDE RUDE & the prices are through the roof!

This is a very rude, unhappy place. The people behind the counter don’t do a thing to make your experience there a better. They always seem annoyed you ask them for something. The manager looks like a company drone that should receive some lessons in being a human being. I have one bit of advise for all the people wortking at Wallington Lanes, if you are that unhappy with your jobs, then maybe you should go work somewhere else. They are only interested in collecting the money and getting rid of you. The previous post is a perfect example of this place having no heart.

We held a charity event at Wallington Lanes on 4/26/08 and all I can say is the staff including the manager on duty was very rude not only to me but all of my supporters from the time we stepped foot in the door and to make matters worse when we received the bill it was nearly $6,000 when I had a contract of $2,200. The manager could not add on a calculator to save his life, so my accountant (thank God she was there) figured out the bill for him. It was just a very horrible experience and unfortunately our annual event that we’ve hosted at this bowling alley for the past 2 years will be held elsewhere next year. I’ve never been treated like this in my life and it was very hurtful to say the least. I use to recommend them to everyone, now I will NEVER recommend them in the future.

Overall wallington lanes is pretty good. its a very well kept 1980s style alley. three sets of alleys. the main prob about this place is overpriced food and all ways mostly crowded. lane wise, to me there is a 50/50 chance they will be good. either to oily or to dry. also some of the workers are unfriendly towards younger teens. this sis definitively a family oreinted alley. personally i like less crowded and unadvertised alleys. i would only go to wallington for leagues. i personally wouldn’t go for practice. i would rate them a 5 out of ten

For all bowlers,Greg Nichols, and Mike McKinley are the ones at AMF that deals with the bowling centers everyday operations. So,if you have complaints, call 1-800-342-5263.Things won’t get better until you people call these jokers.

Comment Date: 11/29/2007 Name: concerned bowler
my advice to anyone that has complaints about this,or any amf center, call 1-800-dial-amf,and follow the prompts.you can complain all you want, but nothing’s going to get done until the main corporate office gets these complaints.they do have a rep for east coast, that can deal with this situation,or any other center!keep in mind, amf doesn’t pay squat for employees, when it comes to running a bowling center.the more people complain to amf,the better.remember, you get what what you pay for.

I give them a score of 1 out of ten, and thats only because they had bowling balls for us to use. If you went there, you would understand why such a simply basic thing impressed me so much. I was one of the party for the Oct 27th, 2007 birthday night out for some “Extreme Bowling.” I have a few extremes for you…extremely terrible music, extremely rude guy who treated us like we were trying to steal frames of the game (though we already paid for it), extremely poor customer service except for this one guy, extremely unprofessional dealing of issues in their lanes, extremely annoying to wait 15 minutes for Nachos because the workers are too busy flirting with each other, extremely horrible atmosphere, and did I mention extremely terrible music? Here is the funny part, their add actually says:Xtreme Bowling. An adventure in lights, music, wild bowling challenges, and your favorite food and beverages! That is hilarious because there was HORRIBLE music, NO cool lights, and the food was way OVERPRICED. We actually went home to play bowling on the Wii since it s*cked so badly here. I read bad reviews about this place, but went anyway because I had gone a couple of months ago and it was ok. I WILL NEVER MAKE THE MISTAKE OF WASTING MY MONEY AND A SATURDAY NIGHT HERE. Bowler City in Hackensack or Brunswick Lanes for night time bowling if you are looking to stay fairly local.

Comment Date: 10/29/2007 Name: Tracy
My friends and I have gone here a couple of times in the past for ‘extreme bowling’ on saturday nights, and have usually had a great time with great music. This saturday, however, october 27th, was atrocious. We (10 of us) arrived at 10:45 and found it odd that half the parking lot was empty. We go in, pay for our shoes and 1st game. The teams were 6 girls against 4 guys. The guys finished first, and that put us on a ‘timer’ to finish in a certain amount of time, which we were not aware of. At the top of the 10th frame, our game turns off. When we tried to ask for help, this IDIOT who kept walking around the place like he was DON CORLEONE with a coffee stirrer sticking out of his mouth, was rude as anything for no reason. 1st he tried to say we bowled extra frames, then my sister pointed out the stupidity behind that, so he just walked away from her, mumbling “the problem is, you f****** people don’t know how to…” and i didn’t hear the rest of it. This is the language he used in front of 2 teenage girls who were with us, by the way. On top of that guy being a completely rude idiot, the price of food was outrageous. It’s Wallington, not Beverly Hills!!! My niece orders a slice of pizza and a soda, and that cost TEN DOLLARS!!! The music, which used to be great and modern, was some underground slow mopey garbage. We never even heard of most of the singers in the videos. We recognized one artist, KT Tunstall, that’s it. The manager and the other guy behind the counter were as nice as could be, and the manager almost didn’t know who we were talking about when we told him what happened with the other guy. This whole night was for my sister’s birthday, and it was just horrible. THE ONE GUY ON THE STAFF IS BEYOND RUDE, THE FOOD IS WAY OVER PRICED, THE MUSIC WAS RIDICULOUSLY TERRIBLE FOR A SATURDAY NITE OF “EXTREME BOWLING”, ETC. THIS NIGHT EXPLAINS WHY THE PARKING LOT WAS SO EMPTY! I’LL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN, ESPECIALLY WITH BOWLER CITY NEARBY!!!!

I bowl HS league there and we never get fresh oil. Maybe will be better this coming yr. Never oil anytime for open bowling so its a waste of time to practice there. Overpriced food and bowling. Every hour of the day doesnt have to be disco bowling. If u r actually serious about bowling dont go here unless ur league here gets oil..

This place s*cks. It has to easy a shot and you have all these house bowlers averaging 230 who think they know what they are doing. when they go to a real house like bowler city all they do is wine on how hard a shot it is. the food also s*cks and bar is overpriced.

AMF should wake up and place real BOWLING PEOPLE in their centers. I remember a few years ago that there was a group of employees that really started to make things happen there. I bowled in 3 leagues and also used to go there for the Rock and Bowl that had a guy who ran Karaoke. I would come with a group of 10 or more and we had a ball. He sang and got people to sing, and ran contests, it was something we looked forward to. Then all of a sudden he was gone, then the people who cared were gone and then things were not so great at this house. And so the cycle continues…this manager is not from our area and she really is just going through the phases. I too asked for a certain set of lanes and it was the manager that turned to me and said Maam, you get what we give you!..I mean, there were people bowling on the end 4 lanes and all I wanted was a set of lanes between them and my party of 8. We were placed next to some kids who were just chucking the ball and when we asked to be moved we were informed that it wasnt possible to do. We ended the game, our first game, and then left. It was then, and only then that the manager showed some interest. Like I said earlier……each year AMF management gets worse and worse. I will be looking into other lanes, even if I have to drive out of Wallington to bowl. Its such a shame…

I’ve bowled in this place once (7/7/06). I was there to try out my new bowling ball which I bought and had drilled there (outstanding service from the pro shop there). I was not so impressed by the staff, however. First, they did not give me a lane in the area where I requested (where it was brightly lit, and some bowlers were practicing – there are three sets of lanes in this center), then they assigned me to a lane where all the parties were being held, then they turned off the lights for “Xtreme Bowling” (where they use fluorescent pins and crank up the music to a deafening volume), then they assign a group of people who know nothing about bowling etiquette (they start their approach while I am just about to start mine) to the lane next to mine. Try hitting the (almost invisible) arrows under those conditions.
Finally, after one terrible game, I asked the resident pro, Randy, to assist me in getting a lane in the other side of the center. When checking out, I asked why I wasn’t assigned a lane there in the first place, and was told that “we try to keep everyone together.”
On the other hand, I did not experience any breakdown in the facilities as related elsewhere in this forum. The service could be better, though. I’d rate this place a 3 out of 5.

Worst bowling alley we ever went to. Incompetent managment.
When we first came to the place we asked if we will have to pay for my 3 years old daughter , and we were told that we have to pay only for shoes rental. After first round our lane was blocked because of some birthday party (which we were not informed of). Finaly after complaining that we did not come here for 45 min. we got another lane.(which broke 3 times). When we went to pay we were charged for my 3 year old too. Manager was wery rude (she was the one that told us she can play for free). When I remainded her that before we started I asked her about free playing she responded “I must of misunderstood you”. We payed for the game after all. I would never go back to that place again, and I do not recomend it to anyone.

I have been bowling in this house for the last 15 years and it has got worse and worse every year. They dumped a lot of money into dressing the place up but the machinery has been nothing trouble. The league I’m in is constantly shifting to different lanes because the keep breaking down. They have a staff of people that really have no idea on how to repair the equipment. We keep losing teams each year on our league mainly because of the conditions of the lanes and the faulty equipment. They just don’t seem to care there what so ever.

Went to this place on a recommedation from another center in Clifton NJ. Needed to buy new ball & get it drilled. Waited 10 min before I could find anyone to tell me when drill shop was open. No hours posted. It’s stuck in a corner somewhere. Couple of young guys run it but are never there! Price for plug & redrill expensive too!-$70 Went to Metro bowl instead! Oh- the lanes are OK But the people running things are rude. If I needed abuse I could call the phone company. John

Please tell me why bigger is better. This center is an example of why Corperate America needs a slap, and I suspect this center is up for one-nobody at the front desk when I got there, nobody to pin chase, nobody to attend the proshop(do they even have one? I couldn’t find it)Nobody could tell me for sure when the pro shop was open- or when I could book a birthday party for my son or what time it was.
Now the good news! Lanes are good, snackbar is good, & restrooms are good! Bar seems to ration alcohol(a shortage I suspect). Everything is Expensive! No posted specials- I think they make it up as they go along. All and all a 2.5 out of 5.

The lanes are nice and convenient to my home. I don’t like the manager and the district manager for this house. I have had a problem with AMF at this house for some time now. The manager seems to drag his feet and not give timely answers as well as just ignoring the matter at hand. He is only still at his position because he has the district manager protecting him. They are real good friends and share in whatever booty is extracted from AMF. The district manager has an in with the pinball and vending machines and shares his cut with the manager. He lacks the skills to deal with people and he will delegate someone else to deal with a problem. The house looks great and would be even greater if AMF just cleaned house and put people in the system who can do the job without having their full interests elsewhere.

I am a regular at Fairlawn Brunswick Lanes & I absolutely love it. The staff is great, manager is awesome, lanes are clean, food is tasty, drinks are priced well, and the arcade for the kids is entertaining. If you’re looking for a fun and cheap way to get out and enjoy the day off or weekend out, this is the place. I enjoy everything, the friendliness, the smiles and the fact that the employees remember your name!

The food is absolutely wonderful, they must have changed it because I wasn’t that crazy about it before. The employees for the most part are all very nice. I really enjoy bowling there and think it is by far the best in the area. I have talked to the nice lady I think her name is Paula, she is always nice and pleasant to talk to. For an older center, it always looks great, all the employees seem to enjoy what they are doing and I hope this place continues to take great care of us customers.

Not sure what the rave is about. Need a secured loan to buy a pizza. Manager is sweet but not knowlagable. I wonder if Brunswick gives out positive reviews to center manager’s that can’t remember to turn on the foul lights for league play. If you rent a locker make sure you get one with a key. Who’s the proshop manager? Where is the pro shop anyway? Lucy is wonderful in the bar. Nice snack bar just too pricey, and great machanical people. Lanes clean and work well. Great for parties. Who’s the best in Bergen County? Close call

A couple of weeks back, my brother and a good friend decided to try a new alley and we ended up here. The ambiance was great. Clean environment for friends and family. The only set back is lane#25, if you have a new ball (DO NOT) let the staff put you on lane#25. I sell pro balls on the side, and one was given to my brother and a friend. The ball return put two rather large gashes in brand new balls. The staff at the front desk were kind enough to have the ball repaired in a weeks time. Although the over all experience was great there, it is doubtful that I will ever get my brother or my good friend to flip there again…

This alley has gone downhill over the course of the last year or so. Employees are not knowledgeable about the alley and it’s computer systems, most nights feel like there is a day care more than adult leagues that is there, and the overall atmosphere has gotten worse due to fights and car thefts. Look Elsewhere!!

Brunswick is a great place to bowl. It’s fun for kids and adults. They have great food and good lanes. What I like the most is the prices. It’s only a dollar and 50 cents on Thursdays. That’s when i bowled seven strikes in a row. My score was a 244. But its not all great . Every lane is diffrent, They change every day. There are time where you can bowl your perfect curve but then there are times where the curve dont work because the lane is whack. The workers are great which is a plus. They’re friendly and try to help you anyway possible. Overall bruswick bowling alley in fairlawn gets my rating of an 8.

The overall appearance is very nice, ONCE you get inside. The outside looks like a old warehouse with its multi-color windows. Suprisingly, the inside was very clean and up to date. The corridor did get a bit tight once league bowling did start though. I agree with the other comment about the manager. Ethan was running around like a chicken without a head, although he was as pleasant as a rock. A place of entertainment should at least have a manager who can communicate and SMILE to its patrons. The bar and food area was nice, but small and packed to the gills. As for the lanes, in 5 games I didnt bowl less then a duece, but the shot kept on changing. For synthetic lanes the shot should not be so erratic. Take away the stiff who was managing and this is a pleasant atmosphere. Overall 4 1/2

Very Expensive-Manager needs to get …. he’s too excitable! And the help is not so helpful. Maybe they should pay them more. They say they don’t even get benefits. Brunswick needs to ask themselves if they want to stay in the bowling business. NO SIGN FOR THE REST ROOMS? Is going to the bathroom supposed to be an Easter Egg Hunt! No Proshop-not enough lockers-bar too small-Daytime front desk woman always looks confused- pin chasers always up front listening to walkman. Whew! I’m out of breath. Not so good. NJ needs better bowling lanes.

This center was a mix of old and new but in fairness is undergoing a renovation. New synthetic lanes & scorers make this center a choice for league and casual bowlers alike. Wheelchair accessibility also is a point of interest! Center Manager seemed to be a very busy & efficient person and was in control even at the very crowded time I was there. Lanes need a longer oil pattern but OK. Center was clean overall but lots of construction! Snackbar was great-very friendly woman helped me. Also a nice woman (Lucy) was in the bar which was a little too small to sit in without feeling crowded. Prices were high but there were many specials posted.I think this will be a state of the art center once they finish with all the REFURBISHING! Overall I give it a 4.

Maybe the “fat guy” he is referring to is the sloppy looking heavy set guy that has been hanging out at slocums lately. At first I thought he was a pro shop supply vendor but I think possibly he and Chip are doing some type of pro shop business together in the back. I dont know this guy’s name but i remember seeing him hang around carolier lanes many years back. Always seemed a little shady to me!

Comment Date: 12/8/2011 Name: Curious about dogs
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a fat guy behind the desk at Sloc’s. Are you sure it was somebody who works there?

Comment Date: 12/7/2011 Name: Sir Charles
Thank you for replying my friend. Ahhh, so Hiohela never reopened elsewhere. Such a darn shame! Do you happen to know if those two guys still bowl in the area? (I believe the father & son’s names were Frank and Paul) If I remember correctly, they were pretty darn good bowlers themselves. Being that I’m back in the state, I would enjoy getting a chance to say ‘hey’ to the guys.

Not only great bowling and service , the food was great too. You will NOT be disappointed. Rep2369 and gang, UR awesome!!!! Sloc’s is TOPS!

Comment Date: 11/26/2011 Name: Anonymous
I bowled at Hiohela years back as well. Sadly it closed around 2000 or so, it never moved or reopened. As you said a Quick Chek is now where it was. It’s a shame, it really was a nice little center and got a nice facelift not too long before closing. Automatic scoring and new masking units as well. Many people miss it, I know I do, but now and for many years Slocum’s is my center of choice. Easily the nicest, cleanest center around!

Comment Date: 11/17/2011 Name: Sir Charles
I just recently moved back to the area after living out in the midwest for 15 years and just happened to stumple upon Slocums Bowling Lanes. I had intended on taking my wife and kids to a bowling alley called Hiohela/Pennytown Lanes but sadly, the place is now a convenience store. Welp, I guess the good ol’ Garden State pushed another business out with it’s high taxes!
Anyhow, I was pleased to come across Slocums which was only a few miles south of Pennington. Definitely close enough for Hillsborough residents like ourselves! This place also had 12 lanes similiar to our old favorite bowling alley and I must say, it was extremely bright and clean. Great place for families. We bowled a few games with the kids, enjoyed a great lunch from their grille and of course dad had a couple cold drafts! =) I would absolutely recommend this alley to anyone looking for a nice night out with their family or group of friends. It sure is our new favorite place!
On another note, does anyone here on this board know what happened to the Hiohela Bowling Lanes? If I’m not mistaken, I believe it was owned by a father & son duo who were absolutely wonderful fellas and businessmen. They always treated us great when we went there to bowl! How long has it been a mini mart? Did they ever re-locate and open a bowling center elsewhere? It’s such a shame to see a place like that gone.

Slocums Bowl is creme of the crop!!!! a HUGE shoutout to John (aka Rep2369). he has a wealth of knowledge in keeping the machines in tiptop shape, as well as the lanes. Oil pattern just right. He , Chip (and everyone else i’m sure) are very conscientious and take great pride in their work, and providing awesome customer service. Even meticulous little details like making sure the rake cam is properly set, and what not, is what i feel makes John a perfect trainer or coach for bowling alley mechanics. If you have mechanical questions to ask him, he’s the one to ask!!! I have NEVER seen 2 year old pins (for summer use) sound and score so GOOD!!! Despite that its very small, i think the pros should seriously consider paying Slocs a visit for a tour stop!!! I’d also like to see Slocs featured in a bowling magazine on how great it is. Thanks John and Slocums staff, God bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a similar incident with that chubby guy behind the counter….we had hot dogs and pizza and went to get a soda and the dogs were gone…..

Comment Date: 5/14/2011 Name: anonymous
I was at Slocums a few weeks ago with my 8 year old son. A very nice place to bowl. It is a very clean place, and the owner is very friendly. The food is good. I had a filet sandwich. My son had a hot dog, the only problem was that the fat guy behind the counter came up and stole the hot dog when we wern’t looking and ate it. My son was devastated. Outside of that, we had a fun afternoon at Slocums.

I personally am in a league at slocums and bowl about 3 times a week. By far the best bowling center in NJ by my standards. Very clean and lanes are AMAZING. Staff is always extremely nice and prices are extremely reasonable. Next time you think about bowling think SLOCUMS!!!

Comment Date: 1/30/2010 Name: sk8ersbus1
EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!! now i wish i could do a “copy” (times it by 3) and “paste” the copy of slocums on the loyle lanes site for when they rebuild. slocums is simply marvelous!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow what can i say about this place…. by far the best bowling center in the county..place is real clean and management is great…

I have been a league bowler at Slocum’s for many years now and in my opinion, this bowling center is by far the best overall center in Mercer County.
Sure, it may be a smaller center (12 lanes) but this very well might be the CLEANEST bowling center I have ever seen and I have been in hundreds of bowling centers throughout my life and the ownership at Slocums is superb!
There are many great leagues for all types of bowlers. Whether you are a high averaged bowler looking for strong competition, a child who would like to learn the game of bowling or someone who enjoys going out once a week to compete in a league for fun, Slocums has leagues for everyone.
Along with the bowling center, Slocums has a great bar & grille which serves excellent food at great prices!

I grew up using this alley as a brunswick zone but now the prices are a bit higher and the young attendants aren’t as courteous. We called in advance to see if there were any specials and were told there weren’t, but 40 minutes after we arrived and were already bowling the alley turned in to cosmic bowling and when we asked what the event was we were informed there was a special after all

Comment Date: 3/24/2011 Name: Tracie
Oh and I love how people that have a problem with the lanes are to chicken to put there name up here. Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous.

Comment Date: 3/24/2011 Name: Tracie
The staff at this bowling alley is wonderful. KAT always makes you feel like family. The prices are great and the leagues are a blast. Love you Guys!!

Comment Date: 2/28/2011 Name: annonymous
this is the most ridiculous bowling alley ever. we got there two hours before they closed, there was one couple bowling and besides that completely dead. they debated on whether or not to let us even bowl because they wanted to close. they weren’t serving food or drinks because it was so dead. they finally decided to let us pay for one game. didn’t give us shoes, just said to go. i swear the minute the last ball hit a pin, the music turned off, lights dimmed and we were told to leave. horrible, horrible, horrible.

Comment Date: 1/31/2010 Name: sk8ersbus1
S. Morton, thats intereting about the announcement. they BETTER keep it open more than just 1 more year!! if they know whats good for em. it is clearly one of the best bowling allies in south jersey. and in fact i think it should be copied and pasted on the loyle lanes site for when they rebuild. and it undoubtedly runs circles around pike lanes for obvious reasons. if they ever did have to close i wish someone could take all the lanes, and put it in the old garden lanes building, just down the road, where the thrift shop is. make the thrift shop move to the vacant building at delsea/ grove st. that way glassboro still will have a bowling alley. and a shout-out to Kathy B at counter, very nice!!!!! the 1.49 games on weds are greatly appreciated!

Comment Date: 1/21/2010 Name: S.Morton
We were just there with 11 kids & Kathy at the counter was GREAT!!! I personally don’t think it was that much money for an afternoon of bowling.
BY THE WAY: the announcement while we were there was they are open for at least one more year. So don’t be quick to dismiss it.

Comment Date: 11/26/2009 Name: happy thanksgiving!!!
today is thanksgiving and i’m ALWAYS thankful for this bowling alley. i’m thankful that it stayed open. i’m thankful for the reasonable prices. if this place isn’t clean than i don’t know what is; very nicely kept place!!!!!!!!!!! PS: hi to Kathy (counter)

The Glassboro bowling alley doesn’t get enough credit. It’s a great place to bowl and people in there are very friendly. The prices are normal and the alley is neat and clean. It is meant for families and friends to have some fun. The Birthday parties there are always given compliments. It is open for business so stop by and see for yourself.

Comment Date: 11/13/2008 Name: They are still OPEN!!
They are still open and under contract by Playdrome. They just got their liquer license and they are picking up a bit. Prices are ok, look for coupons…..can get $1.29 games

Comment Date: 11/10/2008 Name: bus 374 driver /sk8er dude
league bowlers, are the lanes any better now then last year? i stopped by today and was quite impressed with what i saw. new synthetic lanes AND approaches. hopefully that helps solve the “not-enough-oil” problem as synthetics only use 1/3 of oil wood does. still seems to have the same brunswick zone feel to it but thats good. the brunswick zone sign is still there. No pro shop (I miss Jack slaters proshop there). the lady said the new owner ship was a division of playdrome (good). the prices are: for M-F daytime til 5 : 3.19 game, 3.59 shoe. on weds is a special til 5pm: 1.49 game, 1.29 shoe. very very nice alley!!!!!

Comment Date: 8/22/2008 Name: Glassboro Resident
It’s open, just not under the Brunswick name. Brunswick didn’t want to renew the contract.

Comment Date: 7/20/2008 Name: dan

Comment Date: 5/26/2008 Name: david
I guess the place closed in may???? NOT, Get your story straight before you run your mouth, the lease isn’t up until the end of June and it will remain a bowling alley, you moron

Comment Date: 4/7/2008 Name: if your tired of the same old !!!!
hey…we tied pike lanes down in bridgeton… older center, wood lanes, but the conditions were real nice and the cost of bowling was reasonable….I hear league play was also pretty cheap..new flat screens on for all the games..monday and wednesday $1.00 game from 7-11….check it out

Comment Date: 2/20/2008 Name: Just laughing

WOOOOOHOOOOOO at last!!! We had oil last Wednesday and 2 people shot 300 and i had my highest game ever 287. why do they wait until near the end of the fall season to put oil down????????????????? I just hope it stays the same for the beginning of next fall and stays the same all year.

Comment Date: 2/11/2007 Name: Eugene
At least you had one good night with oil we had none and they oil or try to oil or make it look they are oiling the lanes right before we bowl and i think they don’t know how to run the oil Machine right!!!!!!!

Comment Date: 1/19/2007 Name: Anonymous
So far ONE night out of the year the lanes were oiled good, the of the time rest they just s*ck.

Comment Date: 9/8/2006 Name: Eugene
Well i started to bowling again on Wednesday nights and the first night the lanes were bad and the second night the lanes were not bad for the first 2 games then after that the lanes broke down they were dry so i guess they never fixed anything that they said they did. so i would have to say i agree with you all and say the lanes are not any good for league bowlers if you are looking for a good and fun time. we lost some teams because of the lane condition last year and the year before that and i wasn’t coming back but i was told by a guy that worked there they fixed the oil machine but i guess they didn’t and unless they do before the end of the year i will not be back there to bowl again!!!!!! I guess i will be calling Brunswick headquarters again.

Comment Date: 4/28/2006 Name: Anonymous
I agree with you all,Not only does the lane’s s*ck because they don’t oil them right because i heard a guy ask one of the mechanic when was the lanes last oiled and he said last night. But now they say during league games they are not allowed to have the TV’s on. The only way the can show something is if it is one of there tapes about the lanes and the place. they are really getting out of hand now and for the money we pay them for bowling!!!!!!!!! We are thinking of going to a new place for leauge bowling becasue we heard that it is only Glassboro Brunswick that don’t oil there lanes right.

Comment Date: 4/15/2006 Name: sk8board dude
Dude that sux these lanes dont seem to meet your standards; que horror!!! I find it a shame that brunswick isnt doing as good a job as when playdrome had it . I bowled their when it was playdrome 1996-98 then it was brunswickized. last bowled there in 2002, Yes the newer computers ball returns and whatever other remodelings done in 2000 are great. But overall I like it better when it was playdrome. b/c nicer atmosphere, nicer people, and the lanes were much better scoring when it was play-drome. Que lastima!!! Pero, buena suerte chicos!!!

Comment Date: 4/7/2006 Name: Anonymous
I Agree the lanes s*ck because they don’t oil the lanes consistence one week out of 2-3 month the lanes are alright( Not good but alright for a little while maybe until the middle of second game then BAM lanes braking down) but most of the time dry to very little oil and lanes brake down quick!!!!! like at the end of first game. They need to do something quick!!! they already lost one whole league to another Bowling center and now alot of people are talking about moving our league out or they are leaving to go else where.

Comment Date: 2/1/2006 Name: Anonymous
Lanes oil s*ck if they put any at all sometimes.

To Linda,
I just saw this site and saw you responded a long time ago lol. To answer your question, Charles is my dad and Sharon is my aunt. My grandfathers name is carl(which is my name too lol). Im glad you enjoyed the place and have such great memories! I have a ton of fond memories of the place as a kid. If I had the money I think i would buy it back from the existing owners and bring it back into the family.

Plaza lanes is great. Coaches are amazing, teach kids lots of new techniques and fix any clear “bad habits” very fast. Coach Parisi is a VERY good coach, lots of good times. Bowls 300s quite frequently, maybe thats why he is such a great coach!!! I have been bowling for 3 years at Plaza, and with Coach Parisi’s help, my average for bowling went from 115 to 187. I am still learning new strategies and adjusting to new conditions. I say Madison Plaza Lanes has amazing staff and the lanes are 999999999999999x better then any other place I have been to around Union County!

Plaza Lanes WAS going down hill for a while because of the previous owner MB but now it’s back on its feet and reorganized, redecorated with an OUTSTANDING sports bar with a HUGE selection of lagers, ales, stouts, mixed drinks, etc. Good job Travis & Patty. Oh, and guess what? The AC actually works now – YIPPEE!

This is a comment to “C”. I LOVED Plaza Lanes as a teen in the ’80’s! Mostly because of the family that owned it…Charles? V.S, & his beautiful teenaged daughter Sharon V.S., whom I concidered a friend when I went there with my first boyfriend Brian. It’s not the same, but we had the one that has withstood the test of time. Hats off to the V.S. family, & thanks for the fond memories! With reverence, Linda

This alley was good 3 years ago. It took a dive. The lanes are nice, but everything else has taken a dive. VERY poor ventilation, not very clean, very poor lighting.
New owner takes over in a couple of weeks…..

I’ve been to these lanes a few times. Once I went to a friend’s birthday party here at night, the staff seems pretty lethargic but it was still lots of fun. Music wasn’t loud enough for my taste.
The other time I went there just to watch my friend’s kids bowl in a Saturday league for kids. The kids looked like they learned a lot from the coaching staff there. There had to be like a hundred kids and maybe a dozen coaches. It looked pretty organized too. Oh and my breakfast sandwich was great! Pork roll, egg and cheese.

Mouse Trap Lanes is a pretty nice bowling alley. It’s clean and aesthetically pleasing. It has a LOT of potential. It’s certainly well suited for novice, non-regular and non-serious bowlers, but unfortunately, that’s about ALL that it’s good for. I don’t recommend it for serious bowlers or anyone trying to improve his/her game.
The only reason I came was for their $2 games on Tuesdays. But it was hardly worth it. First, the place was decidedly understaffed. It literally took 5 minutes to find a worker, who was multi-tasking trying to get food ready. The counter was unmanned and there were LOTS of kids (mostly middle school age girls) on most of the lanes and hardly any adults to speak of to chaperone. They were constantly running around the place, chasing bouncy balls, wandering into other lanes, etc. It didn’t help that the alley is so small (only 12 lanes), but I understand. Nonetheless, very distracting and this behavior should not be tolerated for the sake of other bowlers. I guess traditional lane courtesy is a thing of the past with today’s younger bowlers.
The lanes were very slick and challenging, very difficult to score consistently and the pin action is nowhere near as good as it used to be here. But as a bowler, I know to take all that in stride, challenge can be a good thing, and try to work around it. I placed a small rosin pad on edge of lane just 3 ft past the line, as a technique to try to aim for 2nd arrow and hit the headpin. I’ve done it at other bowling allies without any problem. (Even pros and/or coaches may suggest this) However, I didn’t appreciate one of the staff (who obviously doesn’t understand the importance of practice in bowling) saying I couldn’t do that because it was a “tripping hazard.” Hello!!! How can it be a tripping hazard when you’re not supposed to walk on the alley anyway!! I could see if I was walking on the lanes and tracking oil on the approach (like little kids do), lofting or damaging the playing surface, or bringing in outside food/drink (which incidentally I witnessed today; a big no-no here and at most bowling allies) or did anything else inappropriate. It’s not like I used a bulky apparatus as a practice tool over the lane, for which I could see needing to ask permission. Of course it’s not much of a surprise because there never was a pro-shop there either in all the nearly 20 years it’s been open, which most “serious-bowler-friendly” bowling allies have. Sorry, but if they don’t rethink such “unintelligent” and absurd unwritten petty rules, I will NOT be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best bowling center in South Jersey. Great food and bar. The lanes are very well maintained. The staff is very courteous. If you live within a 20 miles radius, go there.
