The Bowling Alley here at Honolulu Park Place looks Great from the outside… But actually its always Breaking down, Maintenance personnel does not work during after hours when bowling alley are in high demand for a correctness… So the Security is asked to accomplish error… The Ball gets stuck with the pins and the Lane has damages… The backside of the Lane looks very nasty and should be cleaned up… The Bowling Balls are so badly damaged, Chipped and Scratched… At times when there is a call in of need of fixing… The Security has to come up and with a Nasty Look on their face and tries their best… Most of the time they will just say its Broken and Close the Bowling Lanes down.

Everything you have hear from the other commentators are TRUE… The Koi Deck on the 8th floor which you will need to get a numerical passcode to enter the glass entrance door. Has a Tiki by the Long House Side under a waterfall… Some say that its because of the Tiki… Why Tenants and guest Kill themselves in the building. A priest once told them that they needed to move the sculpture… Which the authorities in the building just ignored the priest request… After more mysterious happenings were going on… Otherwise they still go on selling Apartments to Tenant Owners and Rental guest and don’t say anything about the Tiki in the Koi Deck area

We are living in this building because of the amenities and location. The bowling alley is beautiful to look at, but rarely ever works. Don’t plan on playing an accurate game. Pins fall down for no reason and lanes constantly get stuck. We stopped bringing friends by to bowl because we feel embarrassed by the crappiness of the functionality. The bowling alley is definately deceiving to people who are wanting to become tenants or to purchase in this condominium.

Comment Date: 1/12/2007 Name: Jim
This two-lane bowling alley is nice in appearance but don’t bowl here if you don’t want to have your bowling ball damaged. The balls always get stuck so bowlers need to call security (who aren’t the happiest of people because they rather do other things) retrieved. After the 7th time a ball got stuck, we just gave up and left.

This place is totally crappy. Everything is old the workers are @$@#$*@ excuse my laguauge but it true. Workers suppose to be friendly to all the customers is always right because they get paid from customers. I for one NEVER EVER going here again until they remodeled the entire place make it a place of luxury and shape up the workers if they don’t this will be their DOWNFALL.

Went to Hilo lanes for my first time today. Met with others who meet regularly on Mondays at 1pm. Really enjoyed bowling with them, but the lanes are pretty rough; had to push reset button nearly half the times I bowled, had to get staff to help w/ lane problems about 5 times. Was cheaper than most lanes, only $3 game, shoes $2. Staff weren’t noticeably friendly, but I didn’t sense any attitude like some of these other posts. Lots of open lanes during the day, no idea about evenings.

No open bowling, cannot reserve lanes on the phone, very rude on the phone too. When you go down to reserve lanes, they cannot give them out, but next thing you see is their friends getting the open lanes. The AC is never on, it is so smelly in there with no AC and no oil on the lanes it isn’t playable. Can never get a good average and if play @ other lanes, don’t have the confidence to follow through to a high score. The owner play tennis and never did see either of them bowl? So sad, you want to practice but cannot. Can’t wait to get the other alley open up.

I love going Hilo lanes it like a hobbie of mine but it cost use a major change like fix the ceilings and get rid of the mold.Input air purifcation systems and turn the game room into a true gameroom with pool tables, foosball, air hockey, ping pong and arcade games that is a game room what they have now isn’t a game room it only a boring place. It need some major changes then i guarantee Hilo Lanes will be changed forever

For those of you who dig vintage lanes like Hilo Lanes, check out the bowling alleys in Baker City, Oregon and Joseph, Oregon. They are both major steps back in time. Love them!

I went to Hilo Lanes on Friday evening to bowl with my family. When I walked in the place was busy with a league going on. I noticed that there were some lanes available so I asked if we could bowl. The lady (who’s name I found out to be Mary or Marie) said that we could bowl but had to get off at nine (it was 8:00 when I got there)I abliged and took the lane. While getting our shoes and stuff, I overheard her talking to a guy who had a security shirt on. She said RoAnn said to stay open after the league but I ain’t staying open. Are these people trying to make money or loose money. While walking to our lanes I saw one of my friends who bowl and the stories they have about this place is unbelievable. Aparently its a FAMILY RUN business nieces, brothers, inlaws. Thats why nothing will get done. They all back each other up even if they are WRONG.

Comment Date: 3/21/2009 Name: Anonymous
Does Hilo Lanes ever have open bowling? I talked to someone who works there about open bowling and apparently they never have it! It is one of the only family oriented things to do in Hilo but if you’re not in a league you can’t bowl! They are running leagues during weeknights now and one of the leagues is about to end on Monday and when it ends they’re not even going to be open on Mondays!!

I’m not a “mainland haole” nor am I whining. But I do state a fact by saying Hilo Lanes needs some serious renovating if that’s one of the very few “fun” places for families/youth to go to in this town.

Comment Date: 12/21/2008 Name: junior K.
Hilo lanes ROCKS and the food is super ONO. What are all these mainland haoles whining about?

Comment Date: 12/6/2008 Name: hilo bowler
I agree with most of the comments here. Hilo lanes is probably one of the worst run bowling alleys I have ever bowled at. I’ve seen different managers come and go but since the Kaopuas (sp?) took over the management, it has been a downward slide.
Maybe if they invested in upgraded equipment, better A/C, and cleaned up the place, it might help, but in the end, the management and staff here are still far from satisfactory.

Comment Date: 11/6/2008 Name: Anonymous
When you step into Hilo Lanes you are entering a different culture. People have been bowling the same lanes, sitting in the same seats, and eating the same thing, for decades. Think about it like stepping into a neighborhood bar in a small town on the mainland. You go in humble, patient and observe. Things move slow at Hilo Lanes and new people throw off the staff since they expect that everyone knows what to do, already. I take my girls bowling team there and we have a great time. It would be nice if they would slap on some new paint and upgrade a bit, but its a time warp. I bowl there and I think I’m in high school again. Its not a place that you see many tourists. Tourist places s*ck up and let you act anyway you want to, because they need your money. Hilo Lanes is not one of these places. Don’t get mad when you find out the rules are different there. Be calm and smile.

Comment Date: 9/27/2008 Name: live in hilo…will be here a bit longer
1. Need to update lanes. i understand the old fashioned look is cool, but this old fashioned look is due to lack of updating, not financial strategy.
2. i agree the employees are nice, just a bit slow….i dont mind that, the smiles make up for it.
3. I have discovered that calling on the phone gets me more info than in person because i dont look local….i do mind this…its complete BS.
4. Yes this place is old as dirt and you’ll get inaccurate info in person (i.e.when open bowling begins). But, the employees are at least nice to your face and i have not dealt with anyone saying racial things to me.
5. in the end, i just wish they could update slightly and at least get rid of the Fire Alarm they have at each lane to say there is a problem (i.e. rack is stuck)

Comment Date: 9/13/2008 Name: Hilo Girl
Hilo Lanes is an awesome place! The food is great! If you tried their food and didn’t like it, it’s probably cause your not from here. Local people like local food. If you went there and was dismissed, it’s probably cause you have an attitude problem. For whoever said there’s a “gang” there, get over it, theres no such thing.

Comment Date: 9/10/2008 Name: Happy Hawn
I was at Rock n Bowl and the band was OK. The place was packed, but the service s*cked. Looks like the lady working the desk was to slow. Maybe you should have 2 people woking.

Comment Date: 8/4/2008 Name: new guy
i bowled at hilo lanes yesterday for the first time. it took a few throws to learn how to play these wooden lanes. i have nothing bad to say about this place, it was a mellow atmosphere and everyone else there was respectful to me. on the mainland i average about 250. After learning how to play on these lanes i was bowling an average at about 240. i’m new to this town, if anyone would like a good player on their team let me know. {email address deleted}

Comment Date: 7/6/2008 Name: local 808
I was at the lanes this evening and I found it stupid. The lady at the front desk was telling people about the Rock n Bowl and said you cant make resevations over the phone. Why do you have to come all the way from home 2 hours before the thing starts and make your reservation. That is so stupid. Do you know how much gas cost these days. Why should i drive from Keau only to drive home, then come back 2 hrs layda. Forget it I im not coming anymore. Its a waste of gas and my precious time.

Comment Date: 7/6/2008 Name: Disappointed
Your Rock and Bowl was okay, but the wait was to long . Isnt there someone that can move faster so we dont have to wait to get shoes and lanes. That band that was playing sounded alright, but dont they know that the 80s are over. Play some Hawaiian music. Afterall we are in Hawaii.

I was wanting to go bowling and you guys neva have lanes open. When is the best time to bowl and what day? I like now when get specials running too.

Comment Date: 6/24/2008 Name: Anonymous
I like the way the lanes
bowl. Its not often that you can find wooden lanes anymore. The synthetic lanes have a differant bounce to them and I like that the wood doesnt do that. Good job in keeping it real.

Comment Date: 6/23/2008 Name: local 808
I know that the lanes are really old. dont you think they should be updated just a little, I mean we are in the 21st century. The nostalgia look will only take you so far. By the way whos the lady that works on the weekend she has a really nice smile and so friendly.

Comment Date: 6/23/2008 Name: Anonymous
I am one who visited hilo and went to hilo lanes to bowl? I found it to be a very hard lane to bowl on but I liked the change in that. I no that it’s not that great but you can sure try to better you score over there. there are some good and bad thing’s about it but just look at it though the people who live there? they are one of the lucky’s people because they can alway’s hit the lanes with a better score then most of us who live in the mainland get the hard’s time to bowl on the lanes. the hour’s that they open are from 11:00am and I like that?

Comment Date: 6/6/2008 Name: Maui bowler
I was curious about the last post. I did some checking and found out the 808 Boyz are a recognized street gang in the state of Hawaii. If this is where they hang out on the big island, the locals wont even be safe. Unless of course they are gang members too. (Which is exactly what it sounds like. I guess the owners are either part of them or too intimidated to change things.)I think bowling in Kona would be better if you want to have a safe vacation on our islands.

Comment Date: 5/16/2008 Name: 808 boyz
There are alot of bowling places in Hawaii. If you arent from here you can still bowl in Kona cousin. This is our place. It has always been a local place for locals. Why are you bowling anyway on vacation. Go snorkleing and shopping and buy ugly shirts. This is 808 place. Just because you are here for military you are not local or 808. bowl on your base

Quote) “Please don’t leave your thousand $ here, we don’t need it. Your entitlement attitude is why we in Hilo pride ourselves on not catering to every whim of spoiled tourists like yourself. Signed, embarrassed for the Haole race”
This proves my point about this house. Haoli used to mean visitor but these guys use it as a racial term. See how they refer to it as a “Haoli race”. They treat all tourists the same, Badly. They claim ALL tourists have an entitlement attitude. Thats prejudicial. Do they feel all african americans are beneath them too. Hilo Pride is a good thing. Hilo Pride while down grading others is the same as the Klan. Dont bowl here without back up. I think I may sneak a camera in here next time and video thier Hilo Pride. Might make a good news story.

Comment Date: 4/25/2008 Name: Spc. Kinnard 25th Inf Div
I usually just bowl on Base in Oahu and have never been to Hilo Lanes or the big island. I was called a “Haoli” by the guy at the counter. He said “No Offense Haoli” I asked a local I was there with, what he meant by it and he said it was the same as the “N” word in the south. I understand local pride but this is just racism. It is below anyone I have met on the islands in the 3 years I have served here. The word may mean visitor but it is used as a racial slur in this house.

whats the hours of operation at hilo lanes

Comment Date: 9/5/2007 Name: Happy Haole
Hilo Lanes is a fine place for us locals. However as a fellow Haole I would suggest, all of you tourists to quit crying and get some skin. I have found if haoli’s come here with an attitude, they will also find one coming their way as well. If the rules of the establishment are not to your liking, or the air conditioning not cold enough, go bowl somewhere else. (Nearest lanes, Kona, where you will find plenty other haoles to bowl with) I know when I “tour” and am out and about in someone elses city I don’t expect them to cater to my every need. Please don’t leave your thousand $ here, we don’t need it. Your entitlement attitude is why we in Hilo pride ourselves on not catering to every whim of spoiled tourists like yourself.
Signed,
embarrassed for the Haole race

I know there is a certain pride attached to being a local. I agree with it. I have nothing but respect for you if you live in Hawaii. I wish I did. I also dont think you should be rude to someone just because they are on vacation and you consider them a cancer on your paradise. I (like all tourists) was treated so badly at Hilo lanes I had to leave. I was called names and snickered at by employees for crying out loud. When I go to Hilo I leave thousands of dollars in he local economy. I am always respectful and I love the hawaiian culture. Hilo Lanes is the only bad experience I have had in the state of Hawaii. I was actually told Hilo lanes was “Kapu” for “Hoalies”. I felt endangered and just left.

Comment Date: 2/16/2007 Name: Choc576
I was practically raised in Hilo Lanes and bowled there from 1960 thru 1966; then again living back home from 1994 thru 2002. I currently organize and conduct amateur bowling tournaments around the state of Arizona and live in Peoria.
It has always been a policy, for liability reasons, that children must be of a certain age to get on the lanes – if I remember correctly, it is 8 years old(?). The sign is posted at the front desk. I was and still am, surprised that very young children are allowed to bowl on the lanes here in the mainland. But, every place of business has the right to establish their own policies of how they will operate.
For the comment about “worst conditions” ever bowled on, if you check the Honor Scores Board, as of the date I left (2002) there were only about thirty 300 games shot. In the history of Hilo Lanes only a small amount of bowlers have ever averaged 200+. It is a tough house even for a regular bowler. Hilo Lanes, without intending to be, can be considered to be a “Sport Shot”. I have averaged as high as 226 in the mainland; but, never got higher than 202 but more regularly only managed in the mid-190’s. If you talk to anyone who travels away from Hilo Lanes to bowl tournaments, you will find that they more often than not, win a lot of tournaments because they find other bowling centers to have an “easy” condition to bowl in – you don’t normally have to make a 10 to 15 board adjustment when you are bowling a 3 game series.
I miss Hilo Lanes for the family atmosphere, the local grinds at the snack bar, and the challenging lane conditions.

i honestly like this bowling alley, its the only place on the east side of the island that we can go bowling, and enjoy ourselves. the workers there are really nice, and service is great. if you know what i meen its like the aloha spirt whee everyone is family. yeah our bowling alley isnt nice but at least its there for us to enjoy.

if they turned you down because your kids were too short. they had a reason to. because if your kids got hurt. you probably would have sued them. so they have a reason. & if it’s air condition you’re looking for in hilo. try the movie theater or if you want a more “hawaiian” experience. park at bay front turn the air condition up HIGH & enjoy the view 🙂

I happen to like Hilo Lanes and their uniqueness of their old fashion lanes etc. But you’d have to be quite local and experienced there to enjoy it.

We spent a few days on this lovely island to tour the Volcano. Had an extra hour to kill so we found the bowling alley. Worst lane conditions we’ve ever experienced. Had lunch @ the diner, oh my!!! The manager must also be the cook!

That second to the last day of our stay in Hilo was a very very hot day working with 3 kids. Family decided to go Hilo Lanes, their A/C was so inviting, guess what – they turned us down. No bowling for all three kids, they say they’re too short in height. I begged, the lady did not give in. P.S. Whole house was empty, I mean no one was there – only 2 workers talking stories – think they did not want the noise. P.S. Think they had 24 or 26 lanes. IIIII WASSS PISSSSED OFFFF ON THAT VERY HOT DAY. NEVER EVER EVER AM I GOING THERE AGAIN!

I see workers from the naval recycling center use this bowling facility as their “hide out” just to be away from the their bosses. It sickens me seeing slackers in this facility wasting government time and money. Management should do some actions for this issue.

Great renovations. Center very clean and modern. Seating’s are comfortable. Like the idea you can eat or drink in the pit area. Only gripe, sometimes the lanes are unplayable. Other than that, great center. Keep up the good work.

If the lanes are oiled nice, with conditions conducive for high scores, you will see thoes high games and high series rolled. But do they oil the lanes that nice only for that one league or did they start oiling the lanes nice on a regular basis after every complained the lanes being constantly dry ?

Comment Date: 8/8/2009 Name: Anonymous
A 300 was rolled on 7/29 in the Wednesday 875 Mixed Hdcp league along with numerous 700 series in the same league that evening. A 290 was rolled on 8/1 by an Eastside Junior bowler (14 year old female) during league play. Check out TV bowling at K-Bay this Sunday! Put your money where your mouth is!

Sumurai or shoud I say Bryce, you are far from being an adult. Mature minded adults don’t invite people into fighting, only kids do that crap. And you have a lot to learn life yourself. Look at yourself first before going off on me pal.

Samuri, From the comments you’ve put down, You’re th one that need to grow up. One comment or opinion about a bowling alley will not shut the place down. I’ve known Norm since 1993 and he knows his stuff and he will tell thing like it is. You’re upset that he told the truth about your house and you know it, so you start attacking him and to issue some stupid challenges such as boxing or MMA fights. So you’ve shown your maturity or should we say immaturity.

You’re wrong there Bryce, Carol would know me if she saw me. I’ll put money down on this one.

Who’s the one hiding attacking me on the K-bay forum? My Name FYI Mr. Brewster is Bryce Martinez and I’m I’ve grown up in 27 year than you did in 40. Do you realize the recoil of things you say on this forum? In how it can really hurt or even close business that other peoples family rely on working day in and day out to put food on the table for their family. with you “seemingly” silver spoon attitude can destroy? Now you think, anyone around the world can find this forum and look at it. By them reading the dumb stuff that you put sooo much effort into doing research on each alley just to find something wrong with it just to make yourself look good or feel good. BTW, Carol Furukawa has no clue who you are. Look me up you not gonna find anything special I’m nobody you really wanna talk I’m leaving for leeward bowl now I bowl at 6pm.

Comment Date: 6/19/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
To Samurai, if you’re going to launch attacks on me, Stop hiding behind the samurai nickname and start using your real name on this forum. Why can’t you use your real name ? I use mine and have nothing to hide. And besides, you’re the one that need to grow up. Like I said, if I can use my real name on this forum, you can as well pal.

Comment Date: 6/3/2009 Name: Samurai Bowler
Well, I tell you what!!! Mr. Brewster I opinionate to challenge you to a 16 game duel to bring you back to earth rather than that Mr. Brewster planet you’re on right now!!! And maybe you should grow up and rather than talk about it do SOMETHING!!! =)

Comment Date: 6/2/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
To Samurai, 1. How often do you talk to other bowlers from this house ? And 2. I’ve had a candid conversation with Art Machado, Executive Director of O.B.A. and he told me that K-Bay has went to s*** ever since he left as manager of the center, And 3. I’m entitled to my own opinion in this forum and you CAN’T stop me from expressing my views. Theats and fight challenges are NEVER a way to solve things.

Comment Date: 6/1/2009 Name: Samurai Bowler
Mr. Blunder, you know I wouldn’t mind a 16 game challenge here as well if you’re up to the task like I said Winner bowls free and is free to say what he/she likes loser pays for all 32 games and shuts up!!! =)

Fort Shafter is not completely wood lanes. They have synthetic pin decks.

Comment Date: 5/14/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
K-Bay Lanes are among the worst centers on the island of not the world. The problem here is not the lanes, it’s the manager. Debra is the wrost bowling manager on the face of the earth. The hours of K-Bay is a joke, the lane conditions are CRAP. She likes to say “K-Bay are the only wood lanes on the island”. When was the last time she found herself in Fort Shafter (wood lanes there) of Barber’s Point (wood lanes there as well). The staff of K-Bay don’t know what they’re doing as well Debra herself.

This is a small 8 lane house, like most military houses in the island, this is a clean facility. The last time I rolled there was about 6 years ago and the lanes was dry then and I hear from friends that roll there now and they say that things haven’t changed with the constant dry conditions.

Hickam Bowling Center Comments

JJ should be fired. He disrespect the customers all the time. He doesn’t care, He’s older than dirt. Cliff is a cool Jamaican guy. He adds a litle personality to the counter. ….The snack bar is good. A lot cheaper than Aiea bowl. They make decent plate lunches…. The lanes can be good at times, other times it is a nightmare to bowl on. The machines break down all the time. Beware if you use your own bowling balls, it will most likely be damaged from the machine. So bowl at your own risk. You would think that this being a military bowling center that they would have better workers to fix all the problems on the machines and scores. It’s not unusual to take longer bowling because of faulty lanes. So I would suggest you go to Schofield bowling center for troublefree bowling and no ball damage.

Comment Date: 4/13/2011 Name: Disrespected
To “Annoyed” How dare you say that “What’s worse is that 95% of the time it’s civilians” using the alley. Did you forget about the retired or those who completed their time. Did you forget about all the others who had a previous relationship with the military and are now “civilians”. How selfish you are! The bowling alley is awesome and therefore wait your turn and enjoy!

Comment Date: 1/21/2011 Name: Jon
Actually, Kathy, there are two leagues on Thursday. The first one starts at 4:00. That’s why they start rolling in at 3:00. They’re not there waiting 4 hours for their league to start.

Comment Date: 1/18/2011 Name: Kathy Glick
We are military family. We have try to come bowl at Hickam and its been several times that theres no lanes for the families. We checked their website and call ahead to make sure theres lane but when we get there we always get turn down. I mean every thursday the league doesnt start til 7 but everybody is there by 3 and 6 others lane are reserved for parties, where in there website it says parties are Fridays thru Sundays. We have come Sundays too and theres always no lanes..I mean over the phone they say theres lanes and no parties and leagues doesnt start til certain time but when we get there theres no lanes. We know several fmailies that have the same experience too. Common, a military facility should always have available lanes for the families. After all those facilities are for us.

Comment Date: 1/16/2011 Name: Annoyed
Everytime I come here I can never get a lane. There’s either a league or someone rented the whole bowling alley. What’s worse is 95% of the time it’s civilians!

Comment Date: 12/31/2010 Name: April
I go to Hickam all the time to bowl it is a clean and fun place to be. I have never had any problems with the staff or anything there. They have always been friendly to me and my boyfriend. Old saying is if you give respect and kindness you get it back ten times harder. Maybe some people should try it

Comment Date: 7/15/2009 Name: a bowler
Lanes look nice from the outside. One of the better ones on the island. They could use some new machines. There are at least one pair that breaks down a week.(that the federal gov for you)(do more with less) Lane condition always changing. Hard to maintain a high average. Thats why they lose good bowlers. Customer service is great except for an old man behind the front desk. Think his name is J.J. or something like that. Talk about an A-hole.

Comment Date: 5/14/2009 Name: Norm Hank Brewster
Hickam is a nice, clean bowling center, I’ve had no problems with the staff or the management. Mel Matsumura is a good manager but even he has a lot of crap to deal with as bowling center manager well.( Dana Spalding at Schofield, Millie Gomes at Pearl Harbor and Linda Painter of the soon-to-be-reopen Barber’s Point deal with the same mess)

Comment Date: 1/23/2009 Name: Tony Harrison
I lived on Hickam Air Force Base from 1986-91 and I enjoyed bowling on Hickam. It was a very clean bowling alley. I live in Illinois now and I wonder how much the Hickam area has changed since 1991. I bowled in Leagues in Hickam and I still do here in Illinois.

Don’t be so hard on the desk clerks. They have to deal with hundreds of customers every day…each one expecting to be treated like they’re the only one in the place.
I’ve worked in customer service before, and it’s near impossible to be smiling and cheerful all the time. Maybe you could get Mary Poppins to do the job….but then, SHE doesn’t even really exist..does she?

Comment Date: 6/12/2008 Name: ally cat..
desk counter clerks, needs a personality check, they need to show a little respect, and it won’t hurt to smile a little, it sure seems like they’re afraid to smile! hey! your face ain’t gonna crack!..sheesh, other than that hickam is a clean bowling center and the food is fantastic..so are the price range can’t beat that..

Comment Date: 4/18/2008 Name: Hickam Bottom Gunner
The clerks are rude (especially the old crusty guy), the balls do get stuck, but it is by far the cleanest bowling alley I have been to on island.
Chicken Katsu is pretty good too.

Comment Date: 1/5/2008 Name: Occasional Bowler
The clerks are rude (!) and frequently the balls get stuck behind the pins. Also, the electronic score keeper occasionally doesn’t work. Regardless of all these problems, Hickam is clean and overall the best place to bowl on Oahu (which obviously doesn’t say much for the other lanes).

I must agree with the General. The clercks are rude. The Pro-Shop does not stick to the times that thay say thay are open. Overall, if you can get past the rudeness, it is a great place to bowl.

The cleanest and most modernized bowling center on the Island. The food is fantastic, especially the fried chicken dinners. Great place to take the family.

As a member of the Armed Forces you expect that military entertainment centers are there to help you. The clerks and staff who work at the Hickam bowl are extremely rude. It upsets me that this is the type of service we can expect from MWR.

Riley of the Aiea Bowl Restaurant is one of the best service providers. He remembers frequent visitors by name and treats you as a friend.

I think people should start adding their race and the day of the week/time they went. It seems that on some nights, only orientals are catered too. On other nights, the haole haters are working. Still on other nights, the drunk/high workers are working. I want to bowl at Aiea Bowl, but I would like to go with a group (some military, some local) and I would like to be served by non-prejudiced, coherent people with good customer service. I also don’t want to smell weed or beer breath on the workers. Can someone tell me the best day/time to go if you have caucasians, blacks, non-oriental locals, and some under 18 in your group? Also, can you let me know at what point the workers go from sober to drunk/high? Would that be every night or only weekends?

Comment Date: 6/30/2011 Name: Bowler 2011
I would like to commend Riley for his outstanding customer service. Do you know that he will go out of his way to be sure you get your meal “HOT” and “FAST”. Not like those other servers that just stand aroung….Again, good job Riley…

i love to bowl and aiea bowling alley was the first bowling alley i’ve been too my whole family bowls so it runs in the bloodline

Comment Date: 1/6/2011 Name: Member of Bowling Family
I grew up in a bowling family; Aiea Bowl is the first bowling alley that I hate to enter. The atmosphere is always chaotic. I don’t see what people see in the restaurant – we have tried on three different occasions and each time the food was bad, the service was worse, and the place was like a zoo! I’ve tried their lemon crunch cake since people have raved about it. The original recipe (see What Hawaii Likes To Eat) is much better. During league play, the alley has no control over the few open lanes. Numerous times I’ve seen (during my husband’s league) non-league people completely disrupt the lanes next to them. They have no bowling etiquette. This alley s*cks!

Comment Date: 1/5/2011 Name: Friend of Aiea
I bowled at Aiea recently for the first time. I had a great experience. Lanes held up well, especially bowling in the late evening. Approach was slightly sticky, but manageable. Great crowd of people. Keep up the good work.

eh north shore idiot, you obviously are blind because my mom is not like that. oh and dont talk like that about my sister and my mom unless its to OUR face. get a grip and bowl somewhere else, dont even think about coming to leeward bowl cause they wouldnt even want you there. oh and my family wouldve done something but you never put your real name. so call my dads phone and he’ll be happy to discuss.

Comment Date: 11/8/2010 Name: Bowler
Although Aiea’s atmosphere is nice, the staffs need to improve. The deserts were ono but Leeward bowls lanes are better.

NorthShoreRegular- this isn’t MySpace, so why do u have to bad mouth someone on the internet instead of being straight up with her. Looks like someone still has some growing up to do. AIEA BOWL IS AWESOME BY THE WAY!

Comment Date: 11/5/2010 Name: KEALIIKUAMOO
THIS IS MICHELES HUSBAND KEALII.Why do you bad mouth her.I think customers now a days ask for too much some of them think the own the island rather bowling alleys.Anyway my little girl her name is tita she cries every day to go work with mommy. But check this out my number is {Sorry, no personal phone numbers – B2U Staff}.You can call me anytime my friend and I can probably help you with your problem or maybe just discuss it like human beings I don’t think that’s fair that you talk crap about someone and you know who we are and we don’t know this is….Hit me up ill be waiting for your to call thanks and ALOHA everyone.

Comment Date: 11/5/2010 Name: Kealii Kuamoo
You know what that’s my children that you are talking about and like there aren’t any other children running around and make a mess.So we all should not let any kids in the bowling alley because eventually they would make a mess too.I agree with you and the customer service she can be a little impatient, but she is really trying her best to cater and satisfy everyone’s needs.I know she deals with alot of people or customers everyday and once in awhile you’ll come across a customer that wants more than what the alley can offer and if he/she doesn’t get what they want, they will say something like “I LIKE SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER OR BOSS”.Now who thinks they own the alley, because everyone know’s the old cliche of THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.Now a days i’m not so sure about that because most of them abuse the right to be served……Meaning they think or feel that their dollar is more important than the next customer and it’s not about that, it’s about serving everyone equally and making sure customers walk out of their establishment with a big smile on their face.So in closing, i think that’s unfair that you would say something like that online about someone and someone’s kids….I feel you should confront her and let her know how she can better her PR or customer relations and as far as the kids….Well kids are kids and i know there is alot of kids that have fun up there….AIEA BOWL is a nice place for fun with the family and at night fun for you singles too. There’s alot to do there…BOWL EAT GAMES MUSIC COSMIC you name it.Thanks to greg and glen for a good job on reviving aiea bowl…I should know, grew up in that bowling alley and also wanted to thank cy too..GOOD JOB bro.

So I see here that the ‘NorthShoreRegulars’ have a problem with my Aunty, Michelle Malama. And apparently a whole bunch of people have issues with ‘Aiea Bowl. For one, if you idiots have a problem with the business take it up with management instead of talking crap on here. And who cares if you directed your comments to management, say it to their face when your bowling there. And secondly talking about my Aunty is a LOOOOOW BLOW, and quite cowardly if you ask me. If I knew who you were I would say it to your face, which is what you should do to my Aunty. You obviously can’t cause you’re either too scared, or are just two faced and like to talk behind peoples bag. And as so your comment regarding my cousins being there, do they bother you? Do they talk to you and annoy you? Do they bother you in any way at all besides the fact that they’re hanging out there? Get a life and stop running your mouths cause it WILL come back to you. As I said, say it to her face, and if you got a problem with her kids why don’t you babysit them? And if in the end you can’t cope with your issues about the establishment and it’s emplyees then bowl some where else. I’m sure you won’t forget how to talk crap behind other peoples backs.

Comment Date: 11/5/2010 Name: relle
Aiea bowl is a great place! My mom, michele Malama, works.very hard. so if you’re going to say negative things about her, keep it to yourself or talk to her like a normal adult. why don’t yu go bowl somewhere else as a matter of fact.

Not sure if bowler808 got the name right because the michele malama I have seen working there doesn’t deserve a raise at all. She acts like she owns the place and has HORRIBLE customer service. Though maybe if she got a raise she could afford a babysitter instead of letting her kids run around making a mess and bothering the customers.

She got problems with women who looks better than her because she’s fat and ugly. The alley has been so much serene without you there, Cy…………… The alley needs to be careful with all the school kids hanging aroung. They accumulate in the bathroom. Smells like pakalolo from the boys and girls bathrooms. Someone needs to check.

I love Aiea Bowl! The first time I went was a birthday party for my friends’ son and it was great! Our party host (can’t remember her name, she was haoli though), was very attentive. Made sure the kids had fun, always asked if we needed anything, and then when we asked about other events there she told us about all the events like Thursday nights. All my girlfriends and I came back that thursday and had a blast! My friend even won a pair of Oakley sunglasses! I always check their website for new events and they clearly specify when certain events are 18 and over so I dont get why people are complaining. There are times when it’s an awesome time for family and also times when its great just for the adults to have fun and go crazy!

Food is good! I was in Hawaii for 2 weeks before my December 10 fight in Las Vegas to make weight. Pretty much everything in Aiea Bowl menu is good but I wasn’t happy on my fried noodles because it’s basically just chopped spam, green peas, and carrots with soy sauce flavor. It ain’t the Chinese style. All the fried stuff is ok but it does taste like old cooking oil, better change the deep fryer’s oil regularly. This bartender Alysha is awesome and beautiful! Great service, good customer service!

Why don’t you do it Mr. BURT Y.

With all the complaints, why don’t someone inform their management, Board of Health, or Liqour License Bureau? Actions speak louder than words! Put up or shut up!!

During my visit in Hawaii, I was told to go to Aiea Bowl and try their famous “Tasty Chicken”. It didn’t satisfy my taste buds because I can actually taste that “old cooking oil” taste and I can tell from the smell as well. The meal that I actually like is their Alley Hamburgers made with homemade hamburger patties. Their waiters and waitresses needs to learn more on customer service. I had a bad service from this waiter name “Bob” and he’s very, very rude.

I have been bowling Aiea for years now, and for the most part the changes have been good. But I do not know what the management is thinking by allowing their Thursday staff to dress up like “Street Walkers” & act so unprofessional. It really brings down the establishment and its reputation of being a place to take the family!! On the other hand, the food, bowling, decor, & other staff members are really friendly & cordial.

Comment Date: 11/17/2009 Name: Air Force Captain
I don’t know if the management do drug testing on their employees. Last week I took my family to eat dinner at their restaurant, after we finished our meal and paid our bill, we head back to our car and saw these guys wearing the Aiea bowl uniform and some of the cooks smoking marijuana at the parking lot. I’m not gonna bring my family to that place again.

Comment Date: 11/6/2009 Name: BOWLERETTE
aiea bowl is prejudice especially on wednesday nights. i have witnessed people bringing in food from the outside and cy overlooks them but when a person not on his “a” list he talks to them.. glen gum and family, marisa yamane team, kelly endo team. i believe the owners should have a talk with him. we would like to bring food in from heights drive inn or any other place but from the alley.
thank you……..

This server name Bobby is so weird and got no class. He’s flirting on me and asking for my number. I felt so uncomfortable, I paid my meal right away and left without touching my food. I went to McDonalds instead.

Comment Date: 9/28/2009 Name: BOWLER
I can not believe the new Aiea Bowl owners. You did a great job in cleaning up the alley but not the people who work for you. The kitchen help is the worse. You can smell pakalolo from the kitchen. The waitresses are too young, crouchy never smiling, no customer service. They are prejudice and only help old oriental people. That is why the locals go across the stree to Height Drive Inn. Food there is ono and affordable. Wise owners you are doomed to get busted over under age drinking and dope smoking employees.

Comment Date: 9/3/2009 Name: Big Wayne
Half of all the workers in Aiea bowl even the cooks do drugs. There are nights where you can smell the secondhand marijuana in their work area. I guess that’s reason why the food is so addicting to eat.

WTF happened to Aiea Bowl…where families use to be able to enjoy???????

Comment Date: 7/24/2009 Name: Sheila
Hey Cy
What’s with the air conditioning? You said it would be repaired in 3 weeks. That was a month ago. I bowl the 2nd shift and it is too hot and the lanes are horrible…..You should try bowling under those conditions…..It is horrible.

Comment Date: 7/22/2009 Name: surfah
Where is Mako Kobayashi? He had class. Cy the manager is a joke….He does not know what he is doing and he RUDE. When you ask a question he ignores you.
How about the air conditioning….Open the doors. You dont have enough fans and the ones you do I have a facing to the ceiling. That is stupid. Dah!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Robert should get fired outta that restaurant. No class, no good customer service, disrespecting our military, and no respect to his fellow employees. I agree on Jerry, the food is great but It will be much great if they get rid of Robert too!

Comment Date: 7/9/2009 Name: Jerry S.
We had horrible service by our waiter, Robert, the other day. He obviously over extended himself. He does not seem to be sincerely friendly either. Despite the bad waiter, the food was very good. We will go back when that waiter is gone.

I have also witnessed underaged drinking and drunk employees on Thursday nights. It’s a circus on Thursdays.

Comment Date: 6/22/2009 Name: bowler
Aiea Bowl is bogus….They make an annoucement about no outside food but do they check the tables. NO……………We witnessed two tables with outside food…Darla Horiuchi’s team AGAIN..and Gary, employee of Aiea Bowl, team. Again is it because they are Oriental that it is allowed??????????????
We also witnessed under age children drinking beer. I think it is about time that we call in the Health Department and Liquor Commission Department……………..

Comment Date: 6/15/2009 Name: Anonymous
I used to be a hardworking dishwasher. I quit because they didn’t feed me hamburger patties. One night I asked for patties, but instead they threw it away. I left the kitchen, went home and cried all night. Thank you Aiea Bowl, you guys owe me a lot of hamburger patties! =(

Comment Date: 6/10/2009 Name: Guess
Why is that only people like Kelly Endo’s team can eat outside food? No one stops them. That is so unfair…..Prejudice runs rampant in the Alley………………..+

Aiea Bowl is a nice, clean house. It’s been a couple of years since Glenn had the place renovated. I briefly spoke with Glenn and he says that they are still working on the house. You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at the place that they still have work to do. And as far as The Alley Restaurant, you would be very hard pressed to find a bowling center with food anywhere near as good as The Alley. Fine dining quality at a very reasonable price.(I had the Alley mixed plate of hamburger plate and tasty chicken, I was expecting a nice, quality meal. What I ended up getting was much better than I expected.) And not to mention, the staff of Aiea Bowl is a good one, I’ve had no problems with them at all.

Last night a group of bowlers witnessed a bowling team eating plate lunches from Heights Drive Inn while bowling. Aiea Bowling Alley staff person, Gary, saw the same thing and did nothing. We were in the bar and noticed that Aiea Bowl does not jump when it is a bunch of Oriental people, but; if it is another nationality they are told to leave the premise or throw the food away. Another team was seen eating chips and goodies that was purchased outside of the Alley. Yet the bowling alley does nothing to them. Aiea Bowling Alley is PREJUDICED. WHY when our money is green just like the Orientals.

Comment Date: 5/16/2009 Name: Anonymous
It’s funny C YAMAMOTO, because I went there on Thursday night this past week, and it was open to the 18 and over crowd. Granted that those people ages 18-20 have to pay a cover charge, it’s not 21+ only like you said.

Comment Date: 5/14/2009 Name: C. Yamamoto
Thanks for your response, but my family and I will wait for the bowling alley in Kahala to open up. As for my children, they are 17 and 19 years of age, which is certainly old enough to be out at 10p.m. with their parents.

Comment Date: 5/10/2009 Name: Anonymous
To C. Yamamoto, why would you bring out your kids to bowl on a Thursday, a SCHOOL NIGHT?! That’ just plain retarded. I believe Aiea Bowl is right when they say it’s a NEW EXPERIENCE IN ENTERTAINMENT. I love the nightlife atmosphere on cosmic bowling nights. To anyone who thinks otherwise, speak up and voice your opinion. I’d love to hear it.

Comment Date: 5/4/2009 Name: anonymous
aiea bowl is a good family place.. people are complaining on about thursday nights being like a gentalmens club, but its not. it just has more of a club scene. so dont bring your kiddies.. plus you shouldnt be bringing your kids out that late at night on a school day anyways. if you like cosmic bowling go on friday or saturday night. and no comment about the bartenders! but i must say the bartender Dee is the best! and that local looking cocktail waitress is really friendly and cute unlike the others.

Comment Date: 5/4/2009 Name: C. Yamamoto
I was so excited to go to Aiea Bowl when I heard the owner on KHON say they renovated and offered cosmic bowling for family fun. I was shocked when my family and I was turned away because they were not letting anyone under 21 in on Thursdays. As a matter of fact, the girls that was in the doorway was dressed like hookers. I thought bowling alleys was about family fun??? I will definitely tell my friends NEVER to go to Aiea Bowl!!!

I love Aiea Bowl. I have fun every time my family and I go there on the weekends. Everyone is nice, including the restaurant and bar workers. I know times are hard with businesses, but I hope they are not changing their family friendly atmosphere. We enjoy having a place both children and adults can have fun!

Comment Date: 2/18/2009 Name: Lee Yamaguchi
I will never go to Aiea to bowl again. I thought it would be fun to go on a Thursday, because girls bowl free. I didn’t know it was a strip club now. All of the workers were drunk off their butts! What happened to the good family place????

Comment Date: 1/29/2009 Name: Joe Bello
I had the worst experience at Aiea Bowling Alley. The manager Cy is the most rudest and stupid person. He does not know his job. He should have learned from Mako. Mako knew how to run a bowling alley. In addition, that girl that follows Cy around is nosey and a pest. She is not an employee. What kind of business allows that type of behavior. She is just not right. The owner needs to give Cy a talking to. As for Denise she is the BEST bartender in Aiea. That girl that works when Denise is not there is ANTI local………………She only likes ORIENTALS. Why?????

Comment Date: 11/29/2008 Name: Anonymous
I saw a person today accidentally open the side door which was used for several weeks as the only entrance. When the alarm went off. He quickly apologized to the staff person with the key. When the patron admitted they just realized the exit was re-marked as emergency only, the staff person said sarcastically “No, obviously you don’t know. That’s why you set off the alarm.” Extremely rude and unprofessional. In this economy, this guy and your management better think twice about how you treat the customers that keep you in business.

Comment Date: 9/10/2008 Name: Kathy Gorman
I went to Aeia Bowl last night and the Japanese girl serving at the bar was as mean as they come. She was not nice at all. I would rather stick to bowling on base, where we are not treated like second class citizens.

We love the renovations. The pro shop is a plus to all bowlers. But the restaurants prices are too high. For just a soda it is $2.00. French Fries is over $2.00. That’s why most of us students go to McDonalds down stairs. It is cheaper..-

Aiea Bowl is my favorite place to bowl, even tho it’s infested with High Schoolers, haha. The food’s not bad but my favorite reason to bowl there is to go into the bar and get a drink from the bartender Denise and see what wacky TV show she’s tuned into.

I really like taking my kids to the bowling center at Aiea to bowl, but our dinner experience was dreadful. Our service and food was horrible. When I complained about my overcooked food to the manager he seemed oblivious to the whole matter. He obviously doesnt care about people coming back. Maybe his hair dye fried his brain. Mako should fire him!

The comments about Denise the bartender are some what true. I found when she misses her medication she loses focus and pays to much attention to the TV. We have also found she is a sweet attentive person when she is taking her meds. It is hard to live your life happy when you are born with an affliction like that. I think they are full of Aloha for hiring her. You guys at Aiea bowl are da best!

I came to Aiea Bowl many years ago to bowl a few games with my friends (about 12 of us) and to have a drink from the bar. I love the improvements to the bowling alley, restaurant, restrooms and bar. Great JOB. Can you tell me is Denise, the bartender, still there? She monopolizes the TV and if she does not know you she makes us wait a very long time. We have made complaints to the front desk. Well maybe she has changed for the better like all the other improvements. I will mention to all my other friends lets go BOWLING at AIEA…..give the Aiea another chance. We have been bowling at Hickam.

I have been bowling in a league at Aiea Bowl for the last 30 years and love the improvements. However, they need to change their staff that work the desk and the bartender, Denise. She operates the TV and me and my friends would like to watch sports but she says NO. What’s UP
