I went down a couple of times on a Sunday last year and it just didn’t have the old feel to it. It’s hard to explain. After one has been gone so long it’s hard to come back because things change and we want something that’s gone forever. I guess it’s take it or leave it. In some ways I miss the bowling, but not the hassle of trying to scrape up a team every year and some of the snobs that we bowled against each week. What to do, what to do?

Well, summer has nearly come and gone and I didn’t get down to shoot some games to see if I could rekindle the old fire. I was hoping to get back on a league this year and see if all of the comments posted here are true. Since leagues are starting soon I’m probably S.O.L. for this season unless in a month or so someone’s really desperate. I’ll try to get down and shoot a few games to come back and post a current and fair viewpoint. While I’m sure no one cared, I’ll feel better about sharing an honest opinion that’s not based on the past.

I really regret bringing up something that’s over 8 years old. While I did sub a few times last year and open bowled a couple of times, I haven’t bowled regularly for a while. If I decide to return to bowl there, I’ll give it a few weeks and then come back and post something more current. I apologize for getting everyone riled up. Everyone that reads this blog or whatever it is should just go down there and decide for themselves if that’s where they want to bowl or be entertained. No more on this issue, please.

Hey not true: I can tell you from personal experience that you have not seen the owner of Ben Lomond Lanes at Ben Lomond Lanes very much. I personally know the owner of Ben Lomond and he is very rarely, if ever there. However, he has one fantastic employee who treats and works at the center as if it’s his own and he is commonly mistaken as the owner. His name is Paul and he is the GM/Head Mechanic. Larry Moyes, who is the owner of Ben Lomond Lanes spends a lot of time at his winter home down south, so he isn’t there much.
I also know Monty personally and he really does take critisism of his facility personally. I’ve spoken to him many times and he has expressed his frustration to me, on more than one occassion, that he wishes people would come up and talk to him about their issues instead of voicing them the way they do.
Used 2 Bowl: I can guarantee you that, regardless of whether you feel like you know Monty or not enough to approach him with your issues, he will listen, and if he can change things to make them better, he will. Like I’ve said, Monty takes every issue personally and wants to see them addressed. He does care if “there is only one guy that’s unhappy.”
Besides any business owner should care if ANY of his customers are unhappy for any reason.
I’m going let Monty know of this ongoing discussion. I can GUARANTEE you he will post a response to all of this. Just be ready to voice your issues because he is going to want to know what they are. In addition to that, be prepared to offer some suggestion on how things can improve and what you’d like to see happen.
Guaranteed he will respond to your comments and try to address your issues.

I don’t see how offering an opinion (good or bad) about the center is an opinion of either Monty or his family. I don’t really know him or his family. I was merely offering some insight and my opinion. Most people don’t agree with my opinions anyway so I’m not concerned that “Whatever” or anyone else doesn’t. I didn’t feel I knew Monty well enough to go up and cry on his shoulder. Besides if there’s only one guy that’s unhappy, why should he care?

“As far as Monty is concerned, if you’re criticizing his center, you are criticizing his family. How many other centers in Utah will you see the OWNER in the building and be able to go up and speak with him? Not Ben Lomond”
Actually that’s not true. I see the owner of Ben Lomond at the alley all the time. And he’s a very personable guy.
As far as Monty taking criticism of his center as criticism of his family… well that a bit ridiculous.
That said… I like Spare Time. I’ve had a good time there on a number of occasions. And have always found the staff to be pretty friendly.

Used2Bowl, I saw some of the same things, but that was a long time ago. Things change and people change so maybe this has too. Every where you go there are cliques. There were cliques within every league and probably still are (probably that Whatever guys is in one of them). I just got worn down from having to find new bowlers every year and often they proved unreliable (not the houses’ fault). I’m like you and part of me wants to come back yet part of me feels there are a lot of the same people there that turned me off in the first place. We may just have to go give it a shot and if it doesn’t work out then at least we know. Go down to the center and see who’s bowling in what leagues and if a lot the guys we didn’t like before are gone then it’s time to come back. There will always be someone working there or in a league that we don’t like, but is it worth it to give it up?

Okay “Whatever” you probably make a valid point. I’ve never known Monty all that well and can only base my opinion on what I saw and how I felt. One incident still stands out and that deals with the new lanes installed 8 or 9 years ago and his indifference to a situation that arose. Yes, it’s old news snd doesn’t matter anymore. I’m willing to s*ck it up and give bowling a league there another try. Also, I’d like to say R.I.P to Arnold Fraga.

Especially when it came to Carl. Carl was a piece of crap and took advantage of Monty’s generosity. It was one of the best things Monty ever did in getting rid of him. One more thing I want to add. I’ve heard Monty say a million times, “Either you’re part of the problem or you’re part of the solution”. Anyone can sit back and arm chair quarterback him, but if you haven’t tried to bring your issues to him, then you’re no better than those who have tried to take advantage of him. Before you go posting negative comments about ANYTHING, try taking some initiative to bring your issues to the attention of those who can make things right. So here’s my challenge to you, go visit the place, take note of how things have change and if you have problems, let Monty know. I can almost guarantee you, you’ll get more than you ever thought.

Comment Date: 2/2/2011 Name: Whatever
Besides, how many other people do you know would FIRE friends who work in their business because they’ve learned their friends aren’t taking care of things. Monty has lost a lot of “friends” to do what’s in the best interest of the business.

Used 2 Bowl: It’s obvious that you haven’t been in for a long time. Big Al, Rick Moore and this click you refer to no longer even go in this center. I have known Monty for years, even before he and his family bought this center from the Fitzgeralds family. I can tell you this, it became obvious to Monty who really cared about his center and who really cared about what they could get from him and his center. When Monty cut them off, they quit coming around. Monty and his family has worked really hard to improve things at this center, to the point that they have almost lost everything. Monty has taken a bad rap from the actions of other people, but I for one will stand up and defend him. He listens to what people say and takes criticism of his center very personally. As far as Monty is concerned, if you’re criticizing his center, you are criticizing his family. How many other centers in Utah will you see the OWNER in the building and be able to go up and speak with him? Not Ben Lomond, Not Davis, Not any other center that I’m aware of. If you haven’t approched Monty and told him of your issues, then you have no one to blame but yourself, because he will listen and try to learn from your issues. Your choice.

When it was Fitzgerald’s everyone from the desk clerk to Gordon and Joanne made you feel welcome and part of something everytime you came in. After it became Sparetime I didn’t get that feeling anymore. Unless you were Big Al, Carl, Rick Moore, or one of those guys no one seemed to want to talk to you. So Sparetime, can you convince me this has changed and make me want to come back and bowl here again after an 8 year absence?

Comment Date: 1/21/2011 Name: Used 2 Bowl
It’s been a few years since I bowled regularly at this place. I felt it was just a click for Monty’s friends and no one else. I’ve been there a couple times in the last couple years and they act like they could care less if I was there or not. Maybe I took it too personal, but it makes it hard to come back and bowl when you know the people there don’t give a rat’s a**.

I have to disagree with “Agrees with Richard” They got rid of all the lazy a**ed no good employees who got paid to sit around and do nothing except sit in the smoke room or go outside and smoke. They even got rid of one employee who was too busy getting drunk on the job to do his job. The owners have done a great job replacing all the dead beat employees with employees who care and give great customer service. As far as the pinsetters, they have been completely refurbished, along with brand new lanes, automatic bumpers, new scoring, new seating, new masking units, new snack bar, new bowling balls and bowling shoes. The owners have put more money into this center than any other center around. If you don’t like it there go somewhere else!

They have not replaced every piece of equipment in the place. They still have the same stinking piece of crap pin setters that were there when it was FAB Bowl. Richard was pushed out of the place just like all the previous employees when it was fitzgeralds. In my opinion they got rid of every good employee that ever worked there.

Comment Date: 5/3/2010 Name: Realist
Richard is a {deleted}. He has no idea what he’s talking about and probably got fired from this great facility for being drunk while working and making an a** of himself.

Comment Date: 5/3/2010 Name: Up yours Richard
The owners have totally remodeled this center inside and out. The owners have replaced every piece of equipment inside the center since they bought it. Richard obviously has no idea what a serious bowler is looking for. I’d have to agree with the previous post. Richard is probably just a pissed off former employee.

As far as a bowling alley, it s*cks. Customer service has gone down hill over the years, Not a place for the serious bowler. One of the worst centers I have ever bowled at. Place is falling apart & doesn’t look like the owners want to put any money into it. As far as a place to have a little child like fun, it is mediocre at best.

Sparetime Family Fun Center is an awesome place to bring your family and friends. Well maintained lanes. Great fun. The center is very clean, with employees that understand how to take care of bowlers.

We love Sparetime. They don’t charge for bumpers for the kids and it is always easy to find the right size of ball because each size has a different color. Definately a great family bowling center. Friendly staff, great music.

This center far exceded my expectations. The staff were very knowledgeable, and friendly. They also have the best music I’ve ever heard in a Bowling Center. Took all my requests and some internet DJ played all my songs for me! Great Time!

What a great family entertainment facility. The whole place has been remodeled inside and out. The glow in the dark mini golf is really awesome and the batting cages are really fun. The staff really strives to make sure that everyone has fun and they are serviced well. I would recommend this place to anyone. By far the best bowling center in the state of Utah.

The staff at Sparetime is the best around. The facility has been completely remodeled inside and out and they offer great programs for all ages. There is something there for everyone to do and the galactic miniature golf is a must see! All I can say is “WOW, what a great place!”

Great facility. Superior customer service. The inside of the center is completely remodeled and is very clean. Fantastic billiards room and game room. The coolest Galactic Bowling Experience in the Ogden area. Well worth the extra $.50 cents per game that you will pay.

Nice Center… Best lanes around. Wouldn’t know it by looking at the outside. Prices way too high and still rising!!!
