Closed for good; will become a synagogue with 125 condos.

Maple Lanes is now closed. The same family created and maintained a good, solid, customer-first business for 53 years. This is America; this family worked hard, loved the place, treated their customers and employees well….and now it’s time to say goodbye. End of story.

Maple Lanes Rest in Peace. I know that this place was a dump but the only reason I wish they would stay open was to keep the other bowling alleys in Brooklyn from over crowding. Melody and Shell Lanes will not be equipped in handling Maple Lanes Trash. Thank God I am bowling in Queens next year.

Comment Date: 1/25/2013 Name: TOM
To Joe S. I could agree that Shell Lanes needs some renovations but its an old school bowling alley with fun cool staff and customers. However I wonder what the real reason Maple Lanes is going out of business! See you have an owner who only cares about the bottom line. He cares about little else. To respond to you one I am not involved in ownership of Shell Lanes, two I only state facts like the past fighting, drugs etc, three I can’t comment on the current state of Maple Lanes because I am not there. Four a few of my sources used to bowl in your league and you know who they are. Five you said the white trash thing, not me. Six I was not picked on in high school. Seven I am not hear posting on this website to promote myself or to give myself false power. Eight and final my some of my comments were directed to your league and other leagues there too. With that see you around sometime before Maple Closes. I might make one last visit there with my entrouage.

I am not a Maple Lanes Bowler but I have bowled at 2 Alleys that closed and not on good terms by the owners. Mr. LaSpina should have the bowlers in mind not his pockets. Greed is still good in NYC and in life for people like him. Harlem Lanes closed also. Woodhaven and Van Wyck before that. Who will be next until Bowling doesn’t exist in NYC?

Comment Date: 9/12/2012 Name: betrayed
Well played, Mr. LaSpina, waiting until all fall leagues started before sending out the notice of imminent closure to your loyal customers. Was it because you’re taking one last opportunity to squeeze every dime out of the people who lined your pockets for the past 30 years? Or did it take you all week to come down off your painkiller addiction long enough to articulate your thoughts?
Maple’s bowlers are a family. While it was within your rights to sell that property, it was not your right to destroy this family. Enjoy your money.

To tom- it was not my intention to personally attack you in my last post. That is not my style nor do i think it can accomplish anything positive. I just cannot for the life of me understand what would make you post comments about my leagues as such. You indicate that you post facts, and , I agree that some of the things you post are in fact factual. Regards to my leagues and those people- you are wrong. What particular individuals or incidents are your commenting on? No matter, I hope you dont take the previous post personal, I could have went a bit overboard. Maybe you didnt get picked on in HS lol. Consider this an olive branch- that drink offer is still on the table should you want to drop by.

Comment Date: 8/16/2012 Name: Joe S.
Tom, i havnt ventured on to this web board for a while but again someone had mentioned you had submitted a response several months ago. Again, I think your comments are a little harsh especially when you stated “i should know the definition of white trash very well”. I am not sure if that was a shot at me- to which i would have to laugh- as we have never personally met nor are you aware of my personal and professional accolades. If you are interested we could go into them, lord knows i love to toot my own horn.
With that said, I can agree with you that maple does need to put some money back into the business. It is showing signs of wear and tear. With regards to what you seem to identify as your personal diety, shell lanes: I was there recently with some friends and I have to say that it was very disappointing to say the least. I saw nothing there that I could not find a maple lanes. That in itself indicates the sad state of affairs that has become brooklyn bowling. Both houses need major upgrades- maple needs new pin setters etc, and shell is in dire need of a full renovation of its snack bar(it has been the same since the late 80s if not longer). These facts i concede and agree that your comments are close to the mark. With that, it seems inappropriate that you would continue to call my bowlers white trash etc. I am not the type of person that looks to propagate hate on web boards and look for meaningless arguments. Your comments are uncalled for and unfounded. Many of those people are my friends if not my family. You seem to be either slow witted or self loathed. Perhaps you own Shell and this is a way to promote your business over the competition. I went back and read your comments and you seem to be a telephone tough guy who has nothing better to do then rip other people. I dont know if you were the guy that got picked on in highschool or that socially inept person who couldnt get a date but perhaps you should keep your comments to yourself. No one care what you say. This website gives you some sense of power, false power. This will be my final response on this board as I grow tired of your insulance. Please stop calling my friends white trash especially when you have not met them. Again I urge you to come down and meet these people. Perhaps you are mistaken.

To Paul: Many people have valued what I have to say. I have many things to do including telling the truth about Maple Lanes. You don’t realize but I state facts. I don’t have to make up stuff. Just look at many of the other negative comments from others. Shell Lanes is not a hole. You probably live in that dumpster called Maple Lanes. You don’t have to care what I say and I am not going away like you want me to anytime soon. Finally everyone cares about me and nobody cares about you.

Comment Date: 5/21/2012 Name: Paul
Well its seems like you have nothing better to do than bash Maple lanes. Tom I said it before and I’ll say it again you’re just a bitter old man who looks to start trouble and cause controversy on this site. Once again just go back into your hole (Shell Lanes)and shut your trap. No one cares what you have to say, no one cares about your opinions, and mostly no one cares about you. just bowl and shut up we dont care what you say in fact do us all a favor and just disappear into your own miseralbe life.

See I am not the only one who has issues with Maple Lanes. Just look at Pissed Off Customer, Easter Bunny and the Bowler who bowled at 200 bolwing alleys. Its starts with bad customer service ie not fixing pin setters, and not caring about the league bowler needs to managers like Donnie picking fights with customers. It seems to me that nothing has changed in Maple Lanes since the early 2000’s and beyond. Last time there was 2004. Next time there no time soon. If ever.

I love comming to Maple Lanes to bowl the front desk works very hard to please there customers bartenders are friendly and always give u quick service food service is ok mechinecs r never in the back in case of a breakdown and on sat nites late u can always see the staff and the manager bowling i think this is wrong they should be there for the customers and security makes u feel secure they r always making there rounds and making sure all is well

Comment Date: 1/11/2012 Name: The bowler who has been to 200 bowling alleys !!!
I have bowled in hundreds of bowling alleys from N.Y. to Vegas and never have I seen a worse system for lane service. The intercoms don’t work,it takes 20 minutes for a mechanic to get to your lane and nobody really cares. If the manager can’t get the mechanic to stay behind the pinsetters, then get a new mechanic, if that don’t work get a new manager. We are tired of hearing he was on the other side,, you are supposed to have a mechanic on both sides,,but to the management of Maple Lanes the Cosmic BS is more important than the every week league bowlers cause they know they get our money whether we get service or not. Pins sit in the gutters all nite long and your mechanics don’t even know it’s thier job to remove them without being asked. Please don’t say that happens in every bowling alley,,BECAUSE IT DON’T ,95% OF BOWLING ALLEYS HAVE A MECHANIC BEHIND THE PINSETTERS and will listen to the criticism of thier league bowlers and take action, but not MAPLE LANES, over there nothing changes, every week same bs. You don’t have to print this, cause I know the truth hurts!!!

Comment Date: 1/11/2012 Name: Easter Bunny
There needs to be better service of the lane breakdowns. Mechanics are no where to be found, they are not proactive in keeping things neat.

Maple lanes is usually a very nice place to go to. However the manager Donnie is a complete lowlife {deleted} who doesn’t know how to treat his customers. We went bowling and our lane was having problems like reseting on it’s own constantly, not keeping the score properly, and being out of sequence on it’s own. We paid over a hundred dollars for 11 people to bowl and the lane kept giving us problems. We went to speak to Donnie and he says that it’s our fault and that hes been watching us the whole time and that there is nothing wrong with the lane and that we the bowlers are messing it up. All we asked was to let us start the game over again due to the problems it was causing Donnie was very rude and disrespectful and racist. He even said he singled us out from the beginning and that there was no problem when clearly the lane was malfunctioning. We spent our money there and got {deleted} customer service from a rude {deleted} of a manager named Donnie. I’ve been coming to maple for years and have had no problems but that night Donnie really acted like a complete {deleted} and I’m not going to maple ever again and I will tell all of my contacts to never bowl there again. Donnie is a complete jerk {deleted} and needs to learn how to treat his customers.

I am back to respond to Paul and Joe S.
Paul- It seems to me that you have no life. You came down to my house and had to ask about me. One you don’t know me. The Shell Staff knows me only as a league bowler who has been there for a long time. I am not the garbage that I described there. You probably don’t even know what league I bowl at in Shell Lanes. Shell lanes is a nice gymasium and rarely has any problems. Everyone gets along. Thus no reason to fight there. Trashy people and low lifes I will fight with. Maple in the past had plenty of them.
Now on to Joe S. Its nice to see that your Bowl USA league cleaned up its act somewhat. I have stated that in some of my past comments if you read them. I did give you some credit but there is still work to be done. Before you there were a lot of problem people, low lifes and garbage hanging out there. I state facts. I have nothing to hide. The garbage commet I made about your bolwers I stand by till I see otherwise. Sorry I have no plans to visit and teach you what trashy people are. I think you know that definition very well. I have better things to fry on Thursday night for now. Oh by the way how is the local drug pusher who tried to push coke on my little cousin years ago. I heard he is back. Your leagues might have a little better people but the place is still a junk hole.

Comment Date: 8/24/2011 Name: Joe S
Tom, it was recently brought to my attention that my BOWL USA leagues have become a topic of conversation and you had some negative comments related to my leagues. I am the secretary for all BOWL USA brands and have worked very hard to make all BOWL USA premier fun leagues in Brooklyn. Perhaps you need to read up as BOWL USA was sighted in several local papers as the top fun league in brooklyn. I am not sure if you are overly proud of your own house, totally misinformed or looking to start problems etc. This garbage comment you made about my bowlers will not be tolerated. I would like to invite you to come down and join one of our leagues and explain to all of us what exactly qualifies us as trash. Come fall we are there tuesday and thursday at 630. Drinks are on me.

Comment Date: 8/23/2011 Name: Paul
Well I had chose to ignore you since your last post but I decided you needed a reality check yourself, I went to Shell the so called nice place to bowl. I also inquired about you from what I’m told you were banned from Maple for things you state happen there so I guess your the garbadge you were describing. So stay at the gymnasium you call a bowling alley and have a nice day Tommy boy!

Comment Date: 4/15/2011 Name: TOM
This comment is for Paul on 3/28/11. One I am not a bitter old man. I am in my mid 30’s and two I will express facts anytime I feel the need to. Good to see that you are not anonyomous anymore. I don’t have to hide. Fact is that Maple Lanes is still the Mecca of Garbabe of Brooklyn since the early 2000’s and before that probably and I know from my friends who bowled there before they left too that nothing has changed. There are still fights mabye not every week but it still happens. Last Thursday at the late league there was a big fight and we heard all about it at Shell Lanes the next night. From what I understand the local drug dealer has returned. Police have moved on to other things for now. The staff covers for this guy and I know it. In fact I beleive they get a cut of the cash too. The dealer is usually there at night. Also the staff is rude and doesn’t know how to handle a crowd. Summary Maple Lanes only carea about your money. I choose to spend my money at civilized bowling alleys like Shell Lanes. Maple needs me but I don’t need you. In fact the keep sending me the league flier every year. I just laugh at it. Garbage attracts garbage and little to nothing has changed and you know it Paul.

Comment Date: 3/28/2011 Name: Paul

This message is for Anonymous: Good to see that you have noticed my remarks since 2007. If anonymous has been at Maple Lanes for years now he might know me. I use my real name. Who is Anonymous? Who knows? Who Cares? I speak facts. This house doesn’t need my money. I choose to spend it elsewhere. Maple needs a reality check with new ownership who will throw out the trash like you. My sources are still very good and I know they are. I don’t bring negative enegry. Its already there. I know trash when I see it. I am not completley negative. I did say that Mabye Joe S runs Bowling USA better now but we all know know that the local drug dealer will be back as soon as the police find something beter to do elsewhere. We all know that the drama and fighing will be returning to Maple soon. I still stand on my comments that Maple is the Mecca of Garbage and Other Bowling alleys in Brooklyn (Shell/Melody) Rule. Historically Maple Lanes has been known for fighting and other nonsense. I am not a bitter old man. That is probably you Anonymous. This dump is still trying to recruit me to bowl there and the last league that I bowled there was 2004. Nice to see trash grow from 6 teams to 18 teams. See Trash Accumulates after a while. Summary Next Time Anonymous will use his real name like I do.

Comment Date: 3/14/2011 Name: Anonymous
This message is for TOM; I just want to say I have been at Maple Lanes for many years now, I have noticed that you posted in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and now 2011. I assume it’s all you since your diatribe of negetive remarks seem to be redundant at best. I think you are just someone who is a hater so I say to you stay the hell the home, no one at Maple needs your negetive energy at this house. In reference to Bowling USA on Tuesday and Thursday nights its the best run league in Brooklyn, no fights, no fuss, just fun every week. Joe S and his dad run this leage and no one steps out of line. If they do they are gone, this leage went from 6 teams several years ago to over 18 now on Thursday and 14 on Tuesday, they must be doing something right. Both leagues are family orientated and great fun, maybe if you werent so negetive you could join and see for yourself; however, you should stay home as you sound like a bitter old man who would just ruin the league for everyone else

John LaSpina does not own Gil Hodges Lanes, any more!

Comment Date: 2/25/2011 Name: TOM
From what I understand the local drug dealer has been finally chased out of Maple Lanes for now. He will be back as soon as the police go away. Mabye Joe S runs Bowling USA better now but its only a matter of time before drama and fighting returns to Thursday and now Bowling USA 2 on Tuesday. Last major fight was about a month ago from what I heard. Summary Maple is the Mecca of Garbabe and Other Bowling in Brooklyn (Shell/Melody Lanes) Rule. Gil Hodges is also crap because they are owned by the same people who run Maple.

Comment Date: 1/28/2011 Name: Anonymous
Maple lanes may need a little fixing up but Bowling USA on Thursday’s and now on Tuesday’s as well is the best leauge in the house they have the most fun and everyone makes money at the end of the year and the end of year bowling party is at a catering hall and its awesome. Joe runs a tight ship and nobody gets out of hand if they do they get tossed from the league. I’ve bowled in may leagues and houses and Maple Lanes and Bowling USA is the absolute best. Joe S Bowling USA leagues are the best!

Comment Date: 12/29/2010 Name: Jack
I have to say, some of the comments made here are true. Maple is a bit outdated but they have finally made some upgrades and thrown money back into the place. They would be smart to fix some of the machines as they are old. The best run leagues regarding money would be the thurday triples league in the summer as Nicole M is great. The best run fun league would have to be both bowling USA leagues. Joe S is a great secretary who makes sure that no drama unfolds as it may have in the past and all people are having fun. Maple is starting to come back to form.

the bar closes to early during the week it should stay open later so people can hang out instead of being asked to leave so the bartender can go home because she doesnt make alot more in tips at 10;30

except for a heavy set woman with blond hair she always has an attitude with the costumers at the front desk the little blond is very helpful and is always there to solve a problem this is what Maple Lanes is about family

To Disappointed: FYI-The LaSpina Family are still the owners of this & four other centers as well. I can tell you that this family cares about their business & their customers. Things are not always perfect no matter where you go. As far as rude employees at the desk go, once you are set up on your lane you don’t need to even speak to them at all. If you want to formalize your complaint, contact John or Joe LaSpina directly. There’s nothing wrong with this alley. If you don’t agree, go to an AMF house on Long Island & there you will see how rude & indifferent employees & managers can be.

Comment Date: 1/5/2009 Name: TOM
In Response to Customer and Disappointed. I agree with both of you totally. I see that Maple Lanes is totally in the toilet bowl. Its quickly becomming the Mecca of Garbabe in Brooklyn. Its good to see that people are starting to take their money eleswhere. I saw the trend in 2003 and 2004. 2009 nothing has changed.

Comment Date: 12/20/2008 Name: customer
I was at your bowling alley last night (Friday)and spent plenty of money at your bar and not recieve a buy back. Your bartender gave out plenty of buy backs to customers that she obviously knew, but they never bought or gave her money she kept saying this ones with me.I then went over to her and said I heard the next ones with you and she replied “you heard wrong”. Is your bartender only taking care of who she knows and not treating everyone equally? My money is just as green as anyone elese who walks in that bar. In any bar you go to you spend money and tip the bartender usually you recieve a buy back after the first 3 to 4 drinks. I think your bartender only saves them for who she wants so she can pocket the tip and get bigger tips for giving free drinks…I sat there for a long enough time to see what she was about. On top of mistreating customers like myself she is nasty, and very unfriendly.

Comment Date: 12/5/2008 Name: Disappointed
I went in on a Saturday night and, I’m ashamed to say, this is not the Maple Lanes I grew up in. The lanes were a mess, there was garbage everywhere, and there was no control at what we used to call the “control desk.” The manager was one of the most discourteous people I’ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with, and my scores outperformed the apparent cumulative IQ of the desk staff. The bartender apologized for the lack of interest the rest of the staff displayed in the needs of their customers, but the damage was irreversible.
The ownership, whoever it is now, should either revamp their staff or shut down, because this isn’t the same bowling Mecca that Peter LaSpina once ran.
“This is not your grandpa’s bowling alley” INDEED!!!

Comment Date: 8/20/2008 Name: TOM
To Joe. I oompletely stand by my statements and they are documented. Maple lanes has turned into moron central. Bowling USA on Thursday night in the fall/winter has the most drama. Sunday and Friday also has its share of jerks too. If I had the time my team in that league would win 1st because most of the bowlers s*ck. Its sorry that you don’t see this.

Comment Date: 8/8/2008 Name: Joe
BULL! None of your nasty comments are true.

Comment Date: 4/23/2008 Name: TOM
To Paul Thorne and Nick. I am not full of crap. These things do happen. Some jerk/aka worker tried dealing drugs to my 9-year old son. I have no ax to grind. These are documented facts. I am surprized that this place didn’t get shut down yet. Bowling USA on Thrusday night seems to be its craziest league. That league is full of jerks.

I come to Maple Lanes a few times a week. I’ve never felt a friendlier welcome than I feel at Maple… The lanes are beautiful, and though the machines are old, they’re well-maintained. The people behind the desk are pretty nice. Only complaint is the price, but it’s well worth it compared to what else is in Brooklyn. Best experience I’ve had in years cameby accident when the manager (guy in his 60’s, about 6’5 and bald) helped me with a mechanical problem. The guy fixed the lane then came back, apologized about the inconvenience, then invited me to bowl on a league. He showed a genuine interest in what I had to say and made me feel at home. They made a lifetime customer out of me.

Maple Lanes has always been the best run, most friendly bowling establishment in Brooklyn. Friendly to EVERYONE. Coming in and doing whatever you want without regard for any rules is wreckless, and dangerous, on your part.
You were wrong. Don’t cry about it. And learn how to spell.

I am new to bowling.
my first time was at maple lanes.
at the last turn of the game, i tought it would be fun to bowl two balls at once. (I now know that this is not accepted, however at the time i had NO IDEA what was permitted and what wasn’t, as there weren’t any signs with rules etc.)
right away some guy from management came up to me, along with a 7 foot tall security guard, SCREAMING at me that i do this every week (???this was my first time!!!)and that i would be kicked out and have to pay damages (even though there of course weren’t any…)then when the security guard tought i was out of earshot he said: “how come you keep letting THOSE PEOPLE back here?”
this is a racist bowling alley.
i defenitly won’t be coming back, and i’ll also let all my school friends etc. know about this and reccomend that they go somewere more tolerent.
shame on this bowling alley, it’s sopposed to be about fun, not screaming and racism
