Great! A true bowling center. Great prices on everything. Great service. Family atmosphere. New owners Scott and Teresa poddig have transformed a dying center into the only bowling place to be! Those of you who haven’t been there for years, give it a shot and you will be amazed! Staff members Elvira, Dave, Andrew, Erick, and gang are energetic, efficient, and beyond friendly. A very uplifting place. Never thought that I would write that about this place, but it is very true. You gotta see it to believe it.

When I am in the Montclair, CA area I bowl at Bowlium. Everything about this bowling center is top notch! The staff, lanes and food excellent! On Sunday’s, between 9am-12noon, you can eat breakfast and all the bowling you can get in for 3 hours for $10 including breakfast—pancakes or french toast and bacon as well as orange juice or coffee!!

This is one of the cleanest centers you’ll ever find. Friendly service and a upbeat atmosphere made our bowling experience enjoyable.

We visited Bowlium Lanes the other day for the first time in about a year. The place looks a lot better. They seem to also have more things going on as far as specials and events. They even had a DJ going on in the bar. We all had a way better time then our last visit, definitely glad we gave it another chance

This is the worst bowling alley i have ever been to. EVER. A bowling alley is supposed to be full of life and happiness but you walk in there and automatically feel depressed because it is so dead. music is quiet, it is full of cranky old people, and not to mention the new manager is a creep! I asked the staff how they liked working there and it seemed they all had a problem with management, all of them hate their job. i don’t recommend this place at all.

Just had my birthday party here and everyone that came had a blast! Drinks were a bargain and so was the bowling. Staff was very accomdating and super friendly. New owner is in the process of remodeling and upgrading entire facility. Highly recommended, had a blast!

Last Weekend:
I Went to what was Active West Bowlium Lanes Located at 4666 Holt Blvd. Montclair, CA 91763. Bowled 3 games, 210, 245, and a 164; Cost was $6.75, and included shoe rental. My review of this old classic, it has the same old fill as when I last bowled there when I was 12 years old. It is clean. The center has 32 lanes and goes under a new name of Bowlium 32 Lanes. The only bad thing to remark on is the house balls are old and need to be replaced. The Machines are old. But for the price well worth the visit. Try em Out when your bored.

This place has really good food, and the lanes are pretty nice. I like how the center is shaped, and the staff is okay there. I have been there 2 times due to bowling tourneys. The approaches are really bad there. 4 people fell, and bowled reall bad after. The worst thing about this center though is that there are 2 farms next to it, so abou 11 am the whole alley smells like manure. All of the kids that didnt make the top 5 there didnt watch the end cause everyone, the kids, the parents, my friends and I left were getting headaches from the smell. I mean the center smells pretty bad. Not a center i recommend unless you are used to the smell.

I may be living in a bubble but I actually think the place is improving. New faces, new attitudes. I understand things won’t change overnight but let’s be patient. At least the new owners care about and know about bowling.

This place is terrible! even after it is no longer Amf. The lanes keep breaking down, my bowling ball suffered lots of damages (scratches and cracks). My brand new ball had a big crack due to the broken down lanes. I had to get it repaired. I really am scared to go there now, and probably wont be going back. The staff is very friendly but it is just a terrible place to bowl at. I would not recommend going there if you have a good bowling ball.

This place was a dump before but now with new management, it’s still a dump. they say everything is improving but the lanes still spit ur ball back w/ plenty of scratches and missing pieces. They give out coupons so you can have free “gameS” but now they retrict you to only using one each time. you earn them and yet you cant use them when u want? you also cant use them when its the “peek” hours and cosmic. thats like you’re only allowed to use them during the day. People work you know? its not like everyone can go bowling everyday. This place blows. they might as well go out of business.

this center has changed for the better. There have been the improvments stated in the previous post. the managment and desk people are very friendly and i will return.

While this site is loaded with negative reviews about Bowlium, it should be noted that AMF no longer owns this bowling center. Positive changes are taking place. New lanes have already been installed, a new Pro Shop has been constructed, and, from what I understand, many other changes are coming. I’ve gone back since the ownership change and what a difference there is already. I’d recommend a return visit.

This bowling alley is the scum of the earth. I bowled a league there once and it is nasty. the bathrooms smell horribly, the lanes are sticky, the staff doesnt provide service, and the people are shady. IT is located in a part of town that you just dont feel safe in. Everytime I was leaving the bowling alley, I felt like I was going to be robbed. If you are thinking about going to this alley, take my advice and save yourself time, money, and your safety. 10-20 miles away you can go bowl at the upland alley, a much more safe, clean, and inviting place to bowl!

Why post the hours of operation on your website when they don’t mean a thing.Sometimes it closes at 9 sometimes 10 or 11 and people get kicked out before they finish their drinks.Your coffee shop closes before leagues ever finish bowling I thought the object of business was to make money? Bowling lanes need bowlers to be called a Bowling enterprise,a bar needs people drinking. This place used to be full of people now the place s..ks,along with the people working or should I say, collecting PAYCHECKS.Where are the leagues? What happened to the pool tournaments,Karaoke anyone? I came in Halloween expecting a party like the last 2yr past all there was about 10 or 12 people bowling. That was just part of the DREAMER’S LEAGUE that I used to belong to before I quit because the lanes kept breaking down and all the bad service and dirty bathrooms etc.Nice people in that league, but didn’t feel like paying to not have a good time.I SEEMS EACH NEW MANAGER IS WORSE THEN THE LAST!!!!! This last one is the sadest of them all he should be in charge of the janitorial duties but then if he could handle it why is everything so DIRTY?!!!!

I have bowled in the program for 4yrs.,when we had about 8 kids. Then the guy in pro shop,……,came to our help and turned the program around to where at one time we had 45 kids. We went to tournaments and competed in different events. ….. had us all dress to impress at all the events and represented I qualified 2yrs. in a row. Then the new manager gave the program to .. Now we have about 11 kids agin that’s pretty said, the last tournament there was noone there to help us and we didn’t do well. So much for .. caring or the other guys helping to ruin the JR program. The manager who has no knowledge about bowling should’ve left things alone. Instead he humiliated ….. and hurt us all,the kids, thanks for forcing my friends away. I have no choice but to stay I don’t drive so I’m thinking of going to Upland Bowl.I’ll miss the guys in the pro shop they really care about me and all the kids

The manager is a jerk and yells and belittles his staff in front of customers like me. On Oct.14th I was standing at the front ready to pay and had to wait because the manager yelling he didn’t cuss but you knew he wanted to.I was embaressed for them and for me.I certainly didn’t need to hear all he had to say,he should have had more CLASS in front of a paying customer. Where did AMF find this classless person, I realize he is in charge but does he have to walk around like he is better then everyone including the customers who help pay his salary? I have talked to him and really knows nothing about bowling or even business in the last few months I have seen my friends leave the center and have gone to Upland Bowl just like I have and joined league there just like I have. This man has lied so much and has broken so many promises that no one trusts his word, the sheets never got better, the lanes s*ck,the machines keep braking down,so after 3 mo.of lies I’m out of here. The new mechanic can’t fix much when he and everyone sit upfront more then half the time this hotshot mechanic hasn’t fixed anything instead there is alot more machines that don’t work. What the hay happened to the other guy?We sure didn’t have this much downtime as they have now, maybe that is why the place is like a ghost town. When the lady named Naomi was there it seemed a lot more people were there bowling alot more, why did she quit? If the manager had any sense he would do whatever it took to get her back but he won’t hire her back because she knows more he does and his macho mentelity won’t allow him.Even that it really would in the longrun make look like a genious. Oh well so much for machoism better to be proud and finish killing the golden goose, what a loser, but he is a proud MACHO MAN,not smart but incontrol.I sad for us that really care about the BOWLIUM.

It seems that since the new assistant manager took over doing the league sheets they are always wrong. She really has a bad demeaner and definitely not bowler friendly or kind to people under her. From talking to some of staff some have quit due to the fact she treats them like she is the mistress and they the slaves. Is this anyway to keep harmony among staff & bowlers? How did this person get this job when she knows nothing about bowling and less about the treatment of customers? I was told by a league secretary that when she complaint to this person that league sheets were wrong she was told to “DEAL WITH IT!” All these new people seem to be really close some it seems a little to friendly toward eachother. The word is that they all came to AMF CORP. from another co. and are therefore covering each others backs. If this is so it cannot be good for the customers, staff especially the co. but then “WHAT THEY DONNOT KNOW….!”.

How could they raise food prices with a ‘C’ rating? The food is’nt any better and the service is just OK so what deserves a price increase? The lanes breaking down surely don’t deserve an increase,so it must be the overload in management that has no idea what to do and how to fix the problems, right? Why put people in charge that are at best suited as janitors and lane servers. Is AMF not in the business to bring fun to the bowler, that’s how they advertize,ALWAYS MEANS FUN,where is the fun part? Doen’t corporate and the people in positions above location care how the place is being run and who is running the loonybin? A great way to make MONEY is to shorten the hours of operation and overload the staff with incompetent people to run it,RIGHT. The restrooms smell and I’m sure will entice others to want to come back and bring their friends. A couple of years ago I came there because my friend turned me on to the guy in the Pro Shop those people are knowledgable and one of the reasons I do keep coming back. I’ve bowled at Upland Bowl for league and been treated alot nicer and curtious. It’s sad to say but they seem to care about us the BOWLER,league,or just if you go there to practice.HOW SAD IT IS,how sad for us who care about the sport and see the people AMF has chosen to carry on this great old sport when it is trying so hard to rebound back to it’s more glorious and prosperity. At this time this place has missed the boat,it is sinking.Someone please help,if someone from AMF corporation sees this article don’t let this center dye.

these lanes s*ck and management is none really not committed to bowling.people have some knowledge about the job and what bowlers want and need but first you have to care. these new people have no clue, how could they when first one has to know the basics about business.the first rule is overhead cannot be more then revenue brought in,to do that you have to advertize. the staff does nothing to about league, open bowling and information on flyers are even wrong.who is responsible for errors if not the manager and assistant manager.who is running the center the old guy at the front desk, the girl doing the league sheets because if that is the case this center is in big trouble.i hear the center is getting new carpet is this suppose to fix the problem,it may be prettier but ALL the problems to other things wrong,we have so many brokendown lanes we never know what lanes we really are going to bowl on.when the other head mechanic was here we had some trouble but never to this degree.why consider bringing him back at least he could solve some of what was wrong with this very OLD EQUIPMENT,i mean old.

NEED NEW MACHINES, the old ones are not fast enough and are breaking down. Sincerely BIll a league bowler

The equipment seems to break down daily. I have been there a few times and the lanes are never working correctly. The staff sits behind the counter talking and act as if you don’t exist.

This place is sure different then when that redhaired lady worked here.We had a party then and then again lately everything ran like clockwork. This last was a joke they acted like didnot know we had a reservation. That guy Ed took our time and it wasnot in there book so at first we where not going to be taken in somehow they said they could acommadated us after 45 min. wasted. We ended with 6 people to a lane,of course Ed denied he had taken our reservation.Nice guy to have at front desk that makes mistakes but worst of all he will not admit his mistake and that to me is just lying, if he lies about something so small. He didnot apologize and acted as if we were stupid and hear that he now is in charge of the jr. program. Is he now going to pass on his values to these youngsters?

Comment Date: 8/26/2006 Name: sukim
Every time my friends and I visit I am amazed at the difference time and the changing of staff. On your web your hours and the actual time you and staff are open is false advertizing. We have been there a few times only to be turned away so from now on we will be doing business at upland bowl where they at most want our money. I MAY BE YOUNG but am a economic major in business and know the way to keep economicaly sound is by giving the customer great products respect to be treated better then other competitors. The man at the front on sat. should never be there sending people to other places to buy balls etc. why is he sending us and others elsewhere. WE have been into the pro shop there and they have been very helpful so much so we bought our shoes there and plan to send others regardless of your emploee efforts to harm your pro shop. Sending people to other places is an injustice to business and counter productive and bad business ethics. Even people working fast foods and counters are more curtious then most of your staff. Whatevere happened to “HI HOW ARE YOU CAN I HELP YOU.” It has been replaced with “I DON T KNOW IF HAVE THE LANES FOR YOU” WHEN there is no one there.T HE SHORT spanish girl is the worst I thought she had been fired but came back with less humility then before alot less friendly. ASIDE FROM THAT your restrooms are a mess and smell like some of the bars I have been to at least there people ara drunk so we can excuse it sort of.Bring back the REDHEADED LADY she made every effort to accomidate bowlers needs from young as well as old.I have not met any one that represented your place business and knew so much of bowling as well as there needs. Why did your center get away? That is what I THINK see if management is smart enough to at least look into all of these concerns.

how is it possible that a great place for bowling has been turned over to none bowlers to run. as a child and later as a mother i brought my kids here to learn about the sport I loved. sad to say I found people in managment and staff that know nothing or care about the sport and know less about business. where oh where did amf find these people. the kitchen has a C rating when I was there on a tues. evening they were out 3 of the items I tried to order so I ordered nothing. I was standing by the front desk and could not believe the staff turned away a party of 45 or 50 young asians. Can this be happening at this time when bowling is suffering a down turn. Is this the reason this center is losing so many of the regular bowlers. It was not this way a year ago until amf brought all these new people and kept the old timers upfront that are snutty, uninformed about leagues etc. the old man that works sat. mornings all his cared about was staring at my top when I tried to inqiure about the JR. program I decided NOT to enroll my 13 year old girl after he told me he was going to be the new head coach. I find that unbelievable that AMF would allow such a person around kids at least he will not be in contact with my girl and that is sad. I so wanted her to learn about the sport where I spent so many happy times with friends and making new ones who am still keep in touch with. My girl will not have this experience at this center maybe elsewhere. How many others have been off on bowling when there are people that belong doing other jobs where they come in contact with paying customers young and old.

On saturday aug. 19th i went with a friend to enroll my son and my friends daughter in the junior program at AMF BOWLIUM Montclair. we were invited to attend by chris who runs the pro shop. to our dismay when we got there this guy, who said he was the manager came on so arrogant and strong that he was in charge and with all the authority over the junior programit turned me off. some of thr coaches, parents tried to control what went on in this program it was not what i wanted for my child.thank god chris took over to get things done. i only came because i had heard so much about chris and his father’s teaching, my friend whose kids are in the program said it was a very well run program with chris at the helm. it’s sad to say chris was left out in the cold for ed who never cared about the program for some two and a half years when there was no one else around from what my friend told me at least this guy who runs the pro shop knew what to do cause he took over the meeting cause none of the upper managment knew what to do.people complained about the scoring and this girl name crystal blamed it on the computers. my best friend told me when the last lady ran the sheets there where no such problems. i may not know anything about bowling but i seemed to know as much as the management did that’s what turn me away from this program,i truly felt sad for the children who truly didn’t seem to understand what was going on.after the meeting i went to use the restrooms and the way it was i’m glad i had made my decision to not stay here the restroom was a mess,no paper towels and it looked like it had not been clean in weeks so just beware from a mother who cares and it’s safe to say we will travel else were for a junior program.

Just like the majority of bowling centers, this establishment has changed from a once ‘famed’ bowling center with many great stories to just another recreational bowling alley with non-tenured bowling staff that don’t really care about the sport, just the job!!!

Comment Date: 8/20/2006 Name: pam
I am on a weekly league and I think that it is not fair that we do not get the lanes cleaned every week prior to us bowling at 6:00pm. There have been children and adults on the lanes who leave not only normal dirt, but food in the sitting area as well as on the lane. Then the league bowls come and have to deal with that. I think we pay enough so that we can get some extra support to make the lanes clean and polished. It should not be that hard to do, considering that the leagues are what keep the bowling centers in business

this place is not up to par, restrooms are missy, snack bar got a C rating and the old guy at the desk is a perv. he was checking out my 13 teen year old.he put us in front of the desk so he could watch her bowl, talked to my wife and i about some learn to bowl class he runs but when my daughter told me what he was up to we got up and left,he offered us some free games to stay but i had to leave before i had words with this pervert.

We visit the Bowlium as often as we can. As lovers of mid-century modern architecture, our group appreciates the space age design of the Bowlium and retro cocktail bar. The equipment is state-of-the-art and the atmosphere is great.
