Better think twice before using a credit or debit card in the arcade… They not only double charged me, but did so one week after I was there. And then they claimed they never received the money, which is odd because their name is the only one that appears on my bank statement. These charges were what my bank called “forced” charges, as they were never pre-authorized by the bank for funds – happened on Cal Bowl’s end. The GM and accountant at Cal Bowl simply continued to advise me to dispute with my bank – which means I have to close down my debit account, fill out forms, wait for 10 days to receive a new card and reimbursement for unauthorized charges, meanwhile, Cal Bowl gets to keep the money… Try KDB in Long Beach, far more entertaining, and you don’t get ripped off!

Great idea putting that comedy show in on Thursday nights. I love most of the performers. I won’t go to the Improv again.

Huge bowling alley! I went there one morning and walked up to the counter to pay for a lane. The young blond girl working there just looked at me and then picked up the phone and made a call as I stood there with my money in hand. She talked on the phone for several minutes before an older woman came out of a side room and looked at me. As she looked at me I held up the money in my hand to indicate that I wanted to rent a lane. she ignored me and went back into the room she just came from. Eventually someone else arrived at the counter looking to rent a lane and the blond girl got off the phone and helped them first. She then helped me and gave me a lane next to some gang members. As I started putting on my shoes at my assigned lane, one of the gang members said “HEY, WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM WHITE BOY”. I said “Nothing, just want to roll some balls”. The gang member then came up to me and said “ROLL THIS” and punched me in the face. I began to bleed quite badly from my nose, but I was able to stop it fairly well. I decided to just forget what happened and begin to bowl. My nose started to bleed again and this caused the gang member that had hit me to go to the front desk and complain that I was bleeding all over the place and that it was a health code violation or something. Soon management came and told me that I would have to leave and come back when I wasn’t bleeding. I asked if I could have a refund for the game I had bought, but they told me that I couldn’t since my friend had already bowled all the frames. I looked over to my lane and saw that in the mean time one of the other gang members had bowled on my lane, using up all the frames I had payed for. I gathered up my stuff and began to leave. The next thing I knew I was waking up in that same little side room that I mentioned earlier. A couple of staff members were looking at me saying “Hey man, you alright?” I asked what happened and they said that according to the young men bowling in the lane next to mine, I had just fainted. However I had a huge bruise on the back of my head as if someone had hit me with a baseball bat, or a bowling ball?. All in all, it was an OK experience, the 3 frames I did have a chance to roll, were strikes. 🙂

I like the low prices. I dont like a few workers. Vicky is the worst worker of all. I also dont like carrol at all. Only thing I wish they had better scoring and tvs on each lane. Also wish they had a built in speaker system that plays music all the time.

I have heard that Alex Mann is trying to but this center with his father. Hope the deal falls through because every center they run fall apart.
Good Luck

This is the best bowling alley I have been to in awhile. I im currently in a league here and it’s great. The bowling prices are reasonable and the atmosphere here is good. The only thing that I dislike about this place is that the prices they over price everything at the Snack Shop but I guess thats why you bring your own drinks. Other than that the bowling lanes are pretty good and it’s a fun place to bowl

I have found in my experiences at Cal Bowl that the lanes are fairly decent, and the average bowler is pretty good. However, there is always a wait, and if you are not in one of Cal Bowl’s leagues, you never get a chance to bowl. “Walk in leaguer’s”, on a none league night, get put on a lane immediately. While all of the rest of us “none league bowlers” get to sit on a long list for an hour or so before we get to bowl. What’s up with that? It’s horrible customer service! The employees make you feel like, you should be honored that they are allowing you to bowl at their bowling alley. No more for me, thank you. I’m moving on to the next bowling alley.

Nice clean center. I’ve been bowling there for 5 years and do however have a few complaints. The ball return for Lanes 3&4 take HUGE chunks out of your ball. They haven’t fixed this since I’ve been going there and I now refuse to bowl on those lanes. Also, in the morning hours there are rather loud and obnoxious people that bowl there, think of having Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle sharing a lane next to you and you get the picture. It just grates on you after awhile as you try to concentrate on your game while they’re hooting and hollering all over the place.
Also in the morning hours a local center for the mentally disabled bring their people there and that can be quite distracting as well, expecially when some of them have a fit and throw themselves onto the ground and roll around screaming.
If you see gang members lurking outside, come back another time. It’s not worth going in. Trust me.
I miss Java Lanes.

Would it be possible to list the leagues forming for the Fall and dates the league starts? Do you have any bowling clubs at your center? If so could you list? Thank you for your assistance with this matter. Your site is full of a wealth of information and the photo’s are beautiful.I have heard that Cal Bowl is a wonderful place to bowl.

I bowl here and the conditions are very challenging and the best bowlers in L.A. are here. So, if you don’t bowl at Cal that’s because you can’t bowl.

Comment Date: 7/8/2004 Name: Congrats to the Cal-Bowl lists this bowling alley as the second best in the LA area, right behind the ultra-modern, ultra-chic, ultra-$$$ Lucky Strike lanes at Hollywood & Highland. I think we should support this place, now that unfortunately the historic Java Lanes is being demolished. Thank you Mayor O’Neill, Councilmen Colonna, and Carrol!

In your second edition of your newsletter, you mentioned a combination scotch doubles tournament on May 1st. The time and cost was not mentioned. It might be nice to include that for your next tournament. I bowl at your center and I did not see anything about it. Maybe I’m blind. Your newsletter is very nice.
