Congratulations Ken Schlomann on your 802 Series. At Van Houten, that’s a rarity given its probably the most difficult shot in North Jersey. For example, that would be an 850+ at most other local houses. Nice job!!

Not too bad. lanes were pretty decent and challenging. pink gutters?! LOL . overall not a bad place but Garden Palace is much nicer.

Decided to join a league after experiencing outstanding cutomer service during a birthday bowl. I not only heard it was a difficult shot but experienced it as well. I made the adjustment with the help of Craig Pizzano and couldn’t be happier. It’s worth the trip from deep in Bergen County. Thanks guys!!

Man, you guys are great!! Had a BD party there last week and the service and atmosphere is unmatched. The smaller the center the more attention you get and we got it. Will be coming in with a couple of teams for the winter.

To anonymous comments dated 5/17/2011. You are obviously sleeping with the owner of another bowling center and that center reeks of jealously. Van Houten is not loaded with big headed egotistical morons out to destroy another centers reputation. It’s a small center and its a perfect hit and fit within the community. People come here to bowl and have fun!!

As long as people want to tell it like it is, lets have at it. Why does everyone feel the need to bash other centers? Its a FACT that league bowling is down in ALL centers, but it is not because this center or that center is better than the other. Part of the problem is the economy, many families and individuals dont have the disposable income they have had in the past. The other problem is families go in so many different directions with various activities it does not leave much spare time to dedicate to a full league season. If bowling centers are to survive, those are the issues that need to be addressed, not the constant bickering about who has the better center. They also need to address the fact that bowling has lost its dignity. The USBC is partly to blame for this by allowing centers to do anything they want with oil patterns and passing every honor score bowled. In my day it actually meant something to bowl a 300 or an 800, now it doesnt mean squat. Yet somehow center operators think this is a good thing. I used to bowl in several leagues a week, not any more since the skill level of the game has disappeared. I have no desire to be beaten by some kid who has no clue what it means to actually hit a mark on a lane instead of just winging it to the gutter and watching it hook back. Thats what the game has become, so keep it, I dont need it anymore. Unless bowling centers decide to fix the problems together instead of bashing each other, this game is doomed.

Let’s tell it like is in the pass 3 years your center has lost league bowlers and one full league I bowl there this is not here say.

What a great place!! Lanes – tough but consistent;
Hospitality – Excellent; Food – Great menu choices, inexpensive and delicious; Pro shop – Craig really knows the business. Sold me a ball that really turned my average around; Bar – Lisa, what a Hottie!! Now that’s service with a smile.
See you this summer and fall, with additional teams pulled from another house.

The last time you bowled at Parkway was in the Mark Roth ownership era, you had no problem with the house back then when you were a had 220 average, where were you when all the high average bowlers stayed away from Parkway because the shot was not easy like every where else

Comment Date: 1/28/2011 Name: G Man
When you shoot a great score here you earned it. An average of 200 here is a 220+ average at Elmwood Park/Wayne. You want to be humbled, bowl at Van Houten. You actually have to work for a good score!! Scored a 300 there – I earned it!! What satisfaction do you get with an easy shot? Bowling at some of these other centers (Elmwood Park/Wayne) is like wading through a shallow stream. Swim across the Passaic River in the middle of the winter, no life jacket. Now that’s a challenge!!

VHL can sometimes be difficult to score, but, when the pins do go down and yes, they do go down, it is a very rewarding experience to bowl at one of the best bowling alleys in the state.
The low ceilings give the impression that the lanes are a shorter distance than they should be.

The house has to me the hardest around, they dont call this place “ten pin tap” for nothing. I have never seen so many splits from pocket shots, and I have been a league bowler since 1970. There is no carry or mix what so ever!! They never seem top condition the lanes for our leagues. Will be leaving these lanes for a better house next year.

Comment Date: 8/28/2009 Name: Johnny Shark
Yo this is Johnny. I bowl at VHL everyday and have only good things to say about the place, except for a certain gentleman at the front desk named Kyle. He s*cks. Someone buy me a beer Aww-haw-haw-haw!

I went there this pass week while i was on spring break. I have to say that the house is small but the lanes are great and the personel is so nice and answered all my questions

I’ve been going there for some time. Forget what you read from all these – inconsiderate, obnoxious, and annoying wanna-be bawlers out there (F.U.A.H – go else – we dont need you to waste your time there, if you don’t like.) Remember, “Only bad reviews are written”. For the price: THIS IS THE BEST PLACE AROUND PERIOD (.)

Great house! Great food & the King of the Hill on Tuesday Nights kicks a**. It gives every bowler a chance to win a tournament.
I LOVE THE PLACE!

Who is this Carson? and why is he ducking me? I’ll put my vintage 49’ers jacket up against anything he’s got. 1 game roll off. Bowl him blind folded with a slice of Abe’s pizza in one hand.

LOL to the entry posted on 3/4/08. Can’t say I have ever had the chicken fingers at Chris’s. Didn’t know I was so popular that someone would fake a post using my name.
Staff is great. Eric does a great job running the place and Craig in the Pro Shop definitely knows his stuff. Highly recommended!!! My 2 year old son is a big fan.

I have been bowling in this house for a year and a half. The staff is very friendly and the lanes are well maintained. You can play a wide range of shots with the oil pattern on the lanes.I am currently averaging 205 and will continue to bowl in ths house.

Comment Date: 3/4/2008 Name: Ken Carson
Tough house. Not enough lanes. The chicken fingers gave me heartburn. The bathrooms smell like a combination of old spice & tar paper. And the girls that work there look like they spend PLENTY of time at the snack bar. With that said, if anyone needs a 4th who carries a 230 I’m your guy.

I just Visited Van Houten Lanes for the first time in a few years. I must say that is vastly improved from the last time I was there. The lanes and scoring areas were clean and the overall atmosphere was much nicer now that smoking is not allowed. The bar was well stocked and adequately priced. The staff was very pleasant, especially a gentlemen named ‘Mike.’ I would recommend this bowling center to others.

this is my favorite bowling alley ever. i’m into bowling hardcore and this place is the best. the workers there are gnarlyy and funny. the pizza place got changed to chris’ pizza which now RULES! so yea its great go there.

This center is ideal for any bowler whether recreational or competetive. I enjoy most the fair and expected challenges which allow me to use every skill I ever learned. Lane conditions are fair and are complimentary to all styles.
Equally, Craig Pezzano puts the “PRO” in Pro Shop. His skills and advice have kept my game sharp and versatile and I owe him a great deal of credit for many of my accomplishemnts- I have always achieved the desired reaction with Craig’s outstanding work and know how.
What I like best about Craig is all the skills and knowledge are available at a moments notice and he does not wear his talents like badges of honor..says an awful lot about a guy.

van houten lanes is a fun place to be i take my friends all the time and we have the best time abe’s pizza isnt the BEST palce buht its okay but still i think its the best in the niegborhood

Comment Date: 1/3/2007 Name: Walter
As stated in other reviews, this is the worst bowling center in the area. The manager is never around and the staff are rude. Abe’s food is better refered to as low grade dog food. The place is dirty and the shoe rental is disgusting.

T.S. – We come there every Tuesday and have an aweseom time. Even though we break their equipment

Our family has attended many bowling parties from girlscouts, boyscouts and birthday parties and have never had an unpleasent experience. The children had a great time, the service was good and the food was OK too! Nice place to have a good time!

I found a pair of women’s shoes there once. Did yours stick Staci? If so, these were them. They’re in a dumpster behind Wallington Lanes. They also seemed tight on me as well.

Comment Date: 10/7/2005 Name: Staci Lugo
I lost a pair of shoes there once. For all I know some guy could have picked them up and is probably still using them.

Comment Date: 8/2/2005 Name: Pete M.
The house is very small, only 16 lanes. Abe’s pizza is less than appetizing. The help is nice, but the pro shop guy is always in a bad mood and his shop is as big as a phone booth. Lanes are not easy to score on either.
