I bowl in a few leagues at Gates. It has changed for the positive the last few years, but what has not changed is how often the lanes break down. I wish they did more preventative maintenance on downtimes. Recently we had 30 minutes of downtime during league play while they fixed something. No alleys were “available” to move us to. Overall it is a good place to have in Rochester, especially with a lot of centers that have closed in the previous years. I just deal with it.

Bowled in a league at Gates for over 26 yrs. We moved the league to another center. Staff was not friendly and problems with alleys every week. Watched people at the grill sneeze, wipe nose, hair, handle money and not change gloves but continue to cook food. Gross

I too have found the staff at Gates to be less than friendly. They have seemed to improve slightly though. As for wanting 2 lanes, I often do this when working on different things. I too have been told I can only have one lane, even when the place is empty. Before jumping on the staff though, lets talk about the clueless AMF upper management that sets the rules the center staff has to follow. I think that is where the problem is, being that every AMF center I try not to bowl in, works pretty much the same way. Here’s a thought people. Centers are local establishments that many people have bowled in for years. When you come in and try and rebrand and take away the centers identity, you alienate long time customers. Throw in hiring of staff, many of which do not bowl from what I can tell and you end up with the disaster known as AMF. Might want to rethink your strategy.

We just came back from the Lilac City Tournament, the shot at AMF Gates was a good shot, you have to carry the pocket light, I was leaving several solid 8 pins and solid 10 pins. The staff at AMF Gates and the pro shop staff were very helpful. The center has 48 synthetic lanes from AMF, the brunswick automatic scoring and ball returns. It would be nice if they has the blue AMF sign to let you know where to turn into the center. We are looking forward to the 2010 Lilac City Tournament.

Pre Bowling is bottom of the totem pole- sorry. The center has lanes designated just for you, every week at the same time. If you can’t make it then, you have to follow their schedule. Since it’s an AMF center, I’m guessing they have an open bowling special on Sunday mornings. You’d be surprised how quickly lanes will fill up if the times are properly advertised. Would you want your league lanes given away to open bowlers who walk in during your league time? It’s gotta work both ways. And any clown that wants two lanes to practice on has no clue how to practice. What are you practicing, remembering how to switch lanes? Work on your game-if you know how.

I am a league bowler at Gates, have been for he last 4 years. I went there one Sunday morning for a pre-bowl The center was completely empty I approached the counter and told them why I was there. The counter person told me I had to wait 30 minutes to see if there any open bowlers that might show up. I asked why and the person said that is where make our money. So I have made the decision to ball at Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, NY for my summer league, I like Gates but they need to learn something about customer service.

sorry Todd Nupp but i have to agree with the numerous negative comments about this place. i went and asked if i could have two lanes to practice on and the man at the counter gave me a rude smile and said, “I can give you one” there was nobody in the damn place!!!! why couldnt i have had 2 lanes??? Plus when i arrived at my lane, the person about 4 lanes over was given 2 lanes!?! Now thats rude!!!
HaHa i clicked on this by accident but it was quite funny to see Todd Nupps name here lol

Going into this bowling center is like walking into a 1970’s time warp. Its very ugly, and desperately needs remodeling! I also found the staff to be very unfriendly, and I will never go there again. I took my young children open bowling one day, and 2 frames into the 2nd game, we were told we would have to hurry up and get out of there because they had to get the lanes ready for a league (yes, they actually said it that way – they didn’t offer to move us, they just said we had to hurry up and get out of there). The league only took up 12 lanes, so WHY did they put us there for open bowling, knowing that we might be a while with young children? They weren’t crowded, and there are many lanes in this center. When I called ahead to see if they had open bowling, I was told there was open bowling until 11:00 PM. This was 4:00 in the afternoon! Two of their staff members practically stood on top of us waiting for us to finish – I was very uncomfortable, and felt bad to have to rush what was supposed to be a fun family outing!

48-lane center with AMF pinspotters, synthetic lanes, wood approaches, and AS-80 scoring. Place is generally decent, but service has been horrible when I’ve gone there to bowl. Took 15 minutes to get a lane one day because the employee wanted to fix something in the bar first.

The Gates Lanes are not always supportive of their leagues. Often we have arrived at out league time with others on our allies. The concessions personnel are slow and inconsiderate of the fact that bowlers visit concessions between frames and don’t have time to stand around while they talk. They also take exhorbitant time to to get your order and don’t even deliver it to your tables. Most likely the league will be going elsewhere next year.

I take the 8 to 11 years old to bowl, the staff is very family friendly, and always offers good deals.
