I can assure you the man you are speaking of did not retire. He was fired. He was ask to tell people that he retired but he refused to do so.

What is wrong with this place. My family and I started coming back on occasions and noticed that the older gentleman had returned. My children remembered him and let know how much they liked the way he talked to them. My son who is now ten told him that he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up because he did not before. Now he is gone again. I was told he retired. But when he talked to us on our lane he said that he wished my son well and hoped that he would come back when he graduated. I later found out that he did not retire. He was a great man. He always showed compassion and professionalism. All the employees should follow his lead. You will be missed.

I have noticed that the older guy that used to be there some time ago is back. I love this Yuma and the way he handles his customers I watched him one night deal with a very irrate individual who had no cost to be that way he handled it sheer professionalism.I also bowl in a team event during the week I was kind of curious as to who the Jonah was standing next to him who I have no idea is. When I asked the older gentleman oh heck his n ame is Archie for some help he instructed me to ask to join the standing next to him which I responded that I don't know who is. Is he someone important if so then he needs to interact with his customers. Thank me for being back Archie.

Went to check out the cosmic bowling Saturday night. The guy working the counter was so slow and uncaring we stood in line for ~15 min before we left, didn't see one person move through the line even though it looked like most of the lanes were open.

Having previously worked in several bowling centers for almost a decade, I am constantly amazed at how poorly this center is run, and it's getting worse by the day. I have bowled in leagues at Anchor Lanes since the early '90s, and I cannot understand how the ownership has let this center decline to it's current state. The machinery is simply in poor condition - there's no other way to put it. The same issues on the same lanes crop up every single week: scoring on 7&8, scoring on 1&2, sweeping spares on 39&40, etc. These have been problems for TWO SEASONS and never have been fixed! Scoring monitors not working, touch screens that don't work, air blowers not working, monitors "duct-taped" to keep them from opening. And despite the desperate need to bring in a roving mechanic to fix these issues, the center goes out and buys new carpet! Woo-hoo! So while the management is constantly dreaming up new food and drink specials, the machines continue to not work and frustrate your main concentration of income: league bowlers. I know for a fact that our league has lost at least four teams over the past few seasons due to frustrations with the machines, causing us to finish late or have to change lanes. And lately it seems like the center is run by kids. I took my children bowling several times over this summer, and each time there were kids working the desk and the machines. Half the time when you needed help, they were nowhere to be found, or down on one of the lanes in front of the desk bowling! On one visit, we moved lanes 3 times because one lane wouldn't score correctly and another wouldn't set down a full rack of pins. As I said, having worked in bowling centers for a long time, you have to put money into your machines and keep them running. Either hire a qualified mechanic and PAY HIM the money to fix the machines, or bring in a roving mechanic to "PM" the lanes and get them working properly. Stop worrying about the asthetics of the center and fix what needs to be fixed, and have a management presence in the center that doesn't hide in the office all day or night. In comparison to other centers I have either worked at or bowled at, this is probably the most poorly run bowling center that I've ever seen.

Anchor Lanes has had some changes done, they have gotten a new head mechanic, they have had some new monitors installed, some employees with bad attitudes have been let go, and new better ones have been hired. And Johnny is doing an amazing job as manager

way to hire yet another pathetic GM

Thanks bowler, probably why you are not winning. I enjoy the company of most but you obviously are not in the same position and new to this league. I understand your feelings and believe me I wish you well. I really hope that you never get to feel the way I do. If so I hope that you express that. Of course that is if the league is still there. Good luck to you.

Comment Date: 1/7/2013 Name: Landlubber
WTF.... who is running this joint. That is definitely what is turning out to be. I am just glad that at least bowlers get there lineage back. But that does not make the center looks as though any improvements have been made. Just hope you guys find a way to get it right, even though it is too late for my team. April cannot get here soon enough.

I heard from a friend that someone that I had met on numerous occasions here was no longer working at this establishment. That is awful. I watched him sacrifice himself with so many angry and belligerent people for the the good of the company to point that I asked him if he owned the business. He modestly answered no, but that did not diminish his attitude. You sir will be miss. I have been there since and the attitude and commitment has not been the same. I just can only pray for you.

Comment Date: 11/7/2012 Name: Landlubber
It is difficult to understand that the people who have caused the most problems got raises which you could see on facebook. However the ones who care the most were relieved of their duties. I know that after eight years in this league that my yeam will not be returning. Only because I heard slander from someone that was selling tickets at the SLC. If I were that person I would look to perform a civil suite against that person. You lost great people.

Comment Date: 10/12/2012 Name: Archie Palmer
Thank you concerned bowler. I have to say that working with so many people has been a pleasure for me. Saying I am a legend is flattering and I thank you for that. But I only did what was important to you the customer. Watching not just children but everyone learn and grow in the sport I have been involved in most of my life. But bowling like any sport it is still a business. So with that said still you will have no problem with frequenting Anchor. It will always be in my opinion the best place for family recreation as well as competitive leagues. Just remember roll to go bowl.

Comment Date: 10/12/2012 Name: Bowler
What is up with the new guy at the counter? He look dirty and unkept and this is the first thing that you see when you arrive? Bad Impression!

Comment Date: 10/3/2012 Name: Concerned Bowler
Well what is next? What could be classified as the last legend of Anchor is gone. I feel bad for him, but good for him at the same time. For years he has made certain that this center has been a pleasant place to come to. Look at all the people whom lives he has touched in so many different ways. For a fact he has watched my children grow and become adults inspiring them all along the way. Maybe someone else will come along, but they will never have the same effect. Thank you Archie! In a lot of minds and hearts you will always be a legend.

Comment Date: 9/1/2012 Name: Good bowler
I have been doing this for a lot of years. The one thing I have noticed is that no matter how much managers try they will always be the scapegoat. I guess that is the same in any sport. It however is a shame because most of them are dedicated to their profession. I think all of you know to whom I am referring. They can only do and deal with what they are given. Good luck to you and may God Bless you.

There WILL be sponsor money added to prize fund no matter how many teams show up for the shoot out league. So if there are 16 teams, there will be $10,000 added. If there are 8 teams it would be $5,000 added

Comment Date: 7/29/2012 Name: Anchor Employee
Yes Johnny isn't here anymore because he left on his own and cause he had another job already. And with the Anchor Lanes Shootout we are just trying new things here, so why bash it until you try it. Our center isn't perfect but neither are the rest of them out there. We are improving our center, to get newer systems in here. So come check out the Fall Leagues we have starting soon.

Comment Date: 7/14/2012 Name: Twice Bitten
OMG, Now Johnny and Mark are not there any more. I thought the point was to make the place better. Those guys tried to do the right things there and were met with nothing but road blocks. Now the place is in scramble mode to salvage anything they can. The same person still owns it and why should we donate our money to the continued mediocraty and non caring we seen this past fall season. Now they are going as far as to offer ONE league $10k to stay there, claiming they have a sponsor but its still based on teams showing up. Really? Thats not a sponsor, thats a bribe. Don't know where I am bowling this Fall, however, I know its not going to be there.

Comment Date: 7/9/2012 Name: Bowler
Everyone will agree that Anchor has had it share of mechanical problems, building issues, etc because it was put on the back burner for so long. New management has taken over the last few months and are working very hard to change things. They have been working to get the lanes running in tip top shape for fall, new carpeting and other parts of the building are being put in and cleaned up, flat screen monitors are beginning to be installed and customer service is being worked on as a high priority. People have been let go and others hired because customer service should be excellent not just so-so. No one can change the past issues, but I have seen great changes there lately and I know that many other great things will happen in the future! There are people there now who care about Anchor and want it to be the best that it can be, so before you make your final decisions, I would check them out this fall and see all the wonderful things that are occurring. I am!

The fact is Brian Clarke fired John King and brought in a new "mechanic" and all hell broke loose. Did John have some issues? Yes, But 99% of the lanes always worked. This new fella is a bone head extraordinaire!!! First and foremost if this guy talked to anyone at my business the way he talks to employees there he will be walked out IMMEDIATELY. Larry, as the owner has let this happen for way to long. I am very disappointed in his leadership skills. Simple business 101, employees will follow the example of the owner/manager. Slack leadership equals slack employees. Larry don't be fooling yourself. If you can't see how disappointed your consumers are, you WILL when leagues don't return next fall.

The lanes are falling apart. It's a 32 lane house now with air conditioning for 20 lanes. Glad the head mechanic can get away with no maintenance and cussing out Dot Collins. Nice...

Comment Date: 3/20/2012 Name: a Bowler
Anchor was stupid for letting John King go! Bringing this other guy in to take his place was the worst decision the center made! Might as well say its a 34 lane alley, as lanes 39/40 are still down and there is ALWAYS 4 to 6 others lanes down at all times, everytime Im in there!! Now that JC's is updating, you should take notice and do something about all the crap that needs attention here, even the employees. How and why they deal with all the crap, is beyond me! Bring John King back!!! Give him the go-ahead with the money issue and get this place back! You need John and Archie!! Wake up!!!

I was at the center the other night and was impressed with the upfitting they are doing. I do understand it is hard to do that type work with center being open 7 days week. I got to give KUDOS to Jonathan and Shannon!! Everytime I go in there they take the time to have friendly conversation. Thanks, I'll continue to return to do open play.

I'm going to put short comments on how I feel and hope you take notice! Keep Archie doing his thing, he's great. The older white man at the desk aint forth the money you pay him. "V" in the snack bar is the best! Michael in the bar is great. Overheard the new mechanic talking with Archie and he was a real jerk. However, I've heard that they think he is good, but why are the lanes in worse condition now than they were when John was there? Get rid of him and Pete and you might get your bowlers back! I know I wont be coming back for the league!! And by the way, you people shut up about the Asian girl at the desk!! She may say a few choice words and sometimes have an attitude, but she loves this place and does a great job making sure league bowlers are taken care of. Oh, she DOES have feelings and a big heart!

Okay let's see.... to the last comment about the girl behind the counter looking like she is going to a strip club.. thank you for this observation, because of this comment myself and a group if my friends went to see this"hussy".... way off sir or ma'am ...if you were reffering to the tall dark haired lady with the glasses that was a joy to deal with than you are an idiot. This girl along with the older woman were awesome to us and more than helpful and nice as hell. I have read some of these past reviews about this place and find it funny as to how many a**-h*les are out there in the world. Yes...the place needs the sign to work so I don't have to turn around and go back and the carpet needs to be cleaned but hey its an active place with great food I.e. the cheese sticks and corn dogs and beer. I will definitely frequent this alley due to the outspoken personalities and great service we received. To the rest of the old shrews in the world maybe you should try not being a COMPLETE MORON AND RUDE AS HELL AND YOU WILL HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME LIKE WE DID. Don't change a thing here except for the sign and you're good to go

There are two people at Anchor Lanes that always greet you with a smile. One of them, Sue Piazolla, is no longer there. I sure wish someone would bring her back. Not only did Sue greet her customers with a smile, she called them by name, and she generally knew your order at the snack bar before you even made it. She was an asset to this bowling alley and knew the meaning of excellent service. We people that bowl on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday sure miss her and wish management would bring her back!

Dear resigning league bowler - You go ahead and go to JC as they have no bowlers! Maybe you bowled {deleted} and have to blame it on someone else. Wow you spend a $100.00 a week on what? The bar and snack bar are certainly not that busy!

Comment Date: 11/16/2011 Name: Bowling here forever
Wow, all of you whom have made negative remarks are obviously crappy bowlers. Yes I would agree that things there are not good as they use to be. But one thing that I do know is that these issues cannot be blamed on The Manager. His responsibilities are limited and yet he still tolerates the crap that we throw in his face. Put yourself in his place and see where you end up. Have you ever really watched this guy. When there is a problem he stands there and watches to see if resolution is there. If not then he does what he can to make it work to the best interest of the bowler. As for you people if you feel you have to do something different, oh well. Thank you Archie, I must say despite all you are under appreciated.

Comment Date: 11/15/2011 Name: Resigning League Bowler
Last night was the last straw for me. It's obvious that the center will never been in good repair. The employees don't care. The management gives you nothing but attitude. I'll take my money elsewhere. My wife and I spend over $100 a week in there, and for what? A poor customer experience. The league bowlers are no longer treated with any respect but we are the ones that help keep the doors open. Well I'm done. Why should we be forced to pay $11 a week for lineage when we get .50 cent quality. I can assure you that some leagues will leave, and others will be reduced significant. Thank you for making what used to be one of the best bowling centers in Columbia, the worst now. Call up J.C....maybe he can tell you how to invest the money you are stealing from the customers.

Comment Date: 11/15/2011 Name: Tired of the bs
It's about time someone from the SLC spoke up. The place is a dump. It's not attractive to the public eye anymore. Sure, people like parties there, but that's because they don't see the workings of the bowling alley on a week to week basis. The employees' attitudes are terrible to say the least. The management doesn't care. The GM, well no one knows what he looks like because he was there for the start of the leagues and if you weren't in the meeting, well you didn't get to meet him. The problem is that no one cares and the owners just want to line their pockets. Maybe if enough complaints are filed, someone will do something. Lee, it's time to step up and do something about this place. It's down right terrible. Come spend a week there...you'll see...

I have bowled in this tournament for many years and I must say this past year was totally ridiculous. I understand that young people are working the floor and sometimes probably do not always get the big picture. However to hear someone shouting at her was to say the least was both embarrassing for her and rude by that individual that I later found out was also an employee there. I am sure that there would have been someone there in charge. If nothing else that is something that I think the tournament director should have been involved in. Speaking of which the only time I saw him was for the announcements. Who was really in charge?

There are a lot of bad comments on here about staff and the bowling ally. Yes the building may be a little run down and the tall girl at the front counter is definitely rude beyond belief. I don't see how someone keeps their job being so rude. It doesn't make any sense. But I'm not here to bash. I had an ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL birthday party. The nice young blond girl Jamey was one of the nicest people i have ever met. She was extremely kind, courteous, very polite, conversed with the children, got everything little thing we asked for right away, and kept every single person happy. I don't remember the last time I've had someone in an establishment be that friendly and hard working. It's sad that's something unusual to find these days. I could not have asked for anything more at my child's party. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you.

Do you people have nothing better to do than bash employees on here?!? If all of these employees were so terrible then why do they still have jobs? Apparently they do what they need to do. And this website isn't meant to be about who's social stills are top notch. Its meant to be about the center. And its a center not an alley for all you ignorant folk. Everyone wants to talk smack yet no one mentions the positives. Archie is a fantastic person and a great manager. Mark was a very fair and social general manager. The snack bar ladies work their a**es off. The front counter employees have to deal with more ignorance than anyone else yet get no credit for the amount of work they do put in. Facebook is a social site so all of that crap is moot. Appreciate the people who work FOR you so you can enjoy a relaxing day. They have bad days just like everyone else. Grow up people.

Anchor Lanes is a poor excuse for a bowling alley. With Mark not being there anymore it will just get worse. They should have Archie be the manager. If the owners of this place thinks that Brian can run 2 centers they are DUMB as a bag of rocks! This guy can't even manage 1 center. There are bowlers at Z that don't even know what Brian looks like. Don't get me wrong I think he's a okay guy (from what I have seen) but he will not be there at night to see his league bowlers. Anchor is a DUMP!!!! The owners keep S*CKING this place dry. Raising the prices on everything and never fixing anything. All the bathrooms are disgusting. I hope someone shows the owners this website. I will be asking all the bowlers I can to leave this center and Z and go bowl at another.

A nice place with a lot of friendly people especially some of the employes Mr. Palmer is alway happy to be of assistance with his customers.Makes you feel happy to be there. The service desk is always helpful with your needs.

Wow, it is amazing just how cruel people can be. I cannot believe the slander of people who put themselves in harms way to accommodate their customer base. Unfortunately the bowling business has it's ups and downs and can be stressful. In reading that entry from stupid, it is obvious that you must be just that. This just sounds like you were "given" things that appeal to you. As far as this person being as you put it a drunk. If I had to deal with a person with your attitude, I would probably want to be drunk as well. You are not stupid, just an idiot. If bowling really means that much to you then purchase a bowling alley of your own a see where that takes you. Good luck to the person having to deal with this bashing. It is no doubt that you do not bend to their level. Stay strong, God has a plan for us all. Oh by the way stupid, I hope that wherever you decide to bowl that you will see everything is not as it seems.

Being friendly doesn't increase revenue. See ya Mark now Jim should be next.

I want to know who the genius was behind this master plan. Get rid of a guy who was always friendly and did the best he could with what he was given and tried to keep the place "above water" (pun intended) and turn it over to a {deleted} who is always drunk??!! This will be my last season with Anchor Lanes.

Hi again Marc! Just wanted to say "Great Catch" with the new girl! She's a keeper. Real personble with the league bowlers and extreamely friendly. Where did you find her? You sure know how to pick 'em! Still got lots of love for the regular crew of coarse. Keep up the great work. I love this place.

The management and employees have been nothing but great to us. My family and I enjoy bowling and eating here. The place could use a few updates but other than that the place is great. Some people need to get a life of their own. Keep up the good work!

We recently relocated to the Columbia area and started bowling at Anchor Lanes. We are absolutely loving this center! The lanes are well maintained and the staff has been so friendly and courteous. I have read some of the other comments and are a little offended. No one at the desk has ever been rude to me,quite the opposite, and the snack bar ladies are great and that gruff bar manager is really nice if you give him a second! Now the whole facebook thing, you have got to go out of your way to find out someones last name, look them up and snoop through their photos....Facebook is a social networking site not a job resource site. Enough said, Thanks Anchor Lanes staff we love bowling with you!

Comment Date: 11/19/2010 Name: JR
Most of the employees are helpful except the two girls at the front counter, they should not have a job there. they are both ***holes, biggest ones you will ever meet. Dont get me started with the females in the snack bar. Most of them have a bad attitude. Seems like they dont want to be there. Cant forget the bar manager who has the worst attitude of all, also he is really creepy

Comment Date: 11/3/2010 Name: OMG! Get a Life!
Shannon is attempting a career in modeling. If you are her friend you should be supporting her instead of dogging her out here in a cowardly way. If you watch TV you can see the same stuff picture wise on there. My best advice would be to take her off of your facebook friends list. So if you don't like it you don't have to look at it. Besides the center can't tell her what she can and can't do in her time off. Obviously you have no life or are insecure about your own self. Get over yourself!

Comment Date: 11/2/2010 Name: jay
the tall girl at the front counter is making the alley look bad. management needs to fire her. the things about the alley that are bad is the tall girl at the counter with the glasses and the bar manager who has a psychotic look about him thats all. positve things about the alley is everyone else there is nice. needs some updating, most alleys do so i cant just pick on anchor.

Comment Date: 11/1/2010 Name: shannon 23 s
I cant believe these employees are still putting up photos of themselves which in some way reflect the bowling. Come on what is this world coming to. Facebook is destroying peoples reputation. The girl at the counter is a sl*t !

the bowling alley needs a facelift, theres new countertops but the carpet definetly needs tlc as well as the ceiling tiles and walls. just knock it down and start from scratch, come on, it really needs to become great again like it did years ago

Comment Date: 8/28/2010 Name: male bowler
employees that work at anchor lanes should watch what they put on their facebook. Even though they just work at a bowling alley it is still a business and their photos and comments on facebook reflect themselves as a person, as well as the bowling alley. so they should be more careful of the photos they put on facebook as well as their comments. the bowling alley is okay, compared to other bowling alleys in sc its one of the better ones !

Comment Date: 7/25/2010 Name: female bowler
the bowling alley is not as good, i mean the condition is terrible, especially the carpet, its disgusting, there are so many stains on the ceiling tiles, just terrible

Near enough everyone there is nice & polite. There is one girl @ the front counter, tall slim girl, think her name is Shannon. She has e real temper & gets frustrated so easily, she needs to take a chill pill before coming to work. Also she is always there even when she isn't working, it ridiculous, do something else besides spending all your time @ anchor

I must say this is a wacky website, however in our browsing we located it. About five years ago my wife and I just happened to drop in being new to the area. Not really knowing anything about bowling. We were greeted casually by the staff on duty and proceeded to have a good time. We were approached by Archie at which point he made our visit even more pleasant. When we left that evening we were determined that we would return just because of the service that we received. We joined two leagues, both of us averaging less than 150. But for us it was about the service. We too are involved in the customer service industry. It seems that people are never really satisfied completely, but we do our best to pacify their needs. We always attempt to put the blame on others when our lives are not as perfect as we would like it to be. We bicker about someone drinking on the job, but yet we may go out to lunch and have a drink or two and then return back to work. Is that not really the same thing? Move on with your lives. Thanks Archie, because of you bowling has become a permanent fixture in our lives, thank you. Eventhough we have moved to another state, I must say we have yet to go into another bowling establishment and get the same attentiveness that you gave to us.

To Funny Name Here. So you go around hiding your name when you write things about people on here. That would tell me that you are the real tool to have to hide your identity on a website. This is for rating the bowling center and not personally bashing people.

The stuff on here is hilarious and classic. But the place get a 3 out of 10 stars from me. Between the drunks and has it been mentioned the raging pedophile that works there, its almost scary. The place is nice dont get me wrong a lot of lanes ok equipment but I think my issue goes back to some of the employees. I mean the guy in the bar is an absolute jerk. He acts like he doesnt want to be there. The last time I was there I brought my son. I went up and ordered myself something and went back 10 minutes or so later to get myself something and this a**h*** acted as if I was burdening him. Im sorry you are at work to work not sit on your ugly a** all day and I inconvenienced you. So happy I don't have a daughter, he would have gotten knocked out the way this creepy guys eyes wander and at young girls too. I sat there and watched Archie drink on the job one night. I'll just say this fall season, tuesday night, birthday shots (whos bday? ill let you think about that one), turn your head and down one...hmmm doesnt sound like something a "manager" should do. And I know that he is probably not an employee of the actual bowling alley but that pro shop guy is a tool. Customer service and returning customers is more important than a sale you j*cka**. I walked in the pro shop one day as they had a conversation about random stuff and this guy thinks he knows absolutely everything.

I want to thank the staff here. They have always been thoughtful and concerning. We enjoy the kids bowl free program. Our 5 year old especially likes the manager on Friday. He seems to always know how to bring a smile to his face. He shows genuine interest by talking to my 9 year old daughter. He has even taken the time to help them with learning how to bowl. There should be more people in the public eye like him. He does well in making his customers feel comfortable. I do believe however that your establishment could use a facelift, especially the steps. Thank you Mr. Manager for what you do, you make our time there pleasurable. We are considering in having our children join the kids bowling league in the fall. I just hope that your boss appreciates you. I will continue to come on Fridays during the summer. Thank you.

The AC is working now. I know they just spent a lot of money on AC. Sometimes there is not too much they can do when its 100 degrees outside. As for always being dead? You must be going at the wrong time. Keep up the good work guys! Still the best place to bowl in Columbia. Could use some updating though. However the beer is cold!!

First off let me point out the fact that I included my first and last name not against anyone but why hide who you are with all the ridicule. Second, the intent of this site is to let any travelers or movers know of lane conditions, prices, house size etc. not to spread libelous(please check the definition if you don't know the term) things about anyone on here. Lets clear up the loose ends...Mark is the manager of the center for a reason. He knows his job and does it well as I've seen first hand. As well as I have seen his gout first hand and know that it is obviously something serious and throughout that hes been there crutches and all. Johnny P is the comedian and competitor of the bunch. He stirs the pot to make competition which I love about him because it makes friendly competition for people to bowl against others that they've never met and have a great time as I've seen first hand as well. John King drinks off the clock! I've only seen him drink whenever his shift is over, never during. And Archie...thats my right hand man. He has a way with words that I could see how some may not like the sarcasm but thats his personality. Any bowling alley would love to have a man like this that has 40 years knowledge in the bowling industry. He's never been unprofessional that I've seen or encountered and livens up the place if anything. I've been here more in the last 6 months more than honestly probably anyone and everyone can vouch for that. And to be honest 6 months ago I knew known of these people but over time I've established relationships with everyone. If you have a personal vendetta take it up with the person don't use this site to bring down others. You may feel more comfortable at the craigslist rant and rave or something but use this site for its intention and let people enjoy bowling. With that being said I am still up for some friendly competition. Lets set it up.

Comment Date: 4/15/2010 Name: DT
Just to all, I worked with Mark and Archie for almost two years and I never saw Archie drink on the clock and you try walking around with gout... not fun. Those two are classy guys and deserve the respect that they earned.

I cant believe all the nasty negative comments on here. Anchor lanes Rock!! I spend alot of time here with my family. Its a bowling alley people. Do you have nothing better to do with your time then write such negative stuff? I think the staff is always friendly and polite.

Comment Date: 4/14/2010 Name: Guru
The things you people are saying on here are ridiculous. If anyone has an negative experience at Anchor Lanes take it up with the management personally I am sure they will do everything possible to satisfy you. We are all in the business of keeping our customers happy and don't need to be playing these childish games. As for the real people that use this site to evaluate a business be aware that these falsifications are not represintative of the real Anchor Lanes.

Comment Date: 4/14/2010 Name: Current Employee
Let me guess the former employee got fired from Anchor so now they are trying to get even with current employees by speading viscous lies about them. I mean really come on and tell the truth it will set you free and probably make you feel better about your self. Liars rot in hell.

Comment Date: 4/14/2010 Name: Longtime Anchor Customer
Re: former employee I've always noticed the utmost professionalism and high quality customer service at Anchor, which I see as them setting the standard for the Columbia metropolitan area. I've noticed this and have talked to both Archie and John during this so called "drinking on the job" and this is happening post-shift while relaxing. Have you never gone somewhere after a long shift and had a few drinks? Yeah.. I thought so. I know this company and I know that the company lanes (AMF) doesn't care about this. I wouldn't go back to Lexington from the last time I bowled there. It seems to me that you are just a little pissed off about getting fired from this center. You, "former employee," obviously could not hang with the best awarded bowling center in the area. Next time you start name dropping you should realize the following that this center has, especially after Mr King has started working here and really turned it around.

Comment Date: 4/13/2010 Name: Shannon
you know it stikes me as odd that so many people have so many negative things to say when they dont really know all the details. i worked for AMF for 3 1/2 years and am currently working at anchor and have been for the past 2 years. ive worked with archie, john and mark for a number or years and all i can say is that people need to get their facts straight before they make outlandish comments. saying that mark is an idiot is an ignorant thing to say. and as for the comment about "gout my a**" ive seen the needle holes in his knee from where hes had it drained and how swollen his knee gets. hes a great manager and i wouldnt want to work with anyone else. and they do NOT drink on the job. john and archie drink when they are OFF the clock. i, myself, have joined them before on my days off. plus, this is supposed to be where people state how their experience at each center was not to talk trash. if you have an issue with the way some employees are you need to take that up with the general manager or the owners. mark has even made it clear that he would be glad to talk to people on the phone or through email to resolve any problems.

Comment Date: 4/13/2010 Name: Mark Melton
To the Nameless FORMER Employee, Like this great man I know always says you have to "I.T.I. - Ignore The Ignorant" AP. Attacking the reputation and livelihood of my employees and I is a serious thing. Making accusations behind a nameless post on the internet really says a lot about about your credibility as a person. Obviously you think you have a axe to grind and you are entitled to your opinion. Everyone has one and some of us are one, if you know what I mean. Maybe the gout will indeed attack your backside - Then maybe you will know what it feels like. Its not any fun not knowing if you are going to be able to walk when you wake up in the morning. Its a hereditary disease. Also, please excuse me for having a hobby outside the four walls of the bowling center. Maybe Gout and Golf were just good reasons not to be around such a great former nameless employee like you. Have a nice day.

Comment Date: 4/13/2010 Name: Anonymous
I don't know what your problem is with these people or this center. It has always been a pleasant place to bowl and has some of the best equipment in the state. You must have had your own problems there or you would still be employed. Good luck to you and to all that bowl at Anchor Lanes.

Comment Date: 4/13/2010 Name: Another Former Employee
Well, to the "other" former employee that wants to stir up *&^$, WHY are YOU a FORMER employee? You should just sign your name, as everyone knows who YOU are! John and Archie, and Me, and YOU have all sat around and had a few "adult" beverages after work...We work hard, we like to kick back and have a good time...I have never seen any of the above mentioned individuals ever partake while on the clock...Jobs are too scare now to even try something that will cause someone to get fired... As for Johnny, I know what you're saying about some friendly rivalry....Jeez, why does everyone have to take things so personally...If you're a good bowler, great...If you're a great bowler, then shut the hell up, join the PBA, and leave the rest of us alone!

Comment Date: 4/11/2010 Name: former employee
Archie does drink on the job and so does john king i used to work there i saw it and mark is an idiot too all he does is talk on his cell phone about golfing and complain about his leg hurting gout my ass just an excuse to not work thats why he got fired from park lanes

Comment Date: 4/9/2010 Name: Johnny Paschal
Micheal, I am a nice guy. I want bowling to flourish in all the centers. We are just having some friendly banter between centers but I guess you didn't pick up on that. Also, if you go back and check the winners of the city tournament and the city match game tournament over the last few years you will find that the most of the winners have come from Anchor Lanes. I was just trying to stir up some friendly competition and perhaps get some more people to enter the city tournament which is at JC's Lexington Bowl. I have never gone on here and dogged out any other bowling center. I just stated my opinion.

Every now and then I look at the comments made about people on these sites. I have passed through this center on several occasions. I must say that this bald black guy that everyone had been so hard on has been nothing less then professional. I would never want to go any where I did not feel like talking to anyone as I have with the man being ridiculed. He understands the business and he goes above and beyond to make everyone comfortable. If you have a problem with how he handles situations then maybe you should put yourself in his shoes. Keep up the good work big bald balck man. Put yourself in his shoes.

Let me start off by saying that I love anchor lanes and have been bowling there for the last 2 years. Working in customer service myself its clear that you are not telling the story the way it actually happened, I see this on a daily basis and its not hard to recognize. I will even guess the day that you saw him "drinking while working" was a friday, he goes to the bar AFTER his shift ENDS and drinks a little with the mechanic. I know this because I have hung out with him. Don't forget to notice the key words "after he finishes his shift". Archie is a great guy and has been nothing but nice to us. Keep up the great work anchor lanes staff.

I love anchor lanes and everything about it...oh except for one thing, the big black bald idiot at the counter who drinks on the job and acts like a complete a** face to everyone. He is the worst thing about the bowling center if only he didn't work there. The only thing he is good for is breaking up fights. Therefore he should just be a bouncer and not a manager. Not a single one of my friends that go there like him at all. Drinking on the job he should be fired anyways, how could you just let that go?

I will never, ever, go to this place again. I had some bitter, crotchety old man taking my payment, and when I misunderstood him, because the loud music and banter between customers drowned him out, he was very rude and patronizing about it. He asked who was playing, and I pointed to the people behind me and said "these guys", instead of telling me he wanted names, he shook his head at me like i was an idiot, and loudly read the names in a rude tone. The thing is i never even liked bowling, i just went because my friends wanted to. I like it even less now

Comment Date: 3/19/2010 Name: Mark Melton
Thank you both for your comments and concerns. I will address the issues at hand and make the necessary changes in policy. Currently when off the clock employees of the center are allowed to drink in the center. That will not change. Drinking while on the clock will not be permitted. For the record there has never been any problems steaming from this issue at all. Archie is a very capable and smart manager and his performance has never been in question. I feel sure we will not have this problem again. Once again thanks for your comments and concerns. Also know that I can be called directly if you have any other questions or concerns. Mark

Thanks for the quick response and I must say you have a very nice establishment. I've been a few times since then and am considering joining a league in the summer or fall. Like I said I've only been a few times and I did not see the manager there unless he's been there when I haven't but I saw his picture on your wall. His name is Archie. I hate to be a stickler but I do feel that the only way to fix a problem is to address it, especially if its a place you enjoy going. Hope that helps you out and fixes the problem.

To the female bowler...I know exactly what your talking about I come here every so often also to find the manager/s drinking but was unsure about whether or not they were on the "clock" or not. Archie is is his name I think the bald black man and the mechanic guy I forgot his name.

So this is my first time checking out this site. I like to give reviews and feedback on places I've been to...so here we go. Came by here for the first time a few weeks ago with a friend of mine that's on a league. Very nice place. Very friendly people. And although as I've been told it will change, I loved that I could enjoy a drink and a cigarette and root on my friend. A lot of lanes here which I like so that I could probably get a lane during non league times. Very well kept place for the unfortunes of our economy. Now with that being said one thing that I completely disliked is this...I was introduced to a/the manager who was real nice and funny but a little bit of a smart ass but hey sometimes that's peoples personality so that wasn't a big deal but the thing that got me was that I'm looking around and I see him taking shots with a group of guys. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I was thinking at first maybe he was off the clock and could enjoy it if he was but then he goes back to working right after that. As he takes the shot he moved as if to cover so that no one saw this. I was appalled by this. I'm no saint but I know one thing I can't have a drink while at my job and there are a lot of people who would love to but can't because it isn't what you do at the work place. Me being in a management position myself thought that 1 that is a horrible example for the employees you manage 2 it looks very bad to customers i.e. ME and 3 it makes the place look like anything goes there. I would definitely get this together if I ran this place because that is very disappointing for a place that is very enjoyable and well kept to have this type of behavior but I would give this place 3 out of 5 stars.

Foy you couldn't avg 190 on a sport pattern you couldn't adjust to anything outside your anchor house shot comfort zone. keep firing them up 5-10 anywhere in there is money. ever tried to hit 25? guess you don't have the rotation for that. i'll meet you anyday for a challenge match you name the place you name the time. heck i'll even try my LUCK at anchor!

Comment Date: 1/9/2010 Name: Ken Foy
Really, why don't y'all post with your real name? Are you embarrassed and ashamed by what you post? This is getting out of hand! Lexington has the rep. for low scoring. Is that bad? Jc does not want to put out an easy scoring condition. All the other centers don't won't to put out a harder condition. Y'all and I mean ALL OF YOU know this. If you think you are a good bowler you should know how to adjust your game to score well on any condition hard or easy. Now as far a center challenge, I'm in. I know for a fact I can come up with 4,5 or 6 bowlers that will bowl as well. What cha say, lets shoe it up and shut it up. Jc and Mark would probably donate the linage to see this made for t.v. event. Hahaha They have my numbers. Who's in?

Comment Date: 1/7/2010 Name: average joe
well let me just say i bowl at jcs and the shot changes more than the weather.in one league we have bowled 17 weeks and the shot has been diff every week im sry but thats not bowling.i agree with mark lets set up a challenge match 3 games at anchor and 3 games at jcs.

Comment Date: 12/31/2009 Name: Mark Melton
Come on guys putting down each other isn't helping anything. For those that don't know JC has replaced his wood lanes. The scoring conditions have to be better. As for damaging a bowling ball - that can happen anywhere. From the sound of things it sounds like we need to work up a friendly challenge match. Let me know if you are interested.

Comment Date: 12/29/2009 Name: DT
Why go to all the way JCs? Just go into any parking lot, throw a couple of shots and your ball will look like you just bowled at JCs. This coming city tournament at JCs will be the lowest turnout ever because nobody wants their equipment chopped up and the owner sets down an easier shot for the weekend his house bowlers are there.

Hey true bowler, there is also some side action going on on every other monday at 9:30 after league. Its a 4 game scratch sweeper. If you love your 210 come put it and your money up and lets see how far you go. Its a $30 entry. Don't forget ANYONE can average 220 even you.

Comment Date: 12/5/2009 Name: Dont be Scared!
We are hosting the BIG Dawg Tournament the Sunday after Christmas. So don't be scared to bring your little 210 accross town and bowl. If you were a real bowler you would be bowling on Mondays at Anchor in the shootout league. Bar none the best competition in town.

i am so tired of so called bowlers from this house always talking about how good they are and average about 220.ok fine now come back down to reality my normal average is around 210 and i can go to tournaments and bowl my average.you guys cant even go across town and average 200.

I bowl league here because I love the people. However, the place needs some updating quickly. Just replacing the carpet would do wonders for the centers looks. From what I can tell this is the best run center in town. Just needs a face lift. Keep up the good work.

I bowl at Anchor Lanes and have never had any problems. I've run my own business for years and understand that problems arise and you deal with them ASAP-sometimes not to the customers satisfaction because todays society is one that expects results NOW, this VERY SECOND! To "Frustrated Parent", you should know that alcoholic beverages are served in an establishment such as this, as well as smoking. You might consider NOT allowing your under age child to be out that late with NO ADULT SUPERVISION :-) To Anonymous, you desperately want attention, don't ya??? Have a nice day!

I had an opportunity to bowl there a few days ago. the first time I've bowled in this house and I loved it. The lanes are in great shape. I love the house shot. After a few frames, I found where I needed to stand and well I started striking. Lowest game was 180 and toped out at 230ish. I don't like to boast, but not bad for someone who never bowled there before. I hope I can return in the near future.

The service here is outstanding compared to other bowling alleys I have been to in columbia...and as far as the lanes being to "slick" you my friend should do your research seeing as how a bowling ball will not react on a dry lane and that is why they put danger and warning signs at the foul line...the only thing I believe the Anchor Lanes owners need to do is spruce up the outside of their building it looks like a warehouse from the street with no sign on the front of the building, other than that I will continue to bowl here for the exceptional service and good times I enjoy here every other weekend.

The lanes are to slick? Are you kidding me? Whew what ever

Comment Date: 6/5/2008 Name: Tye W
I won't be back. I didn't like the service, the center is dirty and smells like smoke. The lanes were way to slick and the girl in the bar had an attitude. Be nice to your patrons. Good luck Mark.

I've bowled at Anchor Lanes for 12 years now and I am still pleased with the way they operate. Mark has done wonders to the Bowling Center ever since the first day he walked in as the new GM. I really hope you guys go check it out and even talk to Mark and see how cool he is. The staff is nice, the prices are reasonable, the lanes are kept up with very nicely, and its very enjoyable each and every time I go. Thank you Mark!

It has been a week now and Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous has not contacted me. I guess if the accusations made were founded they would have no problem voicing them over the phone. We have surprise service evaluations done each month. They rate us in the areas of Telephone, Building Maintenance, Customer Service counter, Bar, Snack Bar, Amusements and Shopper Opinion. Year to date our avg. is 91.5%, which is up over the last (196) shops. We are by no means perfect however I know you will not find another group of people who care more about the success of the center. Anchor lanes will continue to be a great place to have a fun time for the whole family.

Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous, I would be glad to sit and talk with you about any issues you may have with the center or the staff. Please contact me at 803-361-5650.

Since the new management took over in December, this place has really went downhill. The place is a mess and his management staff under him is worthless, especially the bar manager. You cannot get the bar manager to pry his eyes off of the young girls long enough to assist you with a problem. This used to be a nice family place but until they clean it up we will not be coming back.

I became the GM as of Dec. 2007. I have been in Bowling Mangement for 17 years. This place is a work in progress. The key word being PROGRESS. We are continually trying to improve our center. I am willing to listen and solve any issues that may come up. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you any problems. 803-732-7880 #4 & #1 for the desk - leave me a message if I am not here & I will get back with you ASAP. We are in the process of remodeling the center & when all the projects are completed it will be awesome again.

Last night, my child and her friends went to Anchor Lanes looking for a good time, but instead they got bad service, a grouchy front desk man, and not much fun. There was not enough shoes for everyone to wear, but yet they were still charged for shoes, while they had to bowl in their socks. There were underage kids drinking and smoking in the building. My child went on a Friday when it was Neon night, but did not bowl after 11 o'clock and was still charged the Neon night price. The man at the front desk also said that he wouldn't give my child and her friends their change back when they paid. I wanted to inform you of this. My child, her friends, and I will not be returning to this bowling alley.

The building condition is horrible. There is holes in the walls and it's dirty. The karaoke man is boring. The bumpers in the lanes broke when i went there, and they didnt even help to fix it when I called over the intercom. :( not going back.

First time there tonight. Won't be going back anytime soon. Wouldn't honor my league prices for practice games. Lanes are dry and have a terrible hook. (my daughter bowls a straight ball and it hooked.) Nice computer system. Love the antics! Folks not real friendly to a new face.

My x-boyfriend Paul Williams and I have bowled at Anchor many times and have had nothing but positive experiences. TIM is the BEST! He and Jason makes everyone feel welcome and helps in anyway they can. Keep up the great work Tim and Jason! Smiles....

i love to go bowling. Anchor lanes is wonderful. I only had one fall out with the food service which was the chicken tenders and it wasn't cooked very well but for the most part great prices and good service. If you like to bowl i would recommend Anchor lanes of Irmo!

For the most part, I enjoy Anchor Lanes. My one big, huge complaint is the smoke. It would be nice if there were a few nights and a few leagues that could be smoke-free!

We attended a birthday party for one of my daughters friends and had a great experience. The staff was friendly and the children really enjoyed themselves. If my daughter chooses to have her birthday party there I'll support her decision. I recommend them.

Ok where do I begin. The bowling center has gone down hill fast. the customer service there is a joke to the employees. they sit there and look at you like your stupid. The place is dirty and stinks. there manager Jim has a problem with being to over friendly with women that sit in the lounge and he is nasty. I don't like the center and I don't recommend to any one. Watch out girls you have to many friendly ones there.

I recently visited anchor lanes while i was there i noticed that the customer service is rapidly getting worse I used to really enjoy sitting in the bar and bowling in my league i even enjoyed comming on the nights when i dont bowl in league I have noticed how dirty the center is and how over friendly the male employees are with girls even teenage girls I wouldnt let my teenage daughter bowl alone at that bowling center my overall view is not good

I have bowled in this establishment just recently and I must say that the experience was both pleasant and enlightening. So much that my children has asked that we schedule there next party there. I too am in the customer service industry, I know from first hand situations that there are things that can and do go wrong. However, the staff was extremely polite even in light of adversities. I do not see how there can be so many negative thoughts about this place when we all know that there are many places that are definitely worse. To the staff and management there I thank you for a wonderful night of fun and dancing.

I realize that lately there have been many concerns and several unhappy customers who have visited Anchor lanes. My best advice is that if you have a problem, let someone at the front counter know immediately so that they can begin working to fix these problems. If they don't know their customers' concerns, they can't fix them. I know from experience that if you make your concern known, the employees will do their best to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

I used to love to bowl at Anchor Lanes. Recently, I've had many bad experiences. I've had only one out of my last eight bowling experiences run without lane problems. The employees are lifeless it seems. They have no enthusiasm and aren't very pleasant to deal with. The food in the Snack Bar is absolutely horrible, and the guy with the mustache could care less about a customer's concerns. The appearance of the bowling center has gone down hill. It used to be a beautiful bowling center, but now everything is getting ignored. There is dirt everywhere. You'll see trash on the floor as you walk around. The approaches are grimey and sticky. There is dust all over the walls. The ceiling tiles are in horrible shape, and some are missing with leaking water. The lane conditions get worse and worse. And the machines rarely seem to function at all. I don't know if the mechanics left with the owner change or not, but something needs to be addressed. How well I bowl is what brings me back to a bowling center, along with the lanes running smoothly. It's not fun to wait 5 minutes for a problem to be fixed every 3 or 4 frames. This bowling center used to be a wonderful place to bowl, but ever since it changed management, it's completely died. No one cares about their customers anymore. I don't mind paying a little more for my games, but what is my money going towards? It's definitely not being used to fix anything. If anything, they should lower the prices since their customer service, and upkeep of the center has dramatically decreased. I hate to drive to Park Lanes, especially with their different lane conditions every night, or across town to Royal Z, one of the oldest looking centers in town...but at least their customer service is better. I really hope the owners of Anchor Lanes wake up and do something to bring their standard of bowling back up to where it was. I don't like to spend my money where I don't feel appreciated! And one of my last pet peeves is when I try to call the center to ask for the manager, or ask about prices...it's nothing but a recording. I will not play tag through a million recorded menus just to talk to someone. I will take my business elsewhere.

I just hate to go into a bowling center and have the staff laugh at you just because you have a birth defect. I can' t help the way I look, and thats not funny. I say lets ban together and show these people just how rude deformed people can be.

This place really s*cks now...I hear that the new owners are going broke........

Comment Date: 3/10/2005 Name: Anonymous
I used to love bowling at Anchor Lanes but since the new owners have taken over, it has gone down hill. The gutter caps look like they are never dusted. Some of the gutters are rusting or at least that's what it looks like. The lanes are nasty....dirt line at foul line from machine that oils the lanes. The approaches are always nasty....sticky. Half of the time the machines are not even working properly or it is not scoring correctly. Lots of bowling balls seem to get damaged by the machines. I think that some of the employees that were fired were for good reason...but others were given the boot just to be mean. I feel that the owners have no concerns about the bowlers and is only out to make a buck! Cutting cost other ways would be better than letting your center go down the drain like Anchor is doing. I bowl in several leagues at Anchor but do not plan to bowl there again next year, if I can help it.

Well - I used to LOVE Anchor Lanes... I grew up there, my whole family did. But it has gone down hill in the last 6 months. New management hasn't figured out how to manage the place efficiently and it saddens me on a daily basis. Anchor Lanes was built to be different from other bowling alleys. It is supposed to be a bowling center, the best of all bowling facilities, a place to be proud of. For some reason certain key employers were fired and a few less reliable people were kept on in their place, I guess to save a dollar or two. And for some reason we can't get our lanes to work on a daily basis and some of the night/weekend staff seem to be on a power trip. I can only hope that the new management takes a turn for the better and I can be proud of Anchor Lanes again one day soon.
