Wellbread is right, AMF is a BAD company. However New York City is the problem (BLOOMBERG) as the property value is worth much more than in other cities. Bloomberg has rezoned many areas of the city for Luxury high rise condos. Jamaica has been rezoned. Add the fact that NY has high property taxes and rents if you don't own the property. I believe Van Wyck's property was owned by them. AMF must have mad BIG TIME $$$ for that property. Also as Wellbread said Bowling is not as popular in NY and maybe some other places as it could be. The other problem is AMF, they did not care much about Van Wyck and never put anything but Second hand equipment in it. Other alleys were reformed into beautiful looking alleys with new machines and new automatic scorers. Van Wyck had the same automatic scoring for as long as I can remember. It could easily have been updated. Never trust any AMF alley if you bowl in one. AMF can close it at any time. BEWARE.

Very sad to hear that Van Wyck has closed down. This was one of my favorite lanes to pratice in when preparing for tournaments. Really was not aware of how much of a CANCER AMF orginization has been to bowling! Sounds like AMF only interest is to buy up lanes in order to own the property they sit on to eventually open some bar, restrauant, etc. Really sad to know that the number one team sport in this country is being dismantled in this way - I guess if bowling had the kind of backing and money that's poured into golf this would would never happen...

Jose, If that is the future of bowling then bowling will die off. The economy will stop people from going,as they cannot afford those prices. AMF is hurting bowling BIG TIME and Brunswick is no bargain either.

herb, unfortunately those yuppieville centers are the wave of the future. known as "boutique centers" they are really glorified bar/restaurants with bowling as an afterthought. Sad, but that is the trend the industry is following.

To John, I heard the same thing, AMF is closing or will close most of their alleys in time. They will have these non-league antiseptic alleys called 300 alleys. Ultra expensive for games and foof and liquor. Yuppieville personified. Find a non AMF alley if you can.

Dont know about you but im going anywhere but AMF, or at least check it out to make sure they own the property. I hear they are losing interest in centers that they have to rent and will probably eventually close down the majority of them similar to what they did here.

AMF has closed this alley without warning, beware bowling in amf alleys. AMF doesn't care or mean fun. They are just mean. AMF does not care about you, remember that.

AMF just stinks, angry bowler is right. AMF does not know how to run Bowling alleys. AMF pushes high prices, especially at the food counter. AMF does not care about the league bowler, they think open bowlers(non-league) bowlers are the future. I have news for them, league bowlers are the LIFE BLOOD of any alley. Take that AMF, Go close another alley you don't know how to run anyway.

If anything the closing of van wyck shows how little AMF really cares about bowlers and bowling in general. My league is all paid up and they don't even give us the courtesy of keeping it open for another 3 weeks to let us finish the season out. I will never bowl at another AMF center and I encourage any real bowler to do the same, they are ruining the buisiness of running bowling alleys trying to control every place while at the same time making their houses unpleasant to leagues. Boycott AMF!!!
