Get on Facebook, they have a page for Redwood City called "Redwood City Memories" Comment Date: 2/25/2012 Name: Darla M. Hi, does anyone know how to connect with...

Hi, does anyone know how to connect with people from Mel's Bowl 1970'S BOWLING LEAGUES in Redwood City? Trying to find people who bowled with Lois Mae Morris. Thanks, Darla {Sorry, no personal email addresses allowed - B2U Staff}

I have been in Mel's once. Place had a nice "old school" feel. I love to bowl, but seriously, how many Californians really bowl? They would rather be biking, hiking, camping. Bowling is a great sport that really needs some promotion. Very sad to hear they are tearing down Mel's for apartments. But the area does need improvement, this apartment complex will be run down in no time...look how people treat the rest of Redwood City. RIP Mel's.

I just heard about the upcoming closure. It's sad to see another vintage bowling center lose out to more profitable real estate ventures. I've only been in the area for a few years, but the staff there has treated me well, and the old wooden lanes were always well-maintained. Thank you everyone for your excellent service!

I've just learned that Mel's will be closing in early May, and I feel very sad about this. For even though I moved from Redwood City to Sacramento in 2004, I bowled leagues and tournaments and thousands of games of practice and spent thousands of hours in that bowling center over a thirty year period. And even though I knew this day would come, I'm still awfully sorry to see it. After Mel's closes, there will be only three bowling centers I know of along a stretch of the Peninsula from Sunnyvale to Millbrae that used to have ten bowling centers, and one wonders how long one or more of them will be able to stay in business. What a sad development for a sport I've loved for over 45 years! RIP Mel's Bowl.

As a third generation Redwood City Native, Mel's has seen better days. After they tore down the Woodside Bowl a couple decades ago, Mels became the only local option (Bel Mateo Bowl is a 20 minute drive and the place is terrible). As much as I hate to see it go, Mel's is on the way out. I say go and bowl...don't expect too much...and you will enjoy yourself. Given how demographics have changed in this area, once Mel's is gone, local bowling will cease to exist...likely forever.

I have been at Mel's Bowl my whole life, from the time my parent bowled there and I was in the nursery til the time I took a break from bowling in my late 40's. I'm looking to coming back, I've missed bowling alot.

I'm trying to find out when it was first built. I'm guessing around 59' or 60 but I haven't been able to find anything on-line on this. I too remember the small rooms with pool tables not sure when they were taken out.

I agree! The staff is rude but I love the bartender. Not the manager(he's rude or too serious???) but the nice redheaded lady , whose name I only remember when I'm drinking. Good times!! now lets go to, the H.P across the street!!

I grew up in this joint in the '70s, bowled a 300 game there in '73 at age 16 and was a local celebrity of sorts for a while. The joint is almost completely unchanged in the last 35 years, and that's not a good thing. There's some kind of rhubarb going on right now over ownership of the land, and it's quite possible that Mel's might not be around much longer, which would be a cryin' shame... though in its current state, I doubt it would be missed much. It desperately needs somebody with big bucks to come along, secure a new lease on the land, and buy the joint from AMF and turn it into a state-of-the-art entertainment center. There are no bowling alleys nearby, and I think it could be really successful if done right.

I slipped and fell down the alley, the alley is too slippery. I did not like it. I want less slip on the alley and softer pins.

Comment Date: 10/26/2009 Name: Robert Redwood City
The lanes are well maintained. The price is $2.49 per line Sunday night, not that expensive when you consider that Coconut Bowl in Reno charges $2.50 til 5:30pm and $4.00 in the evenings. I have found lanes are always available so I suspect they may not be open very much longer. IS BOWLING DYING AS A PASS TIME?

Yeah, I agree with Michael, that stretch of Redwood City has seen better times. Mel's bowl is on a very expensive piece of property and they never know when their lease is going to get yanked, so why would they spend tons of money making the place look good for people who are already complaining that the games are too expensive? Hello?, you live in one of the most expensive areas in the United States. Move to Reno if you want cheap bowling. As far as the staff goes, sure, they're a little rough around the edges, but they do a great job facilitating the mechanics of what you are there for. Be happy that you still have a local bowling option with lanes made of real wood. It would be absolutely impossible to replicate Mel's Bowl in this day and age.

Reading all these comments is disturbing. Everything is expensive these days, and yes its run down, but everything in that area of Redwood City is a mess....remember, were talking Redwood City..and I am speaking from a third generation native perspective...not some Jonny come lately pitch..stop complaining and bowl...

This place is 2 expensive and the people that work there look like bums and are rude, would never go 2 this dump again!

was an awesome place to bowl. alley has been runned down, staff s*cks. oh your ball got stuck, you wont see it again. you throw your ball on your lane, and some goofball throws his ball on a pair next to you, while the rake is sweeping his lanes, you get blamed for it. Mels really s*cks. Bring back Woodside Bowl where Bank Of America is now

I have been league bowling since the early 60's. It was a great place to come and have a great dinner in the resturant. They even had a day care so we could drop off our kids and bowl a couple of games on the weekend. Now we cannot get any young people to join leagues because they have nowhere to leave their kids for a couple of hours. The help leaves alot to be desired. The place has become really shody, needs new carpeting and overall updating.

You know growing up my whole 28 years in redwood city the place has changed a lot. There are very few things to do in Redwood City for teens and young adults too do and its sad to say that this day in age with the economy so bad that its $50 plus dollars to go out with a few friends and bowl a few games and have a bite to eat. The prices are way to high and if you would think that they would invest in to making the alley better. Palo Alto bowl is awesome and the one over in Pacifica is really nice. They need to invest money into making it a more fun experiance maybe some pool talbles, and darts, and some better video games. And more affordable prices so that the average Joe can take his family out and not have to get a loan from the bank just to do it! LOL that being said maybe someone should listen and really try and make an effort for renovations and making it more of a whole experiance than a half a** boring bowling alley. Also do agree with what the others have said about the staff there, they all look like they've been around the block a few times and a few seem to be under the influence of some sort of drugs. They have been rude on more than one occasion and some even demeaning in the way they speak to you. They are employed to do a job which involves customer service and if the only qualification you have to have to get a job there is being a rude, uneducated, drug user then i think its time to change the expectation and lets have some fun again!

Bowled tonight 2/3/08. "Sheri" at the front desk decided she wanted to close an hour early (10pm in stead of 11pm). She was in quite a hurry. I think she knew the kids on one of the lanes towards then end because SHE KEPT SHOUTING AT THEM OVER THE STUPID SOUND SYSTEM FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. IT'S REALLY ANNOYING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS TO FORCE THEM TO LISTEN TO THAT $###. Upon cashing out our party went to pay. Got an attitude because we wanted to pay in 2's (couples). Then she overcharged the last couple by 1/2 a game. Fine. After the last couple paid she shorted them $0.03 of their $12.53. They asked for the remainder of their change. Got an attitude over that as well. So let me get this right, you want to overcharge them by 1/2 a game but you can't give exact change?? Will never go to this place again. You just lost 10-16 potential weekend bowlers (occasional weekday too). Idiots.

The management team is really bad, they'll quote you prices depending on the type of person you are, the way you act, and the clothes you wear. The staff will taunt you. I will never go there again!

I left my ball in the locker. Can someone tell Carlo's that he can use the entire locker and toss my ball down El Camino. Loved this place growing up hanging behind the brick wall and throwing stuff down the lane when Mom and Dad were bowling the fireman's league. I lost so many superballs in that house. Don't get me wrong, I like new stuff. But, in a strange way, it's kind of awesome that Mel's bowl is still the same.

I used to bowl here when I was in high school in the mid 60's - the exterior today is exactly as it was back then, even down to the "Mel's" sign in front. In its day, it was a great place to hang out ... saturday kid's leagues featured a hot dog/soda "special" for 20 cents. It's sad to drive by and see how age has taken its toll. Haven't been inside since it became AMF. The old Brunswick lanes (before the Brunswick upgrade) were good, and at one time, in the 60's, there even was a small pool hall inside.

Mels, USE TO BE a really nice bowling center. Once AMF took over, it went down hill. I grew up in that center, made a lot friend there. It kills me to see how bad things are there right now. Please go back to the old Mels. The Mels, in the mid 80's to early 90's Big Mike

Bowling alley needs lead promoters! Need new management because it is not managed the right way. And....the cocktails are overpriced!

Alley is a D-I-V-E/ Prices are too high. Food is OK, though. Needs a serious REMODEL!

The food here is awesome!
