|Bowling alley slaying latest of 5

For the past four years, James Shamp was a dedicated worker at Canoga Park Bowl, the kind of employee who came in early to get a head start on his duties, who was loved by all the keglers.
Even in his last act, he was working hard, taking out the trash about 8:30 p.m. Monday night.
Then, inexplicably, two men in a car opened fire on the 48-year-old married father of two in the bowling alley parking lot, killing him. On Tuesday, those who knew him were dumbfounded.
"He was one of the nicest people I've ever met," Canoga Park Bowl owner Gene Giegoldt said. "James was loved by everyone."
Shamp's death was one of five homicides in the west San Fernando Valley in the past two weeks, including four in two days, an alarming trend after a relatively quiet year.
"Definitely an uptick in what I would like to say was a successful year," said Los Angeles police Lt. Steve Sambar of the West Valley Division.
Besides Shamp, the other recent victims were Samuel Romeo, 76, who was shot in the 22000 block of Welby Way in West Hills, an unidentified man in his 40s stabbed to death in Reseda and an unnamed 21-year-old man who died Sunday after being shot Friday in Winnetka by an acquaintance who was arrested, police said.
On Dec. 10, Rodolfo Castaneda, 23, was shot to death after he came home from work and was sitting in his apartment complex courtyard in Canoga Park.
In the Romeo case, police have no suspects, and
West Valley detectives actually had to call in robbery-homicide investigators from downtown L.A. because there have been so many killings recently in the West Valley, Sambar said.
Until this week, homicides in the West Valley were up over last year, but mostly because of the February standoff that left an LAPD SWAT team member dead.
In that case, a man shot his father and two brothers before killing Officer Randal Simmons. Take away that incident and killings in the area were even with last year's six.
Shamp had worked at Canoga Park Bowl at Vanowen Street and Winnetka Avenue since December 2004. He would have turned 49 Monday.
"He helped with all the banquets and the birthday parties," Giegoldt said. "He would go out of his way to help people. Everyone who bowls in the leagues knew him. This was just senseless."
By noon Tuesday, the bowling alley - which in its 50 years had never seen anything like this - had taken hundreds of calls asking about Shamp, he said.
"He was a really great guy," co-worker Jason Kalmanson said. "Outgoing. Very friendly. He always had a positive attitude."
A family who e-mailed the Daily News took that sentiment a step further.
"He was a great man who influenced anyone that he came in contact with, who was more than just a friend and someone that you could trust your kids with," the message read. "Someone that you could be thrilled to call more than just a friend but more like a family member. Those of us who knew him will forever have him in our hearts. We hope that we could only be half as great of a person as he was."

I would like to comment on the brutal and nonsenical murder of my good friend James Shamp this last monday (12-23-08)at canoga park bowl.James was a great friend and a very hard worker who leaves behind a best friend wife and 2 loving sons JamesJr and Sherman who were a constant source of happiness in his all to short life. There are rumors of racial involvement in his death,I want people to know that is the last thing in the world James would want ,I happen to be white and James was black yet we all considered ourselves to be family. I would have taken that bullet for James,He was the kind of person everyone loved and he would have taken that bullet for me or anyone else he loved. He was that kind of person. To his family I wish peace and understanding, not all people are bad ther is so much more good than evil,James knew that Love Billie

|If you don't like things at Canoga, try Rocket Lanes or even Woodlake.
Canoga is just a scary place to be. Bad area, bad attitudes, just bad all around. |

These ratings seem very skewed to me. The alley is open 24 hours which is nice but service is terrible, place is trashy, and lanes are below average. I would definitely not recommend the place.

I had recently reseigned as one of the main bartenders at canoga park bowl after 24 years and I wanted to say goodbye and thank you to all my friends and loyal customers I did not get to see before I left,it has been my pleasure to get to know all of you and your families over the years. My friend Diana whom was let go after 30 years of loyal service to the company was the main reason I chose to leave, she has had continuing health problems and is still under a doctors care.I hope to see you all again but in case that doesent happen take care.Love Billie

the only time people are rude is when you dont have I.D or you give to a minor. Or if you have been rude to. Give them a break would you really like to work this kind of job? where everyday someone yells at you, everyday someone brings in outside alcohol, everyday people are consistantly rude. It take patience it really does.

as far as waitresses being rude, there is only one. I guess she's been there the longest. I'm not sure of her name, but she,s definatly the oldest and haggiest. If she serves you do'nt give her a single dime.

the people working there are for sure rude. it was the only place open 24 hrs so we couldn't go anywhere else. i did see someone from the bar actually take a drink out of the guy next to us hands, without a warning or anything.

I disagree with the negative comments regarding the lounge and the ladies working there. I have been going there for several years and have never exerienced anything negative from the ladies working in the lounge. My experience has been a good one each time I visit. They are professional and friendly. I have, however, seen many rude customers. If they are rude to the ladies working there, they are treated in a no nonsense manner as they deserve.

Not a fun place since there is no cosmic bowling on the weekends. The workers in the bar don't really seem to care about customers as they were chatting amongst themselves sitting at the end of the counter. Alot of scary people hanging around the bowling entrance made us feel uncomfortable.

Service is not this place's strong point. I did not see a lane server that the counter said there was, so we went into the bar to get some drinks. We had to wait at least 5 minutes for the bartender to turn her head away from the TV to help us. I guess watching TV and playing with gifts are more important than customers. We did find the lane server in the bar watching TV too. Not recommended. Try Corbin Bowl which is close by.

Didn't care for the place. Went to the bar and the drinks were bad, the service was bad. Waited for my drink for 15 minutes. Felt ignored, took 15 minutes just to get service and there was not a lot of people there. Bartenders too busy having conversations. Corbin Bowl much better.

Bartenders are horrible. They don't pay attention to their customers. Most of the time they are watching TV or reading a magazine. They are rude and make it unpleasant to be there.

I work there. Very 70's ish. Low-grade customers. Low-grade feel. The food smells like a crappy diner. The bar stinks. Very dingy. No one cares about you, and the owner wants to make off as much as he can from you. So steal this shoe. Other than that, what better place to score coke than a 24-hour bowling alley?
