Big Gobler bowling hopes feed 1,500 homeless By ERIKA I. RITCHIE 2009-11-11 08:34:13 LAKE FOREST For Treesa Spencer Thanksgiving doesn't exist unless she's feeding those who are less fortunate. Two years ago the 66-year-old Lake Forest woman cried when she watched a news program that showed homeless waiting for food at a soup kitchen only to find a sign on a closed door saying everything was gone. "Something just touched my heart when I saw their struggle," she said. "Some people are very desperate at this time. I want them to know people around them care because this time next year these people will help others." On Saturday, Spencer will host the 2nd Annual Big Gobler Fundraiser a bowling tournament at Forest Lanes Bowling Center where the cost of the entry fee and raffles will help raise money to feed homeless people at the Orange County Rescue Mission this Thanksgiving. Spencer hopes to feed 1,500 this year. Last year she fed more than 600. For a month, Spencer a former professional bowler and now a youth coordinator at Forest Lanes has tirelessly combed South County to get sponsors to donate to the bowling event. Some of the big ticket raffle wins include a golf package for four to play Tijeras Creek Golf Club, motorcycle jackets from Kawasaki Motor Corporation, a grooming and pet health check at Muirlands Animal Hospital and gift cards from lots of other local vendors. This week Spencer hit the bowling alley every night asking league bowlers to buy a raffle ticket. She's already raised more than $900. She aiming to hit her goal, if not exceed it, by the end of the weekend. "In America, it just shouldn't be like this," the retired medical distribution business owner said. "We can certainly afford to help others." And Spencer's generosity doesn't stop at Thanksgiving. During the Christmas season Spencer regularly makes up baskets filled with non-perishable food. She includes a card that says 'from your friend' and puts them into her trunk. When she sees a homeless person on the street, she stops and hands them a basket. "They usually have a big grin because they're so surprised," she said. "You think you're giving you a blessing but they're giving you one because it's surely a blessing to help someone else."

Let's be honest, most of these comments were shilled. The ProShop comment probably came for mtyeh shop itself. The Saddleback Lanes comment probably came from that lane. This is not shilled, it is the unvarnished truth. The lanes are in good shape, the management is getting there; they have yet to manage in a consistent manner with regards to league management. The entire complex is reasonably managed, as opposed to well managed. Pin Machines, Scoring machines work as expected. The alleys rarely cooperate with the bowler. Rental equipement is actually in good condition, shoes look fairly new, rental ball bins are well organized, balls themselves are in good condition. ProShop - Overcrowded with stock, but that is the nature of the beast. The attendent Pro is not oriented to Customer Service, but knows his stuff when you can get his attention. Snack Bar - Best you can get, if you go to the local grocery store for your frozen food selection. They have fresh cook items, but it is a bowling alley snack bar, not haute cuisine. Front Desk - Staff is friendly and competent, if you are renting shoes, or going for open bowling. Administration of Bowling leagues is a challenge, the front desk staff is not empowered to make any decisions with regards to leagues and has been overridden by management on numerous occassions. Management has gone so far as to cancel leagues to accomodate Birthday and private parties during league time. League Management by the Alley Management - Room for lots of improvement. Prize administration should be laid out at the beginning of the leagues season, and followed, not reset and overrridden in the middle of the season, because management neglected to work with the league on the prizes. Management should give the league priority to the alley schedule, once the league is established, no preemption for Private Parties, etc. Bowling leagues are a constant form of revenue, not a preemption from regular schedules.

Don't listen to other people say bad about Forest Lanes because they are non-bowlers and don't know what they are saying. Forest Lanes is a great bowling center and good staff. I know Charlie Kinstler, owner of Forest Lanes very well and he is a great man! He kept all his 5 bowling centers very clean and renovated. I say that Forest Lanes is the most beautiful bowling center than his other 4 bowling centers. Good job, Charlie! I'm bowling in a league and my son is also bowling in league at Forest Lanes. Saddleback Lanes is great bowling center, too and nothing to compare but Saddleback Lanes really needs renovation. Keep it up, Forest Lanes!!! Also, one more thing that Forest Lanes and Charlie should install..... new Brunswick GSX pinsetters and get rid of AMF pinsetters. It will be so cool and like a brand new bowling center! Go for it, Charlie!!

We had our 13 year old daughter's birthday party there last Saturday night and we all had a GREAT time... it was Cosmic Bowling night, which was very cool and the pitchers of beer were at a decent price. We are going back soon. Much better than Saddleback Lanes.

You guys obviously don't go on Monday/Wednesday $1 bowling nights, or Tuesday $0.25 bowling nights.

Forest is doing an amazing remodel. Yes prices can be a bit high, but with all the work they are doing, I can understand why. The PRO SHOP is the best in Orange County - Jeff Carr knows what he's doing and hsi prices are always fair!

the prices are ridicuosly high, especially the food which i may add is really bad and totally not worth it. the place is a dump. go to saddleback lanes. they are so much better.

Comment Date: 1/19/2008 Name: weesnaw.
you guys are stupid. who cares about that stuff? aren't you just here to bowl? the employees aren't gonna bowl with you, so why care about customer service? apparently the food is good, so that's a bonus. plus, they've got a kick butt arcade.

Forest Lanes has come a long way in the past two years since Charlie Kinstler bought and "Keystoned or Del Rio'd" it (he owns those two centers). Here's a portion of what's been done/redone: new restrooms, new synthetic lanes and ball returns, new scoring machines, new overhead monitors, new and relocated front desk, new tables (they recycled their old lanes for the tables!) and chairs, new balls and ball racks, new shoes, new game room, new conference room, new offices, newly repaved parking lot, new snack bar menu, newly remodeled bar, new onlane overhead widescreen TVs, new cosmic bowling and sound system. I'm sure there's more I haven't noted. Currently, they are working on breaking out the bar's wall to make it visible to/from the lanes instead of closed off. They are also replacing the flooring around the snack bar. Rumor has it they will get rid of the old AMF settees and orange flooring in the bowler's area. Although the center isn't quite "there" (final) yet it is getting close and the improvements have made it well worth going there again and the resurgence of open bowling crowds are proving that. They've raised lineage which in turn caused league fees to go up but it I am happy to pay it because I now enjoy going there as opposed to the 5+ years I dreaded it.

My two boys attended a birthday part the other night at Lake Forest Lanes and had a great time. From what I saw, the staff was very helpful and the place looked AMAZING! With the fog machines, black lights, glow in the dark balls, flashing lights, and runway lights on the lanes, it was quite a sight to behold. I do not bowl as of late but have been bowling for over 30 years and have never seen a more interesting and colorful party atmosphere than this one. We will be coming back to bowl as a family on Saturday nights for sure!

All the money they've sunk into the center, but why don't they put some money into the parking lot???? It's HORRIBLE!

DON'T BE FOOLED!!! Yes, Forest lanes "looks" better and is under new ownership. They show you all the bells and whistles. Then, once they have you, the customer service stops. The owner is an unreasonable man interested only in taking your money. Take it from a former league bowler who was offered all kinds of guaranteed money only to find in the "fine print" that there was not much to be had.

Todd Gack rules the lanes at Lake Forest.

Good; ample, building specific (not shared) parking, and pleasant interior atmosphere. Great food and beverage menu. Poor; attention, counter service, lane function. I look forward to the hope that new ownership will take notice of 'World Wide Web' relations and address all the negative mentions regarding their facility.... The pros won't like the damaged ill functionng lanes, and the families won't return to loud obnoxious sexually explicit violent music - really! (personal experience) I liked the idea of genre specific evenings...

As a former employee of the bowling giant that used to opperate Forest Lanes, I can honestly say that being purchased by new owner is the best thing that could have happened to all the great bowlers that have bowled here for years. The place looks so much better than it did 4 years ago. I am happy to see that some of the staff that I worked with is still there but it was the great staff that for 15 years kept the place fun even though the ceiling was leaking and the parking lot looked like the Lunar surface with all the pot holes. Good Luck new owners and hope you have as much fun in that building that I did.

Terrible service. I mean, really terrible. If you have to get change or need something from the front desk, be prepared to wait. That kind of ruined it for me. They don't seem very eager to help the customers. The alley conditions are awful. I ended up with nicks in my balls during our games, the pinsetters on our alley were bad. They dropped all the pins at one point and sometimes it would get stuck or the ball would return. When we tried to get help, once again, we had to wait forever.

I love this bowling alley! I've been bowling for years and I must say the staff here is great! Sooo for the details.. PROS: They have cosmic bowl (similar to rock and bowl) on Fri, Sat, & Sun - prices are very reasonable for this neighborhood. The lanes are okay (nothing spectacular - nothing really wrong with them either) The food is really very good (I had the pizza). It is clean -- looks like they put in new carpeting. The rental balls are in good shape as are the shoes. The bar has a wonderful bartender (Terri -- also the name of one of the front desk clerks who is also quite helpful). They have a good selection of drinks and some nice pool tables. COMPLAINTS: The management is not very flexible about changing the music if you don't care for it... it would be nice if they alternated between different genres to accomodate more folks OR alternatively having certain types of music certain nights would work too -- although I really like the idea of changing every 1/2 hour or so... especially if requests are made! All in all.. great fun!

Yep, it looks as though the changes have started already. I for one am happy about all the new changes.

Finally someone cares about our bowling center. I have been bowling here for many years and I look forward to the positive changes the new ownership is planning for us. Thanks!!
